Self-filmed by Sheree Blackley in Australia. Sheree is speaking Kalkutungu, also commonly spelled Kalkatungu, which is a language of the Aboriginal Kalkadoon people of the Mount Isa area in Queensland. The Kalkadoon people had a complex trading system with other Indigenous people in Australia previous to European colonization of Australia, and Kalkatungu was often used as a trade language prior to first contact in 1861. Kalkutungu was largely lost following a 6-year conflict fought between the European settlers and police and the Aboriginal tribe. This conflict culminated in a massacre where many Kalkadoon people were killed by musket fire in 1884; this event was enough to devastate the tribe and its linguistic culture. There were not many survivors who still lived in the tribal lands, so the linguistic group was dispersed and English often replaced the Kalkatungu as the primary language for commerce and communication.
The grammar and spoken variety of this language was not written, so it is being reconstructed through collection of as many linguistic samples as possible from the area and comparison with similar areal languages. Barry Blake, an Australian linguist at La Trobe University Melbourne, is known for collecting data from the last living native speakers to determine what language family Kalkutungu belonged to, whether or not there is some single proto-language ancestor for Aboriginal languages in Queensland, and how lost languages could be accurately reconstructed with limited data; this is an ongoing process.

👋🏿I've been saying the same thing about language being a birth right. 💪🏿And we need policies in place to help people become fluent in their Parents language. My first language learned is English and I'm learning Haitian Creole. 🇭🇹

We agree - everyone should be able to have access to their heritage language(s)! While you're beginning your journey with Kreyòl, you might enjoy following @MichelDeGraff on Twitter and reading some of his works. He is a linguist from Haiti, often writes posts in Kreyòl on social media, and is a strong advocate for mother tongue education. Jwi!

Please add Kalkutungu as subtitles. Since Kalkutungu is not available as a language option, a Wikitongues representative has to pick an existing language and rename it to Kalkutungu (where it will say for example "English (Kalkutungu)"). It isn't the best option, but an option. - If you speak or can transcribe Kalkutungu, please do write a reply.

it's very important for people to be familiar with their native language, it's the centre of one's culture. Hopefully we see all Australian native languages revived

Here in Russia unfortunately, many ethnic minorities forget their languages, and government policies of defunding education, including in local languages, don't help 😢😢😢
You are doing a good job preserving your heritage there in Australia

I had an Uber passenger that I was taking to LAX airport after a holiday.. he complimented me and mentioned “not seeing many beautiful black women in Australia.. just Aborigian” (I couldn’t help but think.. what’s his definition of black?? He said it as though they were aliens.. this woman could be my cousin.. and I know Australia is full of women who look like her) 🤷🏽‍♀️🤔

People are gross. There's so much racism against Indigenous people. My wife is white indigenous and the things people say to her face make me furious, they treat her as though she's not 'like them' because she's got white ancestry as well as black ancestry.
