  • John Frusciante has been having some issues with his pedalboard during the Unlimited Love Tour. A guitarists worst nightmare is your whole pedalboard doing down in the middle of a show and clearly his board has some reliability issues!

What you said around the 4 min mark is exactly what my first thought was. I get running things in series because it's easier to move things around and swap things out, but a switching loop system is much more dependable for if something goes down. Also, I love vintage gear, but save it for the studio. I really good clone is much more dependable for touring, and usually a much smaller footprint on the board or in the rack.

This x100. All of it. Big fan of loopers and adding an extra major pedal (distortion, delay, phaser) on random loops in case something goes down.
My thought when I saw the video of the rig going down was "why isn't the pedal board he used on the media tour in March on Stern/Kimmel/Fallon connected to a DI or separate amp with a switch over for if this happens?" For the size of the crowds and amount of money they are making there need to be immediate built in redundancies.

@@dls31070 there are a lot of red flags in your comment, the first being your use of the term roadie. It’s not 1974. You’d be hard pressed to find a video technician who calls themself a roadie in 2022. I suspect what you mean to say is you either worked for a company that provided video services to a local venue, or you were part of an in-house video crew, probably at an amphitheater. Second, a touring person would know that rigging typically dumps between 7 and 9am, but backline doesn’t have access to the gear until 10-11ish (typically). You also seem to be unaware that a guitar tech doesn’t patch microphones, tech in-ear rigs, or have anything to do with vocal feeds to FOH. I worked as part of the video crew for a band that toured the US in 2002. I did not work for a local amphitheater or venue. And yes we called ourselves roadies to those outside the industry because it is a shorthand that everyone understands. I was a video technician who filmed the show every night in 35 cities in the US. Happy to provide my tour schedule. It wasn’t 1974 but it was a long time ago. And we did load in at 7 am, all of us. Yes it does take hours to load in but as I said you still have all day to set up. I also specifically said I was not a guitar tech or audio tech. But I am well aware that a guitar tech does not handle monitors or microphones. You are conflating two of my posts. So! Guys! I went and saw the show in Detroit MI last night and of course, like most shows of this tour, John was having some pedalboard issues… could’ve been a lot worse however, John and Henry Trejo (John’s current tech) very very quickly decided on skipping over the wireless units, they pulled out the exact promo board that Justin mentions in this video! AND they went down to only using the silver Jubilee! Thankfully it was towards the very end of the show, from what I can remember it was at the very beginning of Californication. Fruscanti must have one of the most complicated in-series rigs out there. All I know is,...Fruscanti needs to have his guitar / pedal tech talk with Trey Anastasio's guitar / pedal tech ASAP! Trey has a very complicated rig set up and it incorporates digital elements and custom switches / loopers / patches / boxes to control everything on Trey's set up.

Of course, it could be set up with amp emulation turned off since it would be running straight to his amp. I know that he probably varies the effects he uses for each song; but they could even simplify things and have him preselect the effects he would most likely want access to, and the unit could be programmed (and have the name displayed) for each song. Units from Line 6, Fractal, and Neural all sound fantastic.

Nothing like taking you out of your game. That must not be a great feeling for any of them up there.
I had an issue at the end on one gig, volume drop intermittently. We squeeked out way through the last song or two.
When I got home, I was thinking that it was one of the solderless cables, but it turned out to just be the connection between the actually jack and the socket of one pedal.
Must've been some oxidization as the patch cables were all good, and they sound cut in when I giggled that one cable.
We did play a bunch of outdoor gigs that year, maybe it was condensation along the way, who knows. Deoxit/contact cleaner is your friend.

this is why I always believe that less is more. yes i would love to have a 20+ pedal board with super fancy stuff on it but at the end of the day all i REALLY need on a board is some type of cheap one knob booster (LPB-1 by EHX just to dirty up my clean sound a lil and as a always on pedal) and some type of distortion (i really like the DigiTech HotHead Distortion or the Boss DS-1)

    • @jillesguzman3333

You're right about the less is more approach. However: John doesn't even use fancy pedals. It's the meat and potatoes of Boss, MXR, Digitech and EHX. I think he's just using too many. A line of 15+ pedals in front of the amp is quite a lot.

He likes the tone of running all his pedals in order. A loop switcher can change your tone, for better or worse. What is amazing to me is how old the cabling and how disorganized his board looks. His board looks like he put it together in his back yard before his gig for 50 people at some smoke filled shit bar. Dude is playing guitar for the red hot chili pepppers. He needs to get his pedalboard upgraded. This is not rocket science. Stop being a cheap ass. Overhaul the board with quality components. Have a b rig that can get you through. Seriously, looks like he bought a bunch of everyday shit from guitar center. Dude needs to reach out to a professional.

    • @sethlover6498

@Luca Scaccini oh yeah? no way!! holy cow... thanks for the looper education!! its called impedance... loopers can have an impact on that just like running pedals in order outside of a looper. Impedance can have an impact on his tone. He likes what he is hearing. Keep it that way, clean up the board. Now go away looper educator.

In a recent "That Pedal Show" Q&A Dan (GigRig) mentioned that John *IS* using a switcher underneath his board - a GigRig quarter master - in case any of pedal failure(s). That's why he's able to bypass them and get back to a clean-tone (or however he has the amps set). What he's been experiencing must be more complicated of a problem that just needing a switcher

Well, he has like 150 pedals in front of him... Even though I understand him, he likes the old school pedals and analog equipment just like me, but I would seriously consider Kemper or whatever people use nowadays if I found myself in this scenario.
I just don't find many uses for 100 different patches and pedal combinations. I prefer having one big wall of tone, and another flavor/layer of tone to mess around. So I got down to this: 1 OD+preamp, WAH, 1 chorus and 1 delay/reverb unit, 1 compressor for cleans and a small tuna. Once I get a better guitar with better dynamics and volume pot, I'll even consider removing the compression or replacing it with an EQ pedal. and just roll the guitar volume back for cleans.
    Keep it sweet and simple.

Johns insistence on running the board in series with no switcher is really silly to me. It seems like every player doing gigs as big as rhcp is using a Bradshaw rig or an rjm, where the pedals live in a rack. Very tech friendly, reliable. I don’t see why John finds it appropriate to use 20+ pedals, many of them over 20 years old, in series, the same way an amateur would throw a board together for a bar gig while he’s playing football stadiums. I’d be disappointed as a concertgoer.

I can't understand why a guitarist wouldn't want a true bypass system anyway, just for the sake of their tone not being drained by pedals connected in series.
