Rest in peace, Alan Myers. Josh Freese, the drummer in this video, says that Alan was his motivation to learn the drums. How appropriate he ended up behind the Devo kit. I saw both in concert with Devo, Alan in '81 and Josh thirty years later. Two very different but incredible stick men, and both Spudboys to the core.
I was here! Devo wasn't on the bill and I saw what I thought was just really rabid devo fans walking around in devo outfits only to find out that it was actually Devo!!!!! Fucking lucky to be me!
I’m sure some of you have had this same experience…you go to a DEVO show and there are two factions, spuds and ninnies/twits. The ninnies/twits have heard whip it and have no idea what’s about to happen or how heavy DEVO can be. By the end of the show they’re converted into spuds. Perhaps some of you were at one of these DEVO conversion camps and that’s how you were saved!
I saw this Lollapalooza tour, back when it was an actual national tour. I was blown away by Devo - I already loved them but they secured my DEVOtion during their performance.
This is the way it was intended. They released a couple of indie singles before the album was released. The singles were guitar driven and rocked. Eno produced the 1st album and changed the songs from being guitar driven to synth driven. He really watered their sound down. This is the way the song was originally (actually it had even less synth). The original version of Jocko Homo rips.
not true, most of Eno's contributions to Q:?A:! were removed from the final mix by Devo. The only tracks where his production was left in tact were on "Space Junk" and "Shrivel Up", plus some backing vocals on Uncontrollable Urge. What you're referring to is Ken Scott's awful production on Duty Now, which absolutely castrated songs like this and most egregiously, gave us the completely toothless version of "smart patrol" that ended up on the record. Jerry can't stand to listen to the album to this day for that reason, as well as the inclusion of solo tracks written my Mark that approached the esoteric as he and Ken started working alone, such as "S.I.B"
@@Uglatto it's Gerry btw and your absolutely correct about Eno's keyboards being removed and most of his vocals I saw an interview with Mark where he said when they were mixing Mark would wait for Eno to look away and he would slide his sliders down on the board without him seeing hahaha
The beat is just isn't the same without Alan on drums. Saw DEVO live way back when, and they were the tightest! Alan could keep a beat like a machine. This live performance kept slightly speeding up and slowing down. Don't get me wrong, it's still DEVO, but it doesn't quite *feel* like true DEVO without that exact back beat.
Me and my best friend were at this show the year of 1996 also the K R O Q weenie roast show no doubt and, garbage, kicked ass that year, I'm starting to feel my years, I miss my best friend and Irvine Meadows and those years with Devo now.
Sometimes I think this song is derogatory, but at other times I think it is complementary. I guess that is how art is. Is he trashing the blockhead or praising him? Is DEVO the blockhead, or are non-critical thinking people the blockhead? He also mentions L7 at the end.
This is so much fucking better than the shit that was popular in '94. I fucking hated the 90's except for Nirvana. Fucking corporate rockers Pearl jam sucked. Trying to pass themselves off as grunge. Fuck off Pearl jam. You fucking suck
im bald myself, and so be it jerry should have had the decency to tell everyone he is getting the same treatment wayne rooney and david beckham got,he is still bald but undercover.
My favorite Devo song it has the kooky new wave sounds but has a seriousness about it that I love. Obv the blockheads are the Nazis in this song. Check out 0:57
THIS IS THE BEST VERSION OF THEIR BEST SONG !!!!!
that ending is killer 😊
Fuck, this is my favorite Devo song now

Totally agree my friend, Alan was a human drum machine and Josh carried on treating Alan's work with great respect.
Mark Mothersbaugh = coolest Nerd ever
I love this fucking song. I found it really late. It's heavy and serious
That was the best version of this song
I was here! Devo wasn't on the bill and I saw what I thought was just really rabid devo fans walking around in devo outfits only to find out that it was actually Devo!!!!! Fucking lucky to be me!
Wow! That's amazing

11/8 in the verses
Josh Freese on the drums is outta his freaking mind. Great show by Devo.
Freese takes this to the next level for sure.

so much fun to play on the drums. love this change.
I like this live version, it sounds more "metal" than the album version.
monkeyboy4746 it was lollapalooza in the mid 90s. Of course it's gonna have a more grungy sound

If you ever want to hear Devo rock out, this is the song for you. Thanks, Mutant!
An absolute masterpiece from one of the greatest, most original bands ever.
Chills always seem to run down from the back of my neck, then down my spine when I hear any DEVO music..
L7 Blockhead!!!

The verses are awesome especially with that quirky yet dark synth part
I caught mark’s trousers in Dublin,I’ve never been so proud.

Truly one of the most moshable songs I've ever heard.
Weird because if you listen to the album version of this song it's way more chill. But this performance has a very different vibe.
@@miguelito2860 I'd agree with that.
Love this concert
That was dope 🙌
loud, louder, LOUDER!
90 degree angle....got it squared off these lads.
That's the way to do it; drummer's class as well....
Bassist is literally playing a right hand bass upside down strings and all
That's Devo for ya
Wish I could get my hands on one of those original Steinberger basses.
I remember when they were EVERYWHERE!!
I've been listening to Devo since 1979, and I've only just realised that Jerry's bass is strung right- handed! See also Elizabeth Cotten
Tremendous fucking guitar solo.
AWESOME!!!!!!!
Bob 1 plays the fuck out that git!
EPIC!

I was there
great band of the 80s
Josh Freese slaughtering the skins as he channels Alan Myers. Truly awesome thing to watch.

Love it
Yeaaaah!!!!! :)
devo predicts Rob Porter! amazing how they told us again and again how things will be, and now are!

Satisfaction from this gig is extra killer too!

Josh freese great drummer but i prefer Alan Meyers may he rest in peace!!😢😢
So this song disses the Nazi's and quite rightly so....
copyed by many surpassed by none
This song is about the Nazi's. Watch closely...
The only song that white men can successfully dance to.
