I ran this 3 time for three different groups! One with veterans, one with beginners and a mixed group. ALL THREE urged Matreous out of the mansion with them before he could get anything in .... rather logical as a reaction! Here is how I fixed it: he didn't have the Imp statue. Told the party to explore in exchange for him helping the town (because he needs a day or two for preparations anyways). He will reopen the portal every hour and have the players roll a perception check when they come back from the arboretum or the librairy to see if the can notice an invisible creature walking in the diraction of the gate followed by a scream.
Makes it easy to skim through and make sure you have your stuff straight. Thanks man. Also good tie in for 4.

This explanation is amazing. Thank you very much. My current group doesn't use maps, but I really want to use them for when I run sessions. When using maps like this do you cover the areas that they haven't explored yet with paper or something and just reveal as they proceed? Or just cover important sections? Or not cover at all?
I like your work, been watching your videos since RotFM. I rushed through this chapter the day after purchasing the book. Mistakes were made on my part, but salvageable, hope video for chapter 2 comes out before my next game, : )

Ran this with a group of fairly experienced players, but they rolled random characters. the only thing that a certain was the characters races : ALL KOBOLDS... hilarious!
If you can say, which artist did you use on Fiverr? I was going to redo some maps myself but creating maps is the least favorite part the hobby for me..
Just wondering how you got your party to ignore helping the cursed town for 2 more sessions? I’m worried if I take this route they will want to go there right after chapter 1.
I had the NPC that recruited the party tell them "Well there goes my only lead, I'm going to do some digging and see if I can gather more info. I'll write you when I come up with something" at the start of chapter 4 that NPC sends them a letter with the creeping darkness book and says I've got a new lead meet me in Maerin
I've been contemplating having the Avowed suggest Mazfroth's Mighty Digressions might contain what they need to find out about the curse, and possibly find a way to connect the were-ravens also (still working on that) since there's the fey connection running through them.
