      +Marco Mark I feel like it was the best ending. Although I'm a huge sucker for the ending where they wanna go out for coffee (as cliché as it was) because after all the shit they went through I feel like they both just deserved it. The stalker ending I also liked because it wasn't a straight up happy ending, it just showed that Evan still loved her and wanted her in his life, even after it seemed like it was never meant to happen he still went chasing after her. The stillborn ending was unbelievably depressing as fuck but in all honesty the directors cut did tell the best and most powerful story, and ended with evan making the hugest sacrifice imaginable so his friends and family could live happy lives. Overall if you gave me a choice for what was considered the true ending, I'd probably say either directors cut or theatre ending, but I do love the theatre ending and felt it was the most satisfying. It shows that Life has consequences and some things aren't meant to be, but it also shows that things aren't totally bleak either. It had the best balance out of the endings because while it's still sad, Evan and everyone else in this timeline clearly are living much better lives than if Kaylee and Evan met as kids.

    • @MelindaGreen
      @MelindaGreen 8 лет назад +82

      +allwalledup Evan wan't the only one who made such a sacrifice. His father and grandfather tried the same thing, and his stillborn siblings succeeded. I agree that it's sad that way but it's also best. The other versions don't quite work because Evan keeps all his actions secret from the people he loves, and that unfairly distances him from them. That's why he doesn't deserve Kayleigh and the other guy does.

      I am surprised that this movie didn't get higher ratings. After watching all the alternate endings, I also agree that the theatrical one where Evan and Kayleigh make eye contact, both stop, think, turn around, then keep walking is the best ending. AND the Oasis song from 2002 "Stop Crying Your Heart Out" makes adds a great touch. But maybe with the song by Oasis being played over top of the other endings, they also would seem to work well. Credit to Oasis, they are an awesome band. IF the damn brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher would have gotten along better, they could have surpassed the Beatles in their fame! That is what many critics have said about the powerful songs by Oasis.

      I think the way that the story went with his connection to keileigh, tommy and lenny sets up for the fact that he was always fated to fall short in his “corrections.” Tommy was fated to either hate Evan or never know he existed, their father is bound to abuse someone no matter what, and Evan is forced to learn his lesson with his power and correct it all. I agree the scene of keileigh walking alone is so powerful, I think the director meant for the theatrical cut to seem like the most satisfying one for Evan specifically, even if he doesn’t get the girl. He uses the power to right all his wrongs and make the girl he loves truly happy, which is a depressingly beautiful and selfless concept.

      earp1673 I agree with you man. Plus, we have to look at the other two miscarriages. Is it possible that those two babies had the same powers, and that they grew up and wrecked their timelines and took the same route Evan did? Or, maybe Evan's dad caused the deaths of those other two babies to try and stop the curse, but couldn't bring himself to do it to his wife a third time, hence Evan was born. Just watched the movie again with the stillborn ending. I think that one is the best. In the ending where Evan sees her in NY and just keeps walking, that doesn't take into account all the brain damage he sustained. However, in that ending it's safe to say that the ONLY jump he actually made was to threaten Kalie, and after that never did it again, undoing the brain damage. I still say the stillborn ending leaves the least plotholes.

    I liked the director's cut ending because it's consistent with Jason (Evan's father) trying to kill him when he was 7, saying "It's the only way," and explains why his mother had two previous stillbirths...meaning his could've-been older siblings also had the time-travel gift and must have "lived" interesting time-travel-filled lives as well, until they decided to kill themselves in the womb. He just followed the suicide cycle until Jason (the dad) was out of the picture for good so his mom could move on with another man who didn't carry the gene with the "curse."

When his memory is being 'rebuilt', Kayleigh hitches a ride to visit Evan at age 13 after he moved away. People don't realize (and it's not even mentioned in the DVD commentary) that the driver is Karl, the bald prisoner who would exist in that reality before going to the same prison as Evan

    After everything happened Evan wanted to hurt others as little as possible. This ending makes sense because him saying a few mean things to Kaylee was far less hurtful than him killing himself as a fetus and putting his mother through the hell of a stillbirth so the ending shows how he managed to create a reality that benefits everybody. But of course he being the only one truly affected by it by grieving the relationship he wished he could have had with Kaylee. A relationship that just wasn't meant to be.

      I agree but what Evan should have done was go back to the time where the mail box exploded. Do not give his friend the piece of metal shard but still give his motivational speech...This in turn will probably avoid one killing the other, and the dog being saved. But again the baby and the mother would still have died. Too bad he did not go back to that memory again and tried to change it again to avoid his hands being blown off. It seemed in that instance though the mail box exploded a lot faster then before since the mother was still halfway in the lawn. But since there is no real measure of time here since its a quick flashback, I guess it was overlooked.

    Theatrical version is the best one imo.
    While the happy ending seems good, it's just seems too perfect. In the movie, every time he thinks that he fixed things, not everything is perfect. (e.g. when his friends are alright, but his mom is dying from lung cancer.)
    So in this version, having them walk away from each other shows that not everything is exactly perfect, but our main character is willing to sacrifice his relationship with Kayleigh because everything else is way better than it could have been. He has learned his lesson.
    Also having them going for coffee makes the previous scene where he scares her away and the sacrifice means lesser. It's too perfect and makes the viewer lose suspension of disbelief.

    Theatrical ending is the best ending, in my opinion. Evan actually gets to learn his lesson and moves on knowing that the girl he loves is probably happy. Not only is it needlessly cruel to imply she'd be better off if he didn't exist, that doesn't even make sense. He wasn't the reason why she was stuck with her abusive father and crazy brother. I don't think it's worth the "ohhhhhh" moment when you realize his mom had previous miscarriages.

      Well she said the only reason that she didn't move in with her mom was because she knew Evan was in the neighborhood and she wanted to stay because she knew if she left she would never see Evan again. Also it makes more sense for when the father tried to kill his own son, if there was a way out where his son could live a happy life I doubt he would have tried to kill him. It only makes sense if Evan was just never meant to exist in the first place and it would be best for everyone in his life

    The Director's Cut is by far the most powerful version. However, it makes no sense that he was not born because if he wasn't born then he would not be able to go back in time to make sure he was born. Additionally, his mother would have probably resorted to chain smoking or worse, I mean this was her third still birth. Therefore the theatrical cut is the better option because it follows the timeline but instead he gives up on the love of his life to let her live a good life. The happy ending could also have been done although it would not have left the same mark in my mind. Very underrated film, one of my favorite films now because it really makes you question the choices you make and how we are not meant to play God.

      K Smith All the endings were good, but to me at least, the theatrical/final cut on the dvd fit the best. He really learned something from all of this and we get the clear ending that him and Kaley are happy.
      The Director's cut definitely had kind of a shock factor to it but Evan never came across as the type that would kind of give up like that. That ending turned it into a noble sacrifice kind of story, and it just didn't feel too fit..The audience really likes Evan from start to finish.
      The others all had great appeal and mystery to them, but I argue that it would show that didn't learn anything from his experience. Even though we kind of want him to pursue Kaley again, we respect more of the fact that he refrains, for the first true time in the narrative.

      Riley Courter Indeed, it put a conclusion on the father aspect but audiences wanted Evan to learn. As Close described it, it was a homage to film noire, but audiences wanted Douglas to actually defeat her.

      Like why couldn't he go into an entry before they blew up the mailbox and just not do it.
      And then after he kisses Kayleigh later on.
      Instead of using any kind of blade he can just promise to Tommy that he won't see Kayleigh and then he can report Tommy to some form of police or see Kayleigh in secret.
      And then for the whole "My dad never hit me, he saved it all for Tommy."
      He could have just threatened the dad again except this time threatened the dad into not touching either of the kids.

      @danielingisigorsson1972 9 лет назад +15

      I felt the urge to respond to that for some reason. I like the directors cut ending the most although it's a bit strange how he would have killed himself. I tried to explain this to myself like this: every time his life changes, he still has all the memories, scars and skills from all the other lives. Like the new sex moves, the marks on his palms when looking like jesus. So it is possible that somehow he would be able to strangle himself to death because he already knows how to move his limbs. But one thing I can't explain is how he can actually die by being choked as a fetus. But otherwise, my favourite movie!!

    The original ending has the most power imo, as it meant that for him to have a "normal" life without all the mayhem, he had to remove the one girl from his life he loved most. The directors cut wasn't bad, but just didn't match the film as naturally imo, as in all previous clips it had always been about being with Kaley.

    I think the one where he burns his journals is the better option mainly just because it shows that instead of just ending his life to "save" everyone else he manged to keep everyone sane and not hurt them. I think it is also just better because it is saying that he is giving up on going back in time to keep things from happening and it just going to start over.

    One of the best movies ever made.
    According to me, the director's cut alternative ending (the one in hospital) is so much better. Let me explain why.
    First, it gave us clear explanations about the stillbirths Evan's mother experienced : we can easily assume that all the children she had made the same choice than Evan. They went back in time too and made the ultimate sacrifice as well.
    Second, the psychic Evan went to see with his mother told him that he had no lifeline, he was never meant to be : this scene makes more sense with the director's cut ending.
    Eventually, Evan's brothers or sisters died before they born.
    We can hope a movie about them, it would be a good idea and a good movie. At least, better than the movie 2 and 3 which were terrible to watch.

    The directors cut is the true end, like it or not. Plus it implies that the stillborns before him also did the same and the child born after will also do the same. It matches the overall darker tone of the film too so having a happy ending makes no sense and feels like a cop out

    I never saw the Directors Cut Ending before, but as I saw it, my eyes were filled up with tears. The first ending was the one I've known and I thought, that one was dramatic but also impressing, because it showed that he learned from his mistakes and that he has another life now. But the Directors Cut Ending is much more dramatic and tragic. Especially the fact that his mother already lost 3 Babys before made me cry, because every unborn baby could have hsd the same problems as Evan had and decided to kill himself. I'm very confused right now and I don't know what to say.

Plus I figure Evan was pretty sick of life by that point, keep in mind he was around 20 years old but lived though several different timelines, retaining memories of all lives lived. I'm sure the ones where he had no arms or was butt-raped in prison didn't exactly leave a pleasant taste in his mouth, or anus. lol

    • @OldDood

      Not only possible but from what I understand about 'Parallel Realities/Timelines' that ALL of these outcomes can and will happen.
      Since there are unlimited 'Realities' then there is an unlimited amount of outcomes....
      If you can 'Think It' then it happens. We create our own realities.
      Time is NOT linear. Time is the Eternal Now.
      Linear Time is a 3rd Dimensional Construct.
      Everything happens at the 'Same Time'.
      Because we are all Quantum Beings and we are so much MORE than the 3D Vehicles (Bodies) that we reside within....

    I'm another who saw the theatrical ending when it came out and have just seen the director's cut. It took me a bit by surprise as I didn't know there were alternate endings. I thought the theatrical ending was stronger. A concious move to save Kaley knowing he would never get to know the love of his life. A baby strangling itself in the womb is a bit far-fetched (even for a sci-fi movie).

    • @neogeo8705
      @neogeo8705 6 лет назад +6

      Well it wasn't the baby's mind controlling that action though of course, it was adult Evan's mind behind the wheel just the same as it was when he took over other younger version's of himself. From that perspective it isn't far-fetched as it is in line with his ability.

  • @iso9953
    @iso9953 8 лет назад +150

    The director's cut ending is the only one that makes sense in the story line. In the end, Evan realized a few things:
    1. His time travelling to change the past can and will have unexpected consequences.
    2. The root of the series of events ruining everyone's life is with Kayleigh's desire to stay with Evan and therefore not moving in with her mother.
    4. Every time he tries to perfect everyone's life, he messes up. This accumulates in the penultimate timeline where he accidentally kills Kayleigh with the dynamite as he tries to prevent all the events from occurring.
    3. He remembered the psychic and his talk with his father.
    All the other endings neglect everything but point #2. For example: What if Kayleigh eventually got over the insult and ended up being Evan's friend anyways? What if the insult emotionally damaged Kayleigh in some way? What if, instead of Kayleigh/Tommy, some other kid ended up befriending Evan and suffering from his curse? What if Evan has kids eventually, giving them the curse? Evan, just like his father in the mental hospital, realized that the only way to prevent anything from going wrong was to completely remove himself from the situation and end his life.
    Sure, many people don't like tragedy and prefer a story line dominated by sorrow to end happily. But to do so would completely contradict the philosophy of this movie, and it simply would not make sense with the character and story of Evan. After everything he went through, to try to meddle with other people's lives again would not have even crossed his mind. Just like he wanted to remove himself from everyone's life in the bathtub suicide scene when they were all happy in life, the only fix he would have been able to see would be to have never lived at all.

But being brought up by her mother with support and real love, they all grew up with good heads on their shoulders and made better choices. While I do think the theatrical ending made the most sense out of all of them, I do think they could have made it if they just met as well-adjusted, successful adults.

    What a lot of people are forgetting about the Director’s cut is that he was on the brink of time and it was his last change to save Kayleigh. If the birthing video was the first one to come up, he would have had to choose that one since he had no time to choose another. So maybe he didn’t kill himself thinking everybody would be better off, maybe he did it as it was the only thing he could do to save Kayleigh.

    Part of me was expecting there to be a version where they meet each other in the crowd, she looks at him, and she tells him . . .
    That she doesn't like him and if he ever comes near her again, she'll target him and everyone he loves . . . :3

    Crazy story here, but I watched this movie for the first time when I was 10. I remembered little parts about it like when Evan made himself look like Jesus by stabbing his hands, and the mailbox blowing up. But I only just now found out what the movie was called. I watched it last night, and I have to say it was the most nostalgic experience of my life, lol. Great movie

    The Directors Cut makes NO SENSE! First off it sends a message that killing yourself will make the lives of people around you much better. There are people who truly feel that way. It also says suicide is okay. Evan wasn't a quitter. Second the big thing Evan was trying to accomplish this whole movie was making EVERYONE he loved happy. That was his issue because he would go back in time and make one person happy, but another person would be left with a shitty ending causing him to continuously try to fix things. If he was a stillborn that would've destroyed his mom and she would've been a mess, maybe she would've started smoking and possibly get lung cancer like she did in one of his time travel episodes? With the Theatrical version. he makes everyones lives happier in a realistic way, but still has to deal with not being with Kayleigh which is difficult. Its the most realistic ending to the story in my opinion

      I know your post is 9 years old, but I just want to say that the most "Realistic" ending really is the Directors cut. As long as he exists, he and Kayleigh can get back together. Remember that child version of Evan has no idea the intentions of Adult Evan. In "Reality" what he did at the birthday can be explained away by the blackouts and he can make up with Kayleigh.
      However.... if he dies... he can't ever see her again.
      Just saying.

    I remember my dad buying this when it first came out on dvd and we watched the directors cut I think I was around 9-10 and I remember thinking the ending was really sad but my dad explained it was the only way everyone turned out ok and it made me feel a bit better I still like the directors cut ending but the other endings would’ve probably been easier to watch as a kid lol

    Never knew this movie had multiple endings. I saw the director's cut one (when he chokes himself in the womb). The most tragic yet the one who makes most sense to me.
