Thanks for explaining it so simply. I will be able to do everything as I watch the video.
I’m restoring my old bike.
Hey, this video was very helpful to me! Thank you for making it. I want to point out that at 6:29, when you file the cable housing, it's best for the file if you only go in the one direction where the teeth go against the material. The teeth will dull faster if you go both ways.
Been considering that Sunrace derailleur mount. Thanks for the install tutorial!
Great video. Been converting a road bike with a internal hub that crumbled inside to have a deraileur and it wasn't happening, I couldn't attach it, didn't know what was going wrong, and all the other videos I was getting from searches were only detailing how to change deraileurs out, not how to install them, so thanks.
Lol, I have exactly same Acera derailleur I've got cheap, and I was googling how to put it on my BCA 29er bike from Walmart that has the crappiest direct hanger rear derailleur you have pictures. Thank you for your video, helps a lot!
Excelente! Congratulations for this stunning video!
Interesting video. Interesting to see how all the components work together. I may be able to build a bike eventually if I watch enough of your videos.
You can do it!
@@Jamesthebikeguy my Rd is Shimano tz
Is it OK if I just screw/bolt it to the adapter?
thank you for the great video.......I was wondering for a long time where the little nut went to attach the derailure..hanger...it was missing on my bike......you are the only one to demonstrait where the nut fits...........I ve looked at a hundred videos and never seen it explained...........thanks again.....
As someone with a low end walmart bike? This is interesting.
I won't ever have the money for high end biking. Even if I do have that kind of money it's already spoken for so like... the low end facinates me.
greettin from East L.A
thanks for the video you're the man great job ...
Great content dude. I have a fixie id like to install a derailleur on so i dont have to purchase a hybrid bike. Thanks for sharing this vid.
Thanks for the video
Helped a lot
Your very talented with bikes. So neat and tidy. Good job.
You’re*
Awesome, I really want a mountain bike but I only have this old beach cruiser frame, so I’m going to be turning it into a budget mountain bike kinda like a hard tail I guess) until I can save money to buy an actual mountain bike. Thank you!! This video will come in handy ❤
Go for it!
Cool video bud. Well done
Whelp, going off to college soon and can’t bring my mountain bike. I’ll find something reasonable in town with enough gears for me, but if I can’t find anything, glad to know that something like this is possible
Looking forward to converting my single-speed to seven-speed already looking for the components, especially the adapter.
Great video 😊
You dont understand how happy I am rn because of you and I had no clue how to pit the adapter peace on the actual bike and it was so fustrating
Glad I could help.
Thank you so much.👌
Good job
Thanks
Thank you so much !. Just what i was looking for. i have a horizontal dropout. i had an old direct mount shimano 7 speed for my raleigh bought in 04/05. ive no idea what the manufacture date is.i bought a used shimano sora to give my bike some new life today and was lost as to how to fix it to my bike only when i reched home.i was stuck as to to hundreds of different types adapters out there with no idea on which one to buy and most guides were on much more modern bikes
Good luck on your build.
Does this work for most all Shimano rear derailleurs? I purchased a Shimano Altus direct mount (found that out later) that doesn't fit. What's the best way to tell if this adapter will fit the bolt on the rear mech?
Is this applicable on a bmx style frame ? Planning to put a rear derailleur on my wifes mini mtb single speed.
i hereditate this kinda bike and I didnt wtf was this adapter. This extremely helped
Hello, nice video !! Can we have the adapter link please ? Thx
Still no reply, I've always found it insane when a RUclipsr make a whole video about a product and then doesn't offer a link
It's called 5speed gear
Or 5speed gear kit
All the lazy incells asking for the link: 🤡. PUT IN THE WORK AND FIND IT FOR YOURSELF.
wish i could set up a derailleur that fast
I wonder if I could do this to my throne new chrome bike 🚴🏽? Single gear to multi gear
Can you take a quick look at my bike . A 24'' GT Pro Mach One BMX . Is it possible to add any kind of gears setup ?
Perfect vid! I'm looking into converting to rear gears, any recommendation on a upper end derailer?
Sora for road and deore for mtb, i have had these personally and never faced a problem in 6 years, i dont know much about SRAM so i cant tell you but Shimano Sora and Shimano Deore are the best for me, i feel like even the XTR doesn't match up deore
would this be the same for horizontal drop outs on a single speed? Sorry, I guess probably a bit hard to answer unless seeing the rear end drop outs
Yeah
Nice
Thanks
is there a way to do this with a bike that has 127mm o.l.d? i was thinking if i could do it by buying 120mm rear hub and then adding some type of spacers. would that work?
It's there a site I can order this adapter from and what is it actually called. About to do some surgery on my bike
I have a 3 wheel single speed bike and would like to convert it to a 7 speed, how can I do this and can it be done without it costing me alot of money?
Is there a way to switch from single speed to multi-speed quickly and easily like using a flip-flop hub to switch from fixed gear to single speed?
i ordered a shimano derailleur a direct mount one but cam with this adapter can you say how to remove it
Hi dear, I ve the exact same acera configuration ! and... had the same issue when I realised that I missed something to fit in on my ol’ bike, can you please give us the reference of that sunrace adapter ? Regards
what's the exact name of the inside washer? I can't find it in google, I hope you reply. Thanks
Do you have a video to convert a single speed fat tire bike to a 21 speed. Here is a picture of the I'm considering to convert. How difficult and expensive would it was?
Does anyone know where I can find a longer version of this derailleur hanger?
I'm trying to figure out what I gotta do to make this possible with a 1x5 set up for a 20 inch bmx bike, cause that's my dream build. Might have to just end up making a frame to make it happen lol
I have seen bikers do it with a 20 inch rims and odyssey hazard hubs and there a video on u tube of a biker who did it with a Chris king hub on a 26 inch Bmx - but they are only 2 or three speed - still better than one and I am close to doing the same
at 1:39 what were you saying about that style of adapter only taking cheaper derailleurs? I thought most derailleurs had the same type of thread?
Can I use this adapter with sram gx axs derailleur?
Long time since I've done this, and had a wheel issue with my first road bike (long time ago) with the wheel moving to one side under pressure, there is got to be a spacer right to go on the left side to keep the wheel the same distance as the derailleur spacer? Kinda like the screws you used to get in the dropout end. There should be a kit hanger and off side spacer. Anyway nice job just wondering. Fit something like that if you have the wheel going off center under standing climbing pressure. Drew.
What is the name of the derailleur hanger?
It’s a claw hanger
how do i kno if the adapter will fit my bike'
Thank you so much for this video. All local bike shops told me there is no way to get my 80‘s MTB working again. You just proofed them wrong.
Glad I could help!
Great video🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Why? Thank you
@@Jamesthebikeguy i be no idea ab derailliur hanger , i learned from ur video, thats y.thx
Stroke mission.
The reading and writing are in possible. And right right side is weak, walking is slow and my arm is not there Other people are different.
My family is important, My wife and three kids Samantha,Brandt and Eli. I love them dearly. But I need something more... something to benefit World.
So I think this should work... biking three wheels Trike.
5’7” witch side is good for me
Hello! On your bike, there are 2 holes above the rear axle. I also have that, I was wondering what that is for?
One for fenders, one for cargo rack
@@Jamesthebikeguy thanks!
Can I add gears to a bmx bike?
Do you think the added thickness of the aux. derailer hanger might be causing the shifting issues?
I only ask because I am considering useing the same hanger on my wifes bike. Maybe no hanger and a cheap "Claw mount" derailer might work better for her. Don't want her to not like her ride, if you know what I mean.
Looking for honest opinions, and you seem to be knowledgeable. Thanks.
I have a claw right now, but planning on switching to an add-on hanger. I'm also thinking along what you wrote; I'd prefer the add-on align with the frame. Not sure I can find such a thing, but it's my current plan.
UPDATE: the hanger adapter worked just fine to replace the claw.
A little frustrating in that a couple years ago, I had a claw setup break apart. I went to a LBS to get a replacement, and one of the head guys was telling me "it was a shame that I couldn't run a better derailleur as I was limited to using the claw setup".
So either he didn't know any better, or just figured that over time I'd get frustrated with being limited in my selection.
Ultimate point is to go ahead and experiment (but not on your wife's bike).
@@MP-zf7kg I went with the Hanger adapter, too. Been working fine for a year now. Thanks for getting back to me. Have a good one, my friend.
@@ratoneJR final irony: today I looked at the old claw I took off. It's literally a hanger adapter with shimano tourney riveted on. I feel stupid, but then again I'm just now getting a lot more comfortable with bike-rigging.
@@MP-zf7kg The best thing about bicycles is that they are hard to destroy completely. Your tinkering may cause you problems, but you will have trouble destroying the bike. Tinker away and have fun doin' it. 🚲
Nice.. but could do with a little more length in the chain.
does this mean that the wheel will be slightly slanted?
No. This won't effect that
@@Jamesthebikeguy Thankss james
How much would this kind of work cost? Just to have an idea?
Parts are not expensive, but labor could be. Since that varies so much across different regions it would be best for you to call your local bike shop.
Hello James,
Thankyou so much for the info.
Its exactly what I am looking for
I have a question With respect to the dropouts,
One will be shorter than the other as we see because the hanger fits in one of thr dropout,
Is it just that we do a hand adjustment to align the wheel straight when doing the final tightening of the nuts of thr wheel or is it better to have any spacer to get wheel aligned ?
Just to get my doubt cleared as I wouldnt want the wheel to shift if I hit a pothole or a bump.
Please help
Thanks in Advance
No spacer needed to align. Same process if it were a single speed, you find the spot where the wheel is even in the dropout and then tighten up. Once the axle nuts are tight you dont have to worry about it moving or anything.
can u use 8 speed with this adaptor claw?
i mean for example if i have a old road bike.. and it haves 7 speed so i want put 8 speed can i do that with this?
Well you would need all the other parts, but yes
I know I'm 2 years late on this, but one of the bigger issues that I'm seeing with your setup is you were struggling with the derailleur pulling too close forward. The problem is because it's already angled so far forward to begin with if you put the angle backwards like on most mountain bikes or in my experience every mountain bike I've ever seen with gears on them. Then the leg would hang down more during tension and not way so forward preventing you from kicking it or anything with your heel.,.. and probably keeping enough tension on the gears so the chain stays on them.
Been two years. You're probably going to say it runs fine if you even reply., But for those of you who are just now recently seeing this video, what he did seem to be perfectly fine, but where he was struggling at the end to get it worked right. The correct answer is to drop the derailleur back further, not to continue screwing with it until you're just going to accept it. The way you heard him say looks like this is just what we've got.....
Could I switch my dual hub single speed bike to a 9 speed in order to climb hills better?
@@aeestep77biggest problem will be dropout spacing, you'll have to measure what you've got and then find a wheel that has the same width alternatively you can modify the hub with a different axle and spacers. Might have to correct the dishing of the wheel afterwards...
You should also place another on the other side. Mine has an extension too but I get wheel.rubs cause the other side is on place the other is not
In some of those cases you need to redish the wheel. That's the proper solution
@@Jamesthebikeguy What is redish?
Why mines falling

Random bits:
-horizontal dropouts suck. If you're prone to using quick-release wheels, you'll forever have them breaking loose under sudden load....especially unnerving at an intersection
-it would be better if the add-on hanger fits in-line with the frame, I think. It's asking a lot for a derailleur to compensate for that much added thickness.
-I no longer use the biggest ring. Part of that is I don't ride big hills, so I don't need it. The main reason is it is not worth the risk of a minor malfunction destroying a wheel/and/or the derailleur.
QR skewers aren’t made to break open under any circumstances except flipping the lever. Your issue isn’t which dropout style you have, it’s your wheel hub. Dissemble your skewer and give it a nice clean and degrease
i was expecting that James will weigh the adapter. lol
Lol, opportunity missed :-(
Can you give me that adapters buy link flip and amazon
Will this work on a 20 inch BMX Bike ?
Well the hanger would, but it is unlikely you would get the rest of the needed components to work.
@@Jamesthebikeguy Thanks for the reply, Considering the Zizzo Urbano 8 speed bike folding bike.
Haha he answer is yes....I tried it....and it works well...BUT....you can't use the modern cogs that goes as wide as 38 to 51 teeth...if you use the standard 11-28T cogs, 7 or 8 speed, then it works just fine. I suggest using a short cage RD as well...long cages will become a problem...
and I rested on the fact that my dropouts are 120mm :( and any cassette does not fit as it should be 135mm and you can’t bend pipes because they are aluminum
Time to turn my fixie into roadie
YES!

Yay, thanks
Not sure why I’m watching as I don’t have fixed gear. But cool video just in case. Lol.
where'd you get the frame man? isn't it what they call a dutch bike/ lady bike? p.s. or a cruiser bike in the us?
