I just wish one could have had this recording to play to Rubinstein himself as I believe he would have been thrilled! He didn’t like his commercial recordings of this piece and wonderful as they were, they didn’t come near the live performances I heard. Thank you for this gem!
I could not believe my eyes when I saw this. I have waited all my life for a live recording of Rubinstein playing this Sonata. Thank you so much for posting this. I was lucky enough to see him playing it that same year and can still remember the thrill of it 48 years later. Do you have the rest of the recital?
I am sure this would have been the best of the recital as a live recording of Rubinstein playing this piece has always been my Holy Grail. However, it would be nice to have the whole all Chopin recital or at least the 4th Ballade the two Scherzi and the other two encores.
I listened to this last night as the culmination of a record recital I put on to mark 40 years since the Maestro left the world stage. I was privileged and lucky enough to hear Rubinstein perform this Sonata at the Royal Festival Hall in London in May of the same year, 1974. It has remained my greatest ever musical experience and all my life a recording of Rubinstein playing this Sonata live has been the Holy Grail of recordings to be found and obtained. Listening to this performance last night from three months earlier completely lived up to that memory from 48 years ago. There are no words for how wonderful it is to be able to hear this live performance after all these years and to have it to listen to again. Grazie mille mille! PS: goodmanmusica below comments "in Sì dieses minore" indicating that he thinks this recording plays half a step sharp, so that the Sonata is effectively playing back in C minor. It is also too fast. Others have said the same elsewhere. The most likely scenario is that it was recorded on a hand held cassette or tape recorder which was running slow, probably due to low batteries (as the Sonata came at the end of the first half of the recital) and that, when it was played back for digital transfer, it was played at normal speed, making it effectively run fast. I have been kindly advised of a very straightforward fix to this: transposeDOTvideo which provides an add on to download. My kind advisor says: "It allows you to alter the pitch and timing of ANY RUclips video, together or independently. Takes under 10 seconds to install and the interface is highly intuitive. I was able to do both corrections instantly." For my ear, playing the recording a half step/semitone down and at 94% speed sounds the most natural. The download can only adjust streaming video.
