At age 13, Evan (Logan Lerman) comforts Kayleigh (Irene Gorovaia) about her father's abuse, but her brother Tommy (Jesse James) is supremely jealous.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Final Destination 2 screenwriters Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber make their directorial debut with the sci-fi thriller The Butterfly Effect. Evan Treborn (Ashton Kutcher with facial hair) wants to free himself from his disturbing childhood memories. As a kid, he often blacked out for long periods of time and tried to detail his life in a journal. As a young adult, he revisits the journal entries to figure out the truth about his troubled childhood friends Kayleigh (Amy Smart), Lenny (Elden Henson), and Tommy (William Lee Scott). When he discovers he can travel back in time in order to set things right, he tries to save his beloved friends. However, he finds out that relatively minor changes can make major problems for the future. The Butterfly Effect also stars Eric Stoltz, Ethan Suplee, and Melora Walters. The title was inspired by the story A Sound of Thunder by Ray Bradbury.

Hate to add Ancient Greek Philosophy to the mix but what he did by not being in her life at all (in order for her to be happy and knowing that the chances are low anyways. I'd don't believe it was destined by fate, a relationship will work if both sides got each other's backs), was pious or "just" according to Socrates/Plato in Plato's Euthyphro.

It's true. Depending on the events, the person's personality may differ. That's the whole nurture theory for you. Another movie that explores such themes is megamind.
Difference between being raised by his mom and his dad. Dad was an abusive, child molesting idiot but Tommy and Kailey wanted to live with him to be close to Evan. Their mom was the loving, nurturing type but she lives far from their dad so they can’t see Evan. That’s why in one outcome where everyone is living better, it’s because Evan made sure he told Kailey he never wanted to see her again when they were kids, so she ran to her mom and Tommy followed his sister, so they were raised better, but sadly never got to grow up with Evan.
Makes sense actually: When you are emotionally charged and extreme you can be pushed to any extreme easily.

@@Wasserkaktus Very true. I remember the other ending. This is the theatrical ending when he tells her that he never wants to see her but the uncut version is him being stillborn like you said. What’s crazy about that is he learns he shouldn’t be born during the fortune teller scene and afterwards when his mom told him that other babies prior were stillborns which is only in the uncut version

i feel like priveleged people got each other's backs. he had evan's back and the goofy girlfriend had her "fun" boyfriend's back....but evan also guarded kayleigh more fully because he loved her. and kayleigh and tommy werent priveleged so kaylegh blames herself and tommy get infuriated that the world hates him and gets himself in trouble.

What is Tommy's problem? His sister is no object he owns and Evan is one guy he can trust because he knows him.
JReed1985 He has romantic feelings for his sister, because his dad used to make them be sexual with each other, its messed his mind up.
He is abused by his father and beyond messed up. Also, a lot of abused children become processive of their siblings who are also being abused.

Well let’s put it this way. Tommy is extremely protective of his sister. He doesn’t want her to be with anyone or anyone to potentially hurt her. He knows what his dad does to her so he didn’t want his friend near her either. Even though he knew that she liked Evan, he didn’t want to lose the one person he had left.

she reminded me at that age of my high school sweetheart who looked like her. Yeah this movie brought back some HARD memories.
Well I can relate somewhat to that. It sucks man but this does serve as a reminder to me. It was a short window for me and this movie (and not even music that I listen to doesn't remind me of that brief window like this one does) details it in a way 10 years before my brief window.
I tried to catch that lightening in a bottle twice (be terms of by force my determination). I got burnt multiple times.
So you're not alone.

I enjoyed it but it's COMPLETELY FULL OF PLOTHOLES. Only simpletons think it's a genius film. I only enjoyed the performances, and there was significant emotional power for me, but the plot is so flawed. And it doesn't really get the meaning of "butterfly effect" either.
