Perfect explanation on how to make a pattern for leggings that will fit ME!! Thank you for breaking it down and making it easy to understand and follow along.
what if you sewed only the outside of the waistband to the leggings and then turned the raw edge of the inside under and top stitched it over the seam, wouldn't that make a nicer flatter and more professiional seam, or you could even flat-fell it, or is there any reason why you SHOULDN'T DO THAT. Also I'm a little confused about the changes you make to the pattern that we drafted from the other video. Don't you already have the leggings assembled at this point or should you make those changes to the pattern BEFORE YOU CUT IT OUT. (That makes sense to me, since now the legging part WON'T go all the way to your natural waist. Good thing I read the whole recipe before cooking anything! I am anxiously awaiting your answer. I have my legging pattern all drawn with a full waist as per the other video. I will cut it down as per this video BEFORE cutting it out if that's what you mean, because I can't afford to waste fabric. I want to do the tapered waistband with the elastic. I think I have enough for leggings for me AND two small grandchildren if I'm careful. And finally do you finish the ankles by just turning it under and blindstitching it? That would be my inclination. Other than that pequeña duda your videos are excellent.
Yes you make all pattern changes before cutting your fabric. I also STRONGLY SUGGEST using a cheaper stretch fabric to test your pattern and fit BEFORE cutting out the good fabric.
@@Mellysews Thanks. I'm there! It would be good if you linked these videos in their descriptions. This fabric is not ideal yoga pants fabric, it was $3 at the thrift, and I am pretty experienced, so I'll chance it. I don't need them perfectly tight either. I love how you drafted the pattern!
The organization is better on my website and all the tutorials are cross linked there mellysews.com/how-to-sew-leggings-make-your-own-leggings-pattern/
On version 2, what if you left out the elastic? It looks like it’s pulling in even on you, and with my mommy tummy, I’m afraid it’s going to muffin top me. I like the one less side seam and the curve, but can this be done higher like version one and a bit smaller so it stays up without elastic?
If you leave the elastic out of version 2, the waistband will roll down whenever you move. The truth about mommy tummies (and I have one too) is that because there is a layer of squish on top you either have a slight muffin top with elastic to hold up the waist or you get your waistband rolling down. That's why the yoga waist works - rolling down is expected and part of the style.
I don't have specific brand recommendations currently, but I do recommend a machine that can do a zig-zag stitch and a one step buttonhole if you plan to do garment sewing.
So for the second method , if my natural waist is 27 and I reduce the waist band measurement to 20 should I measure the entire length of the waist band as 20 ? I’m a bit confused 😅 or should I take the measurement as 27 itself ?
When garments ride up it's because there's too much width somewhere that doesn't need it (perhaps lower leg) and not enough width somewhere that does need it.
My waist is 44” and so on my pattern it is 22” and 80% of 22 is 18. I dropped down 1” from natural waist on leggings. I want to make waist band version #2. I made my pattern 4” by 11” to be cut on the fold and slit in 3 places and reduced top waist down to 9”. Does that sound right? Cut 4 of them?
Melly Sews 44x80%=35.2/2=17.5 On fold, top waist should be about 17.5 and bottom waist line would be 22” on the paper pattern. The pattern has a curve to it now
Very clear, nice and simple; just what I needed. I know it's a bit of work to make these videos - Thanks so much!
Glad it's helpful, thanks for watching!
Thanks, Melly! Your tutorials are always so clear and the editing is fantastic. Thank you so much! I've been learning a lot from your videos.
I'm glad you enjoy them!

wow, exactly what i needed to learn, i messed up my kids pants, i wished i had seen this yesterday :-(
Both are great options, prefer the first method for myself, keep it high, roll down right where I want it, thanks.
Sewing is great because you can make things exactly the way you want them!
Thank you Melly for the clear instruction, I just finish my waist band perfectly,
Glad to help!
Both of these techniques are different from anything I’ve done on tights. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Your tutorials are so motivating! I cant wait to pick up fabric and try this tomorrow!
Have fun!
Love your clear and detailed instructions..hope to learn and make a project from one od your videos..☺

Hi Melly! Any tips for sewing the waistband to the leggings since it is slightly smaller? Thank you!
You stretch it just enough to match the leggings.
Love your work thanks oh yeah what is the sewing machine that you use love how it works

just finished mine, oh god how comfy are these? never taking them off :p

Love your videos! I’m going to try to make my own leggings and am new to sewing, what sewing machine(s) would you recommend?

Hey, im making leggings with attached skirt, can i stitch the skirt to the waitband?
yes
@@Mellysews thanks! But what stitch did you use for the leggings? I've never made leggings before and dont want the thread to show..

Should I take it as 27 ? Or half of 27?
I really don't understand what you're asking.
Where did you buy your ruler?

Melly could you explain why leggings ride up on your legs? I have this problem every time i wear them.
When garments ride up it's because there's too much width somewhere that doesn't need it (perhaps lower leg) and not enough width somewhere that does need it.

No. Do 80% of 44 and then divide that by 2 and cut 1 on the fold. Waistband 2 only has one seam, at center back.
Melly Sews 44x80%=35.2/2=17.5
On fold, top waist should be about 17.5 and bottom waist line would be 22” on the paper pattern. The pattern has a curve to it now
how do we get the pattern
You draft it ruclips.net/video/GkuTfkO7Qmc/видео.html
yea but how do you sew the waistband so its not closed? how do you keep it open?
I don't understand what you mean
@@Mellysews like how do you keep the top of the pants open
@@vee7463 again, I don't understand what you mean by open. The pants in the video aren't sewn shut.
@@Mellysews how do you keep them from sewing shut, like how do you get a sewing machine to not sew all the way through
@@vee7463 again, the ones shown in the video are not sewn shut. I showed on video exactly how I sewed around the waist.
