Hi i recently bought this machine. I am having a hard time finding the needles. Can you tell me the size or any recommendations of needles I can buy for the Bernina 830
My grandma used to own the same model of sewing machine (which is now mine) and she'd use it all the time. I wanted to get into sewing but have been hesitant on using it as it is so old. I've found your videos gold for just getting a better understanding on the machine. So thankyou!
This is a great machine. Have had mine since 1972. I have 2 newer fancy ones but they are not the work horse the 830 is! Take to Bernina dealer and have it tuned and oiled. Could be about $100 but if you want a great running machine that is what u should do.
I bought my Bernina 830 in 1982 and it was a total workhorse. Although it’s been replaced by electronic machines and deeper throated quilting machines, none of them are loved as much as the 830. It’s a jewel that still hums along without complaint when needed.
I have this exact machine and I am trying to service it myself. I am THRILLED with the quality of your videos! I need the closeups, and the excellent explanations. Right now though, I need Part 2, where you put everything back together (especially the cam underneath the handwheel that connects with the motor belt. There is a spring in there somewhere that inexplicably popped out on me, and I can't figure out how to put it back together... Is there a Part 2? I couldn't find it.
My mother-in-law’s, who was Swiss bought a Bernina 830 in 1974 which I now have. I was really nervous of using it initially but it’s been a fantastic machine but the plastic casing is now quite brittle in places. Last week when I had just started sewing the needle suddenly sped off & would only stop when we took the plug out of the wall. It has now been fixed & usable again. However, this week I am going to look at buying a new one, although it will be a big change going from mechanical to a computerised machine & so many choices - considering 435, 480 or 540 or a cousin in Switzerland has just bought an Elna 680+ difficult to choose.
Just one thing to consider… Todays machines are made in China with a "Known name" stamped on them ( Pfaff, Singer, Viking ). Bernina is made in Thailand, and expensive.. Janome is probably the best, they make Elna and the Burnette machines. Janome is made in Taiwan, but the quality is good and "does not pretend to be something it is not"..
Have an 830 record (1975). Is there a fix for the electrical connection at the motor. We have to put pressure on the connection to power the unit. Also where can you get parts for them in Canada?
I’ve recently got one of these machines as a gift, I’m very excited to use it! I’m having a problem where the needle is off centred and hitting the back of the plate before going into the bobbin hole, any tips on trouble shooting?
common problem with these is the pedal gets really hot. also the pedal can eventually start the motor running by itself if left plugged in and unattended. then the motor will usually run itself until it melts down, possibly catching fire, but definitely melting itself down and hopefully throwing the mains electrical breaker before resulting in a house fire. the motors and the pedal absolutely need to be updated. this happened to one of my 830's. not the house fire part thankfully. so i wired on a switch to the power cable of my other one, so i am sure to turn the switch off as soon as i'm done, as long as it's plugged in. the other thing that breaks is the nylon gear around the middle of the upper part of the machine. they split probably from age, but also if someone who doesn't know what they are doing oils it. never put oil on plastic gears! if you want to have your bernina 830 record for 50 more years, invest in a motor upgrade from a qualified service technician, and buy an extra nylon gear while they're still being made and sold. i got one on ebay i think.
I just checked the vertical cam on my machine and it has a cracked plastic 😢. Is there any way to replace the gear with a metal one? Any instructions or help is highly appreciated.
@@InStitches exactly, it is working and even not that noisy. However, i am now a bit concerned if it lasts in this situation. Mine is from 1972, and it seems they replaced it with metal one for later models.
hi...just wondering what would cause the shaft to stop turning...I took of hand wheel and I got the shaft to turn at first and now it will not turn at all...I have oiled it everywhere I can.
Very interesting. Had mine for 45 years and still working well but sometimes stitch length isnt working. May be problem with the bobbin being too tight or cheap thread?
Hello I have a Bernina 830 and it seems to run about a 1/2 to 3/4 of a revolution cycle and then the machine binds stopping the motor. With some effort I can manual turn the machine until it gets past the point of binding then it will run fine until it cycles back to the part of the revolution that it binds. If i disengage the clutch as if to wind a bobbin the motor runs smooth and consistent. I followed the owners manual's instruction for lubrication maintenance but that did not help the problem. Is this a known issue with Bernina 830 that I can research troubleshooting or is this out of the ordinary and needs a mechanic's assessment?
I agree re cam crack. I’ve asked him to give us a tutorial as engineers tend to right off the machine. The cams are cheap but the labour to sort is not.
Do you fix Bernina foot controller acceleration problems type213 Bernina record? I need to find someone that repairs foot controllers. Thank you Your videos are great, thank you I didn't know what the problem could be until I saw your videos
I’ve been trying to not buy this for weeks. Due to nylon cam cracking. I hear it’s 50% of the old ones. Particularly sold on eBay. Cams can be replaced but the engineer told means they’re normally written off. Can you show us a cam replacement video please? It would help the life of this beautiful machine. 50% of them currently not in useable state !
I recently acquired a 830. It runs but all the embroidery disks that sit by the can gear have been removed for the different stitches. Have you experienced this on any 830?
I have same machine. It has been a work horse for me since 1982. Recently having an issue. When pushing on foot pedal, machine doesn’t take off. I turn handwheel toward me to help. It will finally take off sewing. Any ideas of problem? Also, my decorative stitch es not working, but this has been a problem for awhile. After last serviced, they worked for short while. I have always taken good care of my Bernie. The Bernina technician always loved when I brought her in for a tune up. But he has passed away now. Thanks for any help.
My 830 is running well after oiling but I am wondering what to do with the plastic (nylon?) gears. Is it oil, grease or just leave them? If they need grease, what grease should be used? Thank you.
I bought this machine new in 1976..it has been a wonderful tool for me. Good to see that as long as I don't drop it, it is good to go!
I had mine new in 1976 too. Still using it.
Mine was 72 and still a work horse!

Schmetz is what I use, remember flat to the back.

Good video. I appreciate the analysis of where the problems could be. You do a very good job of teaching. Thanks!
Thanks.
U are so lucky to have tried almost all vintage machine

Agreed.
Have you done part 2? I can't find it and I would love to watch it!

that's a fault with the pedal. they burn out and create a short circuit where the motor runs by itself. quite dangerous.

I just inherited one of these! It was beautifully kept up. It was serviced a year ago not used since. Any advice on using this wonderful machine?

Sunday October 22. 2023 . I have an Artista 730 that the touch screen has quit. Is it possible to get another one so my repair person can replace it?
Thank you for this video. I have an 830 that won’t sew the additional stitches. Can you help with this problem?
So helpful thank you!

You may find the machine will still work with the crack, albeit a little noisy. Thanks.

@@golsaber From what I understand, it should last a fair while.
I cannot turn the clutch (small wheel) it’s completely stuck. Any ideas how to fix?
Try holding the needle bar to stop the machine from turning while you undo the clutch wheel. Thanks.
Bernina 830 or a Husqvarna cl 21a?
Thank you for your tutorials. Very helpful. I have Bernina 830 Record vintage. The left-centre-right knob not working. Can I replace it? :)
I'm in Australia

That sounds like the cam stack gear is broken. It's a common fault but you may need a mechanic to check it for you. Thanks.

The nylon gear on the cam stack broke, so they just removed it. Replacements are impossible to find unless you find a "parts machine"..
Is the Cam stack available for 830 record. The machine I acquired will only straight stitch
