    Great work guys and amazing conditions…I’m a massive fan of circle hooks …..the drag needs to be set right, count to at least 5 before you begin to wind and don’t strike. Since swapping from big red suicides to owner circles my catch rate has improved significantly.

    • @Saltfix
      @Saltfix  2 года назад

      Interesting. So you run a really light drag? Then tighten once the fish is running.
      We just set to fighting drag and leave in the holder, works good on big reds but sucks for circles

    • @michaelwest188
      @michaelwest188 2 года назад +2

      Yes that’s right. A fairly light drag set and I tighten the drag after the hook up which helps set the hook into the corner of the mouth. If you strike it just pulls the hook right out of the mouth.

      @@Saltfix circle hooks should be tied with a Snell knot so the gape in the hook kicks back towards the leader line I fish with drag set and always hook corner of the mouth on load up 👍 hope this helps

      @@michaelwest188 yeah I know you don’t strike with em.
      Don’t know, we have a decent conversion rate with suicide style. Snapper still have that bony mouth that hooks just scrape along. I’ll give em a bit of a try

    We're still at odds about circle hooks hah. Personally I'm a fan of size 6/0 tho, tends to reduce deep hooking

  • @johnsavage1109
    @johnsavage1109 2 года назад +1

    You must, must, must, tie a circle hook by bringing the line through the front of the eye and tying off on the shank. Check the net you will find it.

    Great session boys. Do you get notified if someone catches one of your tagged fish? Would be great to hear how far they have gone/grown.

    • @Saltfix
      @Saltfix  2 года назад +1

      Yes if someone recaptures and reports it I get the info on roughly where and how much it’s grown. I’ve had one recapture so far was in a similar area and grew a few cm in six months.
      Hopefully this kind of data is helpful to fisheries in the future

  • @barrieprice7073

    Have to rig circles differently to big reds hold hook point towards you line through the eye and Snell hook will sit up this gives it the angle to hook up in corner of fishes mouth

    • @Saltfix
      @Saltfix  2 года назад

      Yep don’t usually use em.
      I’ll make an effort to try with a modified set up

  • @snappyvalleyfishing
    @snappyvalleyfishing 2 года назад +1

    Not sure how you tie your circle hooks but I find that will get a better hook up using a Snell knot through the front of the hook first. A uni knot is 50/50 and can draw the hook from the mouth. Great fish.

    • @Saltfix
      @Saltfix  2 года назад +1

      That makes sense I was using a uni knot, I find the smash and grab approach of shallow water pinks just doesn’t give the circle hook time to do it’s job.
      If fished on a bait runner or in free spool the fish wold have more time to swallow and the hook could work as it’s supposed to. For me , I like the big red pattern
