He is committing a crime. There is no such thing as a test shift or free work for multiple days. He is taking advantage of you. If you report him to the labour board he will be in big trouble. Its completely illegal in Canada to require unpaid test work.

He could have been upfront about it. He should have paid you, even if you worked one hour and he did not want to employ you!. Please don't be nervous or apologetic about asking him. A good employer would have informed you of what is going to happen and when you will be paid. I m based in UK and been to Canada a few times. I would put it down to bad experience and look elsewhere. Don't give him another chance without paying you. Goo dluck.

Here in Canada we always clarify the things that are typically "unspoken". If you get a bad feeling about something, you should bring it up politely, standing up for yourself should not be seen as an "awkward" thing to do. Perhaps try to get a job in customer service at the airport or customer service where you can leverage your japanese skills in order to earn a higher wage ( there are a bunch being advertised online)? Best of luck.

I'm from Japan and I faced the same problems. "test shifts" are what is called a training shifts. The employer still have to pay you for the training. The employer, also depending your employment agreement during the probation period can terminate you but they still have to pay you for the amount of hours worked. I feel your pain, as I was tricked a few times too.

Nothis is illegal in canada, and you should be paid for your trial work and demand payment for all the time you already worked for right away. You can choose to report him if he does not want to give you the wage. Also, just run, this place sounds too sketchy, you don't want to give them your sin number and personal information as you don't know what they will do with it. Hey, I am sorry this happened. Unfortunately bad people are everywhere. Now as newcomer to Canada it’s easy to take advantage of you. Most post secondary schools have a department to support foreign students. You should seek them out and ask them questions to know your rights. Also, as you befriend Canadians you will get a better guard as friends will likely be offended when someone takes advantage of you. Everything will be ok. Focus on what you can do and remember that moving to another country with another languages is hard and brave. Don’t neglect socializing and try to look for clubs at your school so you can build friends that can help you get through the hard part and act as a source of local knowledge.

If he is Canadian or American, the best way is to say, "I'm really enjoying working here. What days are payday?" He has to tell you the pay schedule. In the U.S., he has to ask you how many tax credits you choose (there is a worksheet). Don't ask him if the job is paid or shifts were tests. Don't put those ideas into his head. Speak about what you want, payday. It's normal to ask. Ordinarily I try to learn what days are paydays from coworkers but it's ok to ask the owner. He should not be vague - the question must be answered. In the U.S., if he doesn't answer, you might have justification for quitting and if you have prior wages in the year, you might be able to collect unemployment, which he would have to pay part of. Not sure about Canada. But be sure to check - if you have wages in the last 12 months and if you quit for good reason, you might be able to collect unemployment money every week by following the unemployment directions online.

    • @Tina-Japan

I don't know what type of work your visa allows you, but should try to apply in manufacturing jobs or maintenance rather than service jobs. Manufacturing usually pay much more and they offer unionized condition even for temporary workings, that how I paid my university. Where I lived you can just walk in an industrial park to see all the hiring boards outside manufactures. You can also check with hospital if they are hiring cleaning staff or cafeteria staff, the pay is usually similar to manufacturing. On the long run, if you decide to stay in Canada, I would suggest that you find a job in your real domain of study or learn a new trade. Usually Ontario and Quebec are the manufacturing hub in Canada, while the west is more on resources and services. Anyways, if you ever want to learn french, you should try to study in Quebec city or Montreal, people are very nice and the life is less expensive than in BC, especially in Quebec city. Cheers and good luck.

@@Tina-Japan Hi Tina, I hope you find a nice job. If you ever visit Quebec, you will probably arrive in Montreal first. I suggest you take a fews days there to visit the city, see the old port, stroll in little italy and le Plateau, many things to see and do in Montreal. The nicest way to get to Quebec city is the Via rail train because it goes on the scenic path especially as it climbs the cliffs to get to Quebec central station, Gare du Palais. Cheapest way is by bus. While in Quebec I strongly suggest that you also visit the Charlevoix region, le train de Charlevoix offers excursions but croisières AML also do. The best time to visit are late spring, summer and early fall like end of september to mid-october. Summer is probably more expensive. Cheers!

what he is doing is wrong. as an owner of a business for 25 years, you can ask someone to work so you can see their skills, but you can't ask them to do it for free unless you both have agreed to the terms and it has been documented and both parties have signed said document.
You don't want to work at any job when it starts off like this. I would suggest reporting them but at the least... look elsewhere because it will only get worse.

If you do not know how to cook then maybe you could get trained at a restaurant while you work, and get paid at the same time. If you studied to become a chef then it should be easy, for you to get a job at a restaurant.
If a restaurant owner does not like your work performance then I think you will lose your job. Try to avoid making mistakes!
There are people who want to work at restaurants, but eventually learn this is not their cup of tea.
I think part time should be around 4 hour shifts. Full time around 8 hour shifts, and maybe some people work more hours at a restaurant.
