I'm a bike mechanic with over 25 years experience. Thank you so much for doing this. If I had the opportunity and money, I would do the similar thing to this. Although I would have gone with some older parts like Shimano 600 or maybe a 105 5500 group set with a octalink crankset. Glad to see you using torque wrenches. I've seen too many young people who don't. I've seen people damage parts by over tightening. Looks good. Thank you.
Beautiful! I always like the level of details you go into, the fact that you show your unsuccessful attempts and your reasonning to get the problems solved..
You are like the God of bike repairing...You certainly deserve an Oscar for the highly informative videos you've placed here along the years, allowing us common mortals discover and deal with otherwise insurmountable bike issues. I managed to fix two bikes with your help. Both got stolen, but I'm working on the third now.. Lol
Probably the most interesting video I've seen of yours. You've basically walked me through the next step of my own bike build, and I'm very grateful. Thank you.
RJ you are the best! Thank you for showing us in detail and without taking shortcuts how to get things done. I have a trek 560, 501 chromonoly Reynolds that I've been wanting to update for quite some time, and I think this video just gave me the motivation I needed to start buying the components. Thank you.
You restored this bike to better than its former glory. Love this frame, and this was an A+ professional build job. Interesting and very informative video.
Its not just for austetics. If you want to convert a bike to a travel bike that will fit into under 62 linear inch liggage for airline transport to avoid hefty bike fee charges you MUST have a steel or titanium frame to retrofit S & S Couplers to split the frame in half. RJ built this bike up nicely with modern components. Its expensive but for about $700 he can get #2 couplers brazed on this bike. Would be worth it if you fly quite a bit and want to bring your bike everywhere you go.
I did the 105 5800 and mavic aksiums upgrade on my trek 470 1997 and It is just so cool how these steel frames turnout they ride amazing... good job with the koga cheers mate
Superb job I've never seen converting a bike like this one, Although it takes a lot of tools and work but all are fantastic thing to see. I'm pretty sure the feeling after converting this bike is really fulfilling
Great idea for a video. I have been group riding on my Fixie, and although I'm probably one of the stronger riders, but I get dropped on hills and seriously need to get back in gear.
This guy is the best. Building my first road bike. Would be hell if it was not for these videos. Started before I found these, rip off bike shop charged me $50 to remove the headset and bottom bracket lock ring and adjustable cup. If only
Thanks RJ for specifying the torque. I did not torque the bb enough. It came loose and jammed against the drive side and completely seized the entire crank.
An unusually succinct but well demonstrated, well explained, fun video covering many aspects of bicycle remodel, repair and maintanence. Loved it! Thank you Bike Guy!
Knew I'd be converting a bike, when manufacturers decided senior citizens wanting a comfortable bike unanimously want a ONE speed bike! No words for this insanity. Will be looking for a junked 10 -18 speed bike 24" to convert my 3 speed to. Thanks for showing how to expand the frame, I believe I'll swap out the road tires for mountain bike ones.
Thank you so much for this video, it's exactly the kind of work I wanted to do from an old 80's motobecane bike with a 2012 shimano 105 :), very nice job
Great...nice....thats the same waht i like to do with my old steel bike. Thank you for the insparition. big regards from Germany. I like Yours Videos very well
The bike looks great. Just wanted to say thank you for posting this video and other on your channel. It has shown me enough to make me want to do my own bike maintenance and purchase a starter tool-kit. Also, convinced me that I am capable enough to upgrade the components of my 2002 Fuji, which will be my winter project.
great video, i'm half way through this upgrade now. found a bike for $75 and just finished adding the 10 speed back, been looking for a way to upgrade the bottom bracket and this video helped
Awesome video, RJ. I wish I had this video when I was updating my 1988 Fuji Del Rey. I used 105 parts except for the brakes and shifters. I used Centos Microshift and am very pleased with them - every bit as good as the 105s. People do a double-take when they see me ride my upgraded 80s bike - old and new on one bike. :) The triple butted steel frame is so silky smooth and shifts like a dream with new components. Only my fully carbon Domane is smoother - but only just by a little. Cheers and keep up the outstanding work. I've learned nearly everything about bike mechanics from your channel!
I started this vid while watching a movie. I turned off the movie because the plot of this is so much better. And the editing, lighting and camera work are first rate, so good that I don't ever think..."I wish that was better."
I've been following this on FB. But seeing it in a video like this makes it so much more interesting! Thanks for recording this. It was really fun to watch.
fastfreddy01 pretty cruel the nineties something a turtle light Reynolds to be intense and completely update the crap it will Shimano 105 groupset it's cool bikes
Same here, at first it kind of looked like my Trek 560 series so I started watching, then ended up watching the whole video. I'd love to know how much did it cost to do all this? This is something I've been thinking about doing for quite some time.
Very nice video taught me how to repair and maintain my bike gears and cables. A very informative hands on guide. I think now I am the bike expert. I am now planning to strip my bike of everything and then install it. So that I can be in practice and can go for long touring. Once again Thanks.
Hi RJ I didn't know that poor bike was a fixie when I saw the episode where you were dissolving the frozen stem. But it turned out pretty nice with the modern parts. I would have gone black on the brakes too or everything in silver, but it's ok as it is. When I install new brake cables I don't leave a gap between the pads and the rim. Just push the pads to the rim, pull the cable and tighten the screw. Then squeeze the brake levers really hard a few times. This will help prestretch the cable and fully seat the ferrules. This way you end up with less slack in the cable and more way to go on the barrel adjuster to compensate for pad wear. Cheers
Did you get the frame inserts for the frame? Also you never showed us a test ride! I just rewatched this vid because i like it a lot. Even a follow up of just shifting up and down the gears would be nice :)
To save people from having to find the extremely boring socks for yourselves, they are at 1:48 to 2:10. Personally, I prefer knee-length socks and garter-tabs worn with a good stout pair of veldtschoens.
i found your video very informative. can you make a video on converting a bike which is not really intended to add gears? like no derailer mounting brackets no gear cable holders.
RJ The Bike Guy yes, but the bike I'm using has a lot of memories and i don't really want to replace it. i recently moved to a mountain area that's why I'm thinking of adding gears. and I'm sure there will be lot of people like me who don't want to replace their trusty old bike.
I just ordered a single speed fat bike along with it's respective 8-speed geared conversion kit. While your project is a little different than mine, this was still a HUGE help for me. Thanks!
Don't be shallow. Riding fixed gear is challenge, if you ever try and actually learn to ride one, you will come back and delete your comment. I also hate attention whores that ride a fixed gear around the block, going slower than my grandma, but undertaking a 100km ride through hills and towns is completely another thing. A track cyclist can easily ride a geared freewheel, but road cyclist will need at least a few weeks to ride a track bike ;) Take care.
The finished bike is very cool, worth to save, upgrade it, these old steel frames are very comfy, however i'd rather put a flared gravel bar on it. I have also a Koga miyata, with flatbar as a daily driver-commuter, and love it.
That’s the beauty of vintage bikes, though. You can convert them anyway you like, and as long as you don’t modify the frame, you can always change them back.
RJ doesn't have this issue, but I ALWAYS do: the rear wheel pulls out of the dropouts on those forward-facing styles, especially if you're trying to use quick-release hubs. I've two of that style bike, and finally ended up modifying them both to where they'll function with QR hubs and not pull forward.
Let me guess, you fell down the first time you tried? If you haven't tried one yet, you'll enjoy the challenge. Believe me! ;) PS: I know you want to believe :P
eh R .J Nice to see that there are old mechall still around,,, in my day i was tge one all the kids came to weld fix repair flat s ]al lno cost may learn somthing on the way times have changed glad to see people like you still around
Nice job RJ. On my bikes I prefer to pull the cables all the way into the brifters, then I pass them through the ferrules, and then through the housing. Then I push the housing into ferrules, and then I secure everything on the handlebars, through cable stops and derailleur barrel adjuster. I find it easier and I avoid damaging the cables. Also I use nose ferrules and cable liners between cable stops.
Really enjoyed the video, I'm doing the same thing to a Holdsworth Professional with a 105 5700 groupset I picked up used. Also, glad to see one less fixie conversion on the road
I really enjoyed the video. Even though I don't have the space, gear and knowledge to tinker with bikes, I like watching others build and deconstruct things.
Give back his soul to a poor vintage road bike that been disrespect by his owner. Thank you for that. I just find the stem way too high but the result is fire.
Thank you RJ. I had never even seen an adjustment screw in the back drop out slots. I'll be trying to learn more about that pretty soon. Good stuff. Very good stuff!
That is a fantastic video! You showed/tought me most of what I know about fixing and modifying bikes. I have rebuilt/fixed/adjusted many bikes using knowledge you shared freely. I am about to build a similar bike to the one you just showed. I now also build wheels. I am very grateful to have come across your videos. Thank you sir!

Great build again, the only thing that´s disturbing me is the massive black crank on that light frame.
what stem is this? dimesnions? where did u get it from? i got an extremely ugly stem on my vintage bike that extrmely destroys the aesthetics of it.
