    I'm still sad that they took out some of the games, where Wade plays actually plays them, and put something else to replace them. I was so excited to see a clear game of Pac Man, where he gets the coin, but that didn't happen. I was so confused why there was a racing part in the movie, when in the book, even though everyone knew what the first clue was, no one knew where to even start.
    I was anticipating on watching Artemis and Wade's rivalry. But they starting flirting the moment they saw each other.

    • @nicholastosoni707

      You have to read between the lines a bit for the movie. There's a thing called "gambler's fallacy," and it keeps you coming back to the casino table--or the race--even when you're close to losing everything. Not a bad thing; just how the human brain is wired. The King Kong who knocks your car out of the race is there to make you go "I'll find another way around him." Whoops! Not so fast. You have to go into the Halliday Archives, go through the videos of his life, fight through boredom, and *stay until you hit the certain line of dialogue which contains the hint about how to beat the race.*
      The narrative beat of the _Joust_ thing is *there,* it's just streamlined and put into a different form.

      I personally really liked that they change all of the challenges in the movie. I already know how he does it in the book, one of the best part was observing him figure it out for the first time. I wouldn’t get that feeling again if the challenges were all the same in the movie. But since they were different, I also didn’t know what he had to and was once again observing him figure it out.

    • @weeb8731

      I was kind of sad that Everquest references were lost in the movie. I never read the book, but I felt that there was a gaping hole in the movie where EQ and WoW should have been. Lots of 80's arcade game and movie references, lots of recent online game references, but 1999-2009 got lost.

    • @beanswater
      @beanswater 6 лет назад +83

      The games he mentioned are mostly atari and arcade games, it's totally possible that he could've just not owned or played on a nintendo console. I know when I was a kid the only nintendo experience I had was when I went to my cousin's house to play it.

    • @craigs71
      @craigs71 6 лет назад +53

      A self proclaimed gamer has never played on ANY Nintendo system? Mario Kart was mentioned in the movie so.......

    • @beanswater
      @beanswater 6 лет назад +67

      First of all, who declared that you needed to play nintendo to call yourself a gamer?
      Secondly, I'm sure there's plenty of people like that. It's not like nintendo had monopoly over consoles in that era. There's sega and atari consoles(which he kept mentioning games of btw). Like I said, it's possible to not own a nintendo but still have opportunities to play it occasionally. Maybe he went to his friend/family to play mario kart and liked it enough to write about it. Maybe he already had an atari and his parents couldn't afford / didn't want to buy another console.

    Even though Halo was far in time after these games, it’s the game I grew up with and it was one of the best games I ever played. I’m glad he payed tribute to it in the movie with the assault rifles, the Halo area at the shop. Also the gears of war saw gun, liked that one also.

      John Smith don’t go in expecting too much. There’s basically zero 80s references in the movie and the movie is almost 100% different than the book.

    • @paralentor
      @paralentor 6 лет назад

      Then you didn't see the movie. There are TONs of 80's References. The race alone had a ton.

      @carolinaestigarribia7052 6 лет назад +6

      paralentor I definitely saw the movie. Sadly. I was comparing the book to the movie. Not only does the movie never mention Halliday’s obsession with the 80s and the fact that basically all of the keys and gates are 80s themed tasks. They changed everything, a little 80s character that shows up for half a second in the corner of the screen compared to the abundance of 80s references in the book is basically a joke.

    Hm, how curious. When I read Ready Player One, the first person to come to mind when Halliday was described wasn’t Richard Garriott or Howard Hughes, but John Carmack. Although it’s pretty safe to say that the Halliday of the book is much less congenial and charismatic than Carmack- and that’s saying something.

  • @Alboreoh

    Ultima Online wasn't the first MMO, it was just the first to be popular. Also if you google this tidbit, the first response is that Meridian59 is believed to have been the first, but it seems like there's conjecture on the topic and it depends on whether or not you count MUDs. Anyway, just thought it was funny that he said UO was the first MMO when it's relatively common knowledge that it wasn't. Or maybe that isn't common knowledge, idk.

      Movie was solid, I think it made it something anyone could enjoy. But it just can't match the depth of the story, characters, and details. Also not sure how I feel about some of the changes. That said it did add somethings that worked really well on film like the shining, the race, and some character alterations. Book still is the overall better experience 10/10!

    So it was you. Just seen Spielberg's version of your "Ready Player One" ...
    WOW - I love videogames.
    My two favourites are Beatmania (I'm a professional musician - it keeps me sharp)
    ... and Smash TV (as you know, a superior update of Robotron)
    MAME is the best ever program .. it lets you play EVERY BEST GAME EVER! (as you know)
    I believe there are actually "front ends" out there that let you go into a virtual arcade and play your favourite game within MAME! - like an OASIS-style virtual arcade.
    I still use MameUI64 ... but there are loads of other options.
    MAME is easily the best program on my computer - and with my X-Arcade dual controller that I picked up off the floor in TK-Maxx for £60, 15 years ago, and still going strong.... I still love playing all of the classics.
