    At the beginning of syllables shva was defaulty pronounced like short PataH, like the /a/ in 'cat'. Because the vocal tract configuration of the Laryngeal consonants אהחע was weaker and thus more amenable to vowel quality variation, the ancient scholars felt it was necessary to explicitly express the exact quality of a vocal shva on a Laryngeal, also known as a 'guttural'. This led to the creation of Hatef shvas. Because the vocal tract configuration of non Laryngeals was more consistent, the scholars left shvas under these consonants unaccompanied by vowels since their realization was more predictable and doing so would be redundant.

    There are or Not diphthongs in hebrew?

    • @Homeschoolingtorah
      @Homeschoolingtorah  Год назад +1

      I guess it depends on how you define them. I feel like a yod after a consonant acts like a diphthong in English. It has helped me pronounce things better.
