A DVD set of FMQ on a sit down machine would be GOLDEN! I always think I can do it all when I see your videos. Then I throw up when I try it on my projects. Then I cuss about you making it look so easy. So a DVD set would be so awesome! I would buy it. NOW!
Welcome to Canada. Next time you are here come visit. I live about 20 minutes from Algonac and Walpole Island. A little town called Wallaceburg Ontario
Angela, tks for posting this. Have tried many of ur "swirly" designs but have yet to try anything with a ruler - maybe my next quilt - a geometric - large sqs - may be the 1. U make it all look so easy, love watching u....clever girl that u r......
Can you post more of these type of videos on longarm quilting? I enjoy them. I am a beginner at quilting and aspire to be a l9ng arm quilter. Thank you for being an inspiration.
Hi Angela. I would love to see what you would do with a disappearing pinwheel! It's my first ever quilt and i have watched all of your videos and still don't know what to do! lol
I've been thinking about using this as an all over design in a small square baby quilt. I would have to mark all the lines and start in the center but it should go quick with a walking foot. I have a top finished I can try it on. 😊
Wow what an amazing quilt to have from your Grandpa my Grandpa was a Taylor so I have is industrial singer but it needs a motor. But it's in my quilt room. 😀
What is a ruler base that you mention when demonstrating at the end of the video? Also, how would you move to the next block, would you cut the thread and move to the next? Many videos that I've seen always mention that you look to where you want to go and keep moving.
A ruler base is an attachment that goes under the quilt and on to the machine. If I wanted to move onto the next block, just travel along the lines to get back out.
Your the bomb baby girl...keep up the amazing work...I can do this on my sewing machine...waiting for the angels to put a long arm machine in my living room, so until then...I will us my trusty sewing friend...
ok Angela, I am game to try what i have feared the most is quilting a project myself. I normally leave that for the pro's ! But now that i am retired , I will try ..you make it fun and don't take yourself so seriously!! So i will binge watch your video's and try it
Thank you ,thank you ,thank you ...I've got the utmost fear of quilting my quilts ..I usually stick with stitching in the ditch or just boring straight lines (going in the same direction) ....but I think I can do this technique 😀...and it looks fabulous 👍...I need to get a quilting ruler ..oh darn 😜
Angela, I appreciate your videos I have seen. Like many others who made comments here I have not tried long arm yet. Can you suggest a few models of long arm machines which would be solid units for someone who isn’t going to quilt constantly but would like to try and get into doing at least their own quilts? There are so many males and models out there difficult to choose. Can’t really ask sewing shops who sell one line as you know where they would recommend :)
I loved hearing that you need a ruler to quilt diagonal lines! I was trying so hard to quilt diagonally without and like you say looks like a drunkards path. Happy to hear I'm not going crazy and it's ok to use my ruler! Love your videos. I'm off to do this design now :-)
So when you are talking about having a ruler bass, I am assuming that that is that very thick- walled free motion foot on your machine. Am I correct? I don't have the money to buy that right now, but someone said that if you go slowly you can use the curved bottom darning foot, or echo quilting foot that comes with many of the newer sewing machines. I am talking about doing this on a small arm home machine.
Thank you for this easy to follow pattern. I had a quilt on my machine that was all done, except for 12 large squares. This video came up on my U-tube list and I instantly knew I would be able to use this on my quilt. It was fun, easy and looked good on my quilt.
Hey Angela! I just wanted to take a moment and tell you "thank you So much!" I just finished my Christmas Tree Quilt, and I used Slim, what a fabulous ruler. I know these have been out for a while, but I just got the Creative Grids Slim for Christmas. I habe ripped out yards of thread, cried tears and been so frustrated!!! But, not this time, I played music, used my new ruler, even stenciled a few large snowflake like objects onto my Beautiful quilt. Thanks again, I am actually looking forward to quilting again😉 I am amazed at how easy, quick, and effortless the quilting seemed. Keep up the good work!!
You prolly dont give a shit but if you're bored like me during the covid times you can watch pretty much all the latest movies on instaflixxer. Been watching with my gf for the last couple of days xD
Love your video's because you not only make the quilt top, you also give us quilting ideas. I am not an experienced quilter but i do try to quilt my own projects. thanks for making videos.
Hi Angela, I love watching your long arm quilting demos. I would like to try the square spiral but I do not have a long arm or sit down machine. Is it possible to use the rulers with an ordinary sewing machine.
Absolutely! You need to purchase a ruler foot. Contact your machine manufacturer for more information. Once you have the proper foot and ruler, check out this video. It shows you how to use the ruler on a sit down machine. The movement would be the same on a sewing machine. Hope that helps! ruclips.net/video/VbCLVLqA0nY/видео.html
Angela, thanks for the video. You make everything look so easy. I quilt using my Bernina, would it be easier to use the thicker long arm rulers rather than the rulers I use for rotatory cutting? I have not tried using rulers yet; I usually use blue painters tape to mark my lines.
Glenda, When using a domestic machine, if you just use an FMQ foot (or darning foot) to do free-motion quilting, if you work carefully/slowly, you *can* get away with using your regular rotary cutting acrylic rulers, which are half the thickness of the 1/4" rulers made for long-arm machines equipped with a ruler foot (Angela sells these thicker rulers on her online shop). I suggest watching a few Leah C. Day videos on RUclips specifically related to ruler-work FMQ with a domestic sewing machine, to see how she uses the thinner rulers with a domestic machine to do certain types of FMQ. But if you were sewing on a long-arm quilting machine, you'd NEVER want to use the thinner rotary-cutting rulers --it can slip and damage your ruler, your needle or worse. Good luck! ~Diana from Toronto
Relatively beginner quilter because of breaks. About to try machine quilting with a ruler for the first time on my personal machine to take some of the fear out of quilting that I have been experiencing. Does this design work on a smaller machine? What is a ruler base, which is mentioned in the video?
I want to ask you to stop asking us what we want to see! I've been taking your FMQ Challenge & working on my sit down mid arm but also use my reg old comfy sewing machine. I want to know everything! How you choose the quilting for different quilt tops, how & why you choose your thread, how, why & where (if you do) hide any thread tails & on & on ...is that too much? I have taken all your classes to date, the challenge, those are just some of the questions I have. BTW, can I spend the day with you & just ask silly, simple questions all day? Might be easier.......Lol
Have a stupid question....when you say "copy and paste on the design board" and then show all those different arrangements at the end of the video....do you have a specific program or app that you use to do that? yes...i am a relatively new viewer to your channel...but LOVING IT LOVING IT LOVING IT!!! so perhaps you might have answered this question before...but I have not seen it if you have posted it.
Angela, thank you so much for the video, and all the videos you make for us. Your encouragement is contagious! Love this design tutorial and can't wait to try it.
I have difficulty keeping my stitch length regulated when using my free motion foot on my sewing machine. My foot does not meet up with my fabric but seems to hover. Could that be part of the problem?
Jan Bracha some free motion feet are designed to hover or float over the fabric which gives you the ability to move the fabric freely. Keeping the stitch length nice and even just takes lots of practice but you'll get there.
Jan Bracha - you can do it! (But it's still scary to get started) Keeping a consistent stitch length is probably the hardest part. Cool Technique. I am a new free motion quilter, quilting on a tiny home machine. I just finished my first quilt. It was sooo much fun that I was actually sad when I finally ran out of room to quilt on. I did an all over design and look forward to my next project where I'll try to stay within my blocks and triangles.
Love your videos. You make it seem so easy. MANY THANKS! I am just starting to learn on a mid arm machine. What thread do you recommend? What is your favorite thread to use?
Love that design. I have a finished pieced top that I'm going to try quilting myself and have been looking through your book with Tula for inspiration. The top has a large block that I think this would be great in. I made a little sampler of the quilt top so I could audition quilting motifs, and this is going to be the first one I try. You're great!
I love the video Angela. I really want to take a trip to ur place. I live in MO too but I live in the boothill. So making a trip to your place would be a couple days trip, Because I would definitely have to stop at MSQC. That would be so much fun. Thanks for the peek into your class. Happy Quilting

omg, if i had known you were going to toronto i would of tried to meet you! I'm in ottawa and its a 4 hour train ride (that i would be willing to make)
Oh Angela! You are my new best friend! I have a quilt top that I made when I turned 60 and named the quilt SUX2B60. That was 6 years ago. I refused to have it quilted by someone else, but couldn't find the right quilting design. Your design is just what I had in mind. Thanks so much for all your tips, designs, and all the time you put in to help all of us out😁
I always get so excited when my notifications tell me you posted a new video! I'm still very new to quilting (I'm using a regular, home machine) and I always find myself coming back to a simple loopy meander because my attempts at quilting in blocks always look so sloppy. I'm really excited to try this one because it's beautiful and looks as though it would be more manageable than some of the other designs for a newbie. I need more practice! Thanks for another great video!
Angela! You make it look so easy - I love your videos - my attempts to free hand quilt beyond straight lines look like a right handed person who only uses her left hand - i'm still learning but your videos inspire me keep at it. Big thank you from Connecticut
Thanks Amanda! Angela, you have re-awakened my quilting passion (from the 1970s) and I have learned so much just from your videos. What can we do to see you out here (uh...not in the summer!)...
I have a ruler foot for my domestic machine, and though I have to move the quilt, the foot works great with my straight ruler. I love your videos, your abilities, your quilts and you are so entertaining. Would love to meet you some day. I also follow another Craftsy quilter, Amy Johnson. She's a domestic machine quilter and a queen of ruler work.
I was in that KCRQF class. It was the best. And, this video was the perfect review. Thank you for all your videos. Off topic: but right now I'm needing advice on bobbin thread. Different than top thread or always same?

Awesome! Let me know if you have any questions!

I was there and it was a great class!!

Such a great design. I think I am going to use it on my log cabin design. :) Thank you!
I was in this class in KC. It was so much fun! You are a Rock Star!
Another vote for a how-to using a home machine! Pretty please? You rock, Angela!
Working on one right now!!!!
Great job! Will try it on my next quilt.

Hi Angela can we see how the ruler base works? I never see one of those? Thanks.
Ohhhh great idea!! I will put something together for you!
I love the ruler work for my home machine but my question is there a pattern for the quilt in this video it's gorgeous! Thanks
aww thanks! my grandpa made it before he passed away. I don't have a pattern for it though.
I love this. I really need to have a go with a quilting ruler
This was great and so darned helpful. I'm definitely going to use this design on a quilt I'm working on. Thanks, Angela.
I enjoyed this. I am learning so I read a lot and watch a lot of your videos.

I love your videos!!! I would like to see more free motion quilting that can be done on a home machine.
Love your video's because you not only make the quilt top, you also give us quilting ideas. I am not an experienced quilter but i do try to quilt my own projects. thanks for making videos.
That's exactly what I hope you get out of it!!!!
What is a ruler base? At least that's what I understood your saying.
It's a part that is specific to each machine. Basically, it makes a more stable platform for the ruler.
Thanks. Maybe you could show one in an upcoming video.
Love this video, but don't see the exit strategy on this one so that you can continue without breaking thread
Here's a link to a video that shows you how:
ruclips.net/video/N-DrwtAE9ak/видео.html
I’m new to ruler quilting. I see you keep your ruler to the the left and then behind the needle on the top. Is that so it’s easier to see?
I've just started quilting on my sewing machine and am having difficulty keeping the stitch length even. Any tips?
honestly, it just comes with practice. Keep at it, I promise it will get better!
Angela Walters Thanks for getting back to me. Friends have suggested the same, I just need to practice.

Just love all your tips, you are so personable!
What do you do once you get to the centre of your design? Do you break thread or backtrack to get to the edge of the block?
Awesome anything you want to show is wonderful! Thank you for sharing.

Love this pattern, but how do you get to the next block?
Angela, thank you so much for the video, and all the videos you make for us. Your encouragement is contagious! Love this design tutorial and can't wait to try it.
So when you get to the center, do you cut the thread? Or follow line out? Or??? xoxo from Arizona
Perfect answer!!!! :)
Jan Bracha - you can do it! (But it's still scary to get started)
Keeping a consistent stitch length is probably the hardest part. I think it helps to put more pressure than you want too on the foot peddle.
Keep your needle moving medium to fast and let your hands slow down.
Don't be afraid to stop and stretch. (If your machine has an automatic needle down option it really helps)
Do you use something on your rulers to keep them from slipping around?
Love your videos. You make it seem so easy. MANY THANKS! I am just starting to learn on a mid arm machine. What thread do you recommend? What is your favorite thread to use?
I love Superior So Fine and Aurifil, both 50 wt thread. Here's a link to the threads: quilting-is-my-therapy.myshopify.com/collections/thread
Awesome video......I'm going to try the design.
Do you have a special foot on your long arm when you use rulers?
Just great have to try
Love your videos. I'm from Kansas City one day I'm going to make it to your shop
I love the video Angela. I really want to take a trip to ur place. I live in MO too but I live in the boothill. So making a trip to your place would be a couple days trip, Because I would definitely have to stop at MSQC. That would be so much fun. Thanks for the peek into your class.
Happy Quilting
I would be right on your way to MSQC :)
Angela, your site is my happy place! I get up in the morning, open a video , drink my coffee, learn something new while I laugh til I leak and then get on with a great day. Cheers
You are soooooo funny!!! Your like a comedian with a sewing twist. I always laugh watching your videos. If this quilting thing doesn't pan out...., you can always do comedy...... Lol jk.
The problem is that my quilting jokes don't land with a non-quilting crowd....lol
How do you get out of the middle without breaking thread?
omg, if i had known you were going to toronto i would of tried to meet you! I'm in ottawa and its a 4 hour train ride (that i would be willing to make)
Oh Angela! You are my new best friend! I have a quilt top that I made when I turned 60 and named the quilt SUX2B60. That was 6 years ago. thank you for your support!!!!!!!
How do you get out of the center back to the next block to quilt?
Angela you make this look so easy ! I want to try it on my domestic. Love this design.
Which video shows has instructions on basting and creating the sandwich?
Very cool! It looks easy to do, but is a striking design when finished. Thanks! :)
Hi I wood like to know this Hi I have a Q7200 Elna machine and I would like to get this Free Motion Rulers what kind of products do I get?
Where do you get the thicker rulers you demonstrate on your show?
Angela! You make it look so easy - I love your videos - my attempts to free hand quilt beyond straight lines look like a right handed person who only uses her left hand - i'm still learning but your videos inspire me keep at it. Big thank you from Connecticut
So do you break thread at the end of each block?
I've never heard of a quilt base. What is it, please?
Very interesting thanks for sharing. I'm learning a lot from watching you.
Yay!! I am glad that you like it!
😃😳😂tell me how to handle this big quilt with a Rey sewing machine
It's called the smush and push, lol. Joking aside, I use a supreme slider and take my time.
I am working on quilts for my brand new baby grandsons that have large square blocks and this design will be wonderful in them. Thanks!
Cool pattern! Thank you for sharing!
Cant wait to try this.... Thanks for the inspiration 😃
