honestly? one of the best ways to understand lana as a PERSON is through her poetry book. she has spelling mistakes, she literally uses emojis, and a lot of people hate that but it just feels so straight up genuine that i can’t help but be charmed by it!

I love all of these interpretations and I think they're all valid !!
The interpretation through the lens of alcohol is especially relevant considering the title of this song is "Cruel World". Lana said she started drinking primarily to escape from her death anxieties... from a cruel world some would say. And choosing the angle of a romantic relationship to talk about her addiction with alcohol makes so much sense since Lana said in an interview "When I write about the thing that I've lost I feel like I'm writing about alcohol because that was the first love of my life"
Also the fame lens is very interesting especially with the line "that's all over now" cause after Born to Die, Lana said she didn't want to release another album cause she felt she had said everything she wanted to say. The fame interpretation is definitely something to keep in mind once you get to Honeymoon !
    Sorry for this rant 🙈😅

Me too!! I think I’m going to get SO much more out of it. And honestly, I really don’t remember much so it’ll be fresh still for me. 🖤

You simply get it. Stellar video.
I remember hearing an interview where she confirmed the song was about addiction, I think. She said something along the lines that she often writes about things in an intimate way that makes people assume she’s talking about a partner, but that song was about her relationship with her first love, alcohol. I could be mistaken

What amazes me the most is thatyou can catch all these interpretations from a few listening. For years, i was pretty sure this apng was about fame and how she was done with it. It was only like a couple of years ago I realised this could be about alcohol. Lana is a genius, but you too. ❤️❤️

Also, sometimes these songs should be taken with context of her career and/or her life. unfortunately she’s been very private until the last album, but it’s still fun theorizing! like i’ve mentioned before Lana is sober and has been since 14. you could look it up. but if anything, i think that adds more intrigue regarding her lyrics about drinking or being drunk. It’s like the drinks and drugs she sings about is more about other people. The cult leader thing has been confirmed by her to be real, she’s lived so many lives honestly.
