    Unfortunately application fees are very real. I got kicked out on my 18th birthday. I had $2600 saved trying to prepare for what I knew was going to happen. I only made $17k a year, and I kept applying to places while living in my car. I ended spending $450 on application fees before I eventually got accepted, but I was now $200 short on bills because of the money I had to waste on application fees. The new landlord was fortunately understanding and waved $200 on my first months rent. But man, I feel like a decent portion of these rental companies income is just people feeding them application fees.

    I recently encountered a rental scam. There is a vacant house the scammer will send the “agent” to and show you around. The price seems great and the house looks great. Then the agent (actual scammer) will tell you the owner of the house is out of town, sick, or any excuse to tell you they can’t meet up or speak over the phone. They can text though. Then they will ask you to wire the deposit to them. You lose your money, you never get keys. You can’t prove anything because you don’t have a rental contract yet.

    What really pisses me off is that there is virtually no effective recourse most of the time. These scammers are often overseas like I suspect this guy of being and being international there is pretty much no way a average joe will have the resources to get enough evidence to get any sort of higher authority involved thus these crimes go largely unpunished. The next worst thing are the so called "scam hunters" that pretend to disrupt these scammers and their groups with kids party tricks as that again doesn't solve the core problem of failing to remove these scammers but they get massive support otherwise.

    • @wuddup321
      @wuddup321 4 месяца назад +8

      Scambaiter RUclipsrs usually can't do anything effective to the scammer, but they do a good job of informing people about scams so less people fall victim. And usually in an entertaining way. It's fun seeing the scammers get messed with.

    • @purplecat4977
      @purplecat4977 4 месяца назад +5

      The main thing the scambaiters do is make entertaining content that people can be induced to watch that lays out exactly how these scams play out, how terrible these people are, and how people fall for them. I know people who've shown elderly relatives these videos. The really good ones really shine a light on how cruel the scammers can be to their elderly victims (and how manipulative they can be) for this reason.

    • @DeagleGamesTV
      @DeagleGamesTV 4 месяца назад +1

      As others have pointed out scam hunters actually combat the problem in a few different ways, through awareness to potential victims with entertaining attention grabbing videos, through disrupting the scammers operations and wasting their time impacting their bottom dollar, and in the cases of some of the more dedicated like jim brown and kitboga actually gathering enough evidence to get local authority's involved and bank accounts frozen. TLDR they are doing much more than you or I.

      A few years back I filed a patent, the patent office, this law firm I sold the patent to, they all wanted stuff faxed. First, I tried installing efax on Ubuntu and hooking up the USB cable to the cell phone. This actually worked in the past, the chips would do like 14.4 dialup and fax, it's showed up as a fax modem that efax fully supported. But I had an early 4G phone by then and fax support had been removed. I faxed some stuff from the grocery store but it was like $1 a page.
      So I signed up for some online fax thing for like $5 a month since I was definitely going to be faxing more than 5 pages, plus then I had a number if they wanted to fax me anything back.
      I kept getting invoices for past due bills! I actually contacted them to let them know the fax number was reassigned, and these bills were effectively not going anywhere. No dice, the system just kept sending them. I didn't really give a care, the service included like 1000 pages a month or something so having these invoices use like 5 or 10 pages was not a big deal. They just showed up on the web site so it's not like they were wasting paper like a real fax would have.

      I've had the same email for a long time and it has been sold many times over by now for sure, but also it and some passwords have been in data breaches before. So it's very likely than any email account of any significant age is easily found out by these scammers

    So many companies use Zelle now it's starting to get difficult to tell what is a scam or not. Travelers Insurance uses it because some how they loose every check in the mail. Had to use it on the rental application fee to pay the property management company not to mention the landlord each month. Why on earth in 2024 there is zero fees to use Zelle but a wire transfer can cost $15 or more!?

    This reminds of the time i worked as tech support at cnx att. I remember an indian man pretending to be a girl named Marjorie so that he can claim that girl's insurance. Whats funny is he doubled down as a woman despite his voice is clearly that of a mans. When we called the real Marjorie she was genuinely shocked to know that a man was impersonating her. Scammers these days are wild

    Application Fees are 100% real, that's just their wording for the cost to do a background check typically. But also...it's so they can sip every cent from you.

    So I recently moved after being in the same house for 20 years. I found much more scam ads in local social media listings than I did legitimate ones. I was lucky that the people clearly weren't from around here and I have lived here my whole life and it is a very small town so I was able to spot many right off the bat because they would use random pics from what I guess were old actual listing. The pics from what was supposed to be the outside of the house didn't match the pics that were supposed to be inside or the address listed was not where the house from the outside pics was located. Some were pics or addresses of houses that I knew who the actual owner was. They all wanted you to send an "application fee" from $35 to $50 per person on the lease and you had to cash app it prior to being allowed to seeing the place and a couple even wanted the 1st and last months rent thru cash app and they would leave the key under the mat. So many DO fall for these so thank you for this video

    Also don't open files sent to you in email or text messages. They usually contain viruses or other malware. They just tried to send me a pdf with the text "order sent reciept enclosed".
    No company or anything. Just a random number it came from.

    Was a landlord and got accused of scamming for background check fees often. I am sure this guy is a scam artist.. It just sucks that its become such a thing that landlords and tenants are now so cautious about it. Every time I rejected an applicant I had 50% chance of being called a scammer lol

    I'm dealing with email bombarding right now. They take your email and sign it up for thousands of accounts so you get hit with a ton of emails in a short about of time in order to hide confirmation emails. They used someone's stolen credit card to buy an iphone using your email then they cancel the order a few days later for a refund and get it on giftcards or something like that to cover their tracks. Amazon & apple are usually the two they use for that.

    If it makes people feel better, someone in Nigeria will eat for a month (?) I often get mails registering accounts like that as well and I do exactly that, I go to the site without using any referral link, I log in even using the lost password option and then randomize the password, change the security questions and everything that can be used to restore it. Deleting the account sometimes doesn't work because they can recreate it. But note that sometimes sites just send you the confirmation email without anyone registering your account, those sites actually create the accounts with data harvested from mailing lists, databases, etc, and then send the mails so that you click on the confirmation and they proceed to create it so you need to be aware whether the site is known for using those tactics or not. Talking as a software developer with over 20 years behind I kind of know when it's a human trying to scam (or maybe not even scam, just creating a new account in Valve or Crunchyroll or somewhere to enjoy 30-day free benefits or evade a ban) or when they are just filling their user list.
