WILL IT RUN?? 1959 Chevy Biscayne Sitting for 20 Years in a Kansas Lean-to! LOCKED UP Engine!

- Опубликовано: 7 сен 2024
- I picked up this 1959 Chevy Biscayne about 2 months ago out of a lean-to barn in southern Kansas, where it had sat for about 20 years. the car is a one owner, original paint, and very solid for its age. This chevy had a locked up 6cyl engine at the time, so in this video we will work on getting the motor to run again and take it for its first drive after sitting idle for two decades!
Thanks for watching!

Cool. If only for a moment. If the cameras weren't rolling , it would have started right up . Cool car. Love the 64, too
lol thats usually how it goes
Mr. B. Here ! Ryan most guys forget replacements of OEM parts is last thing you ( rebuild OEM parts ) these vehicle were built to be Service & cheaper ! That was I was trained GM Training ! Best of luck !
Awesome work bench you got there Ryan.
hah thanks man
Patients and perseverance for the win! I'd clean her up and fix what needs fixed for it to be a safe driver. Sounds like the exhaust valve that was leaking sealed up. I bet if you recheck the compression it would be lots better now.
KUDOS to you, sir, for the very slick turning tool!! There's no denying experience went into the creation of that one! I may have to make some of those myself(6cyl/v8, other GM brands).
@@jamesthompson8008 thank you, there's build video for that tool on my channel if you're interested.
So true Raycr
How many patients help you get it started?
@@craigwalker4211 All of them! lol
She runs pretty good actually for being dormant so long, AND just want to say that too is a benefit of soaking cylinders for a while.
No major ticks or knocks, sounds like it'll be fine.
Glad to hear you call this one a keeper, Ryan!
oh yeah, check back next week for another update!
As an old time mechanic I can tell you all you had to do was to replace the bendix on the starter to give you a constant crank. I can really help you getting these 50's, 60's and 70's started. I'd be glad to help you. From setting the timing, replacing timing chains, re-doing the carburetor and overhauling the engine I am the man. Been doing it for 50 years. Glad to help before I die.
Just an opinion on this wonderful old 59; I would leave it exactly as it is. It's such a good example. If the engine was bad, then I might feel differently. There is one thing that you might consider though, there are some cool performance parts for 235s. You could make it a sleeper 6. Sure, it wouldn't be as fast as an LS but everybody puts LSs in everything, that's nothing eye-opening in my opinion. You get the wide eyes when you see and hear somebody take off with a six-cylinder like a bat out of you-know-where. That's such a cool car. Keep up the good work Ryan you're doing great.
Cool old 59 you are the most persistent person I know. Most people would have given up at oh it’s locked up. 😊
When I was a mere stripling residing in Brooklyn, my grandparents had this car, same straight 6, only theirs was light blue
brooklyn woulda been cool to see back in the day
The motor seemed to have little to no blowby when it started & didn’t seem to smoke either which is a good start.
I’d complete a full tune up including setting point dwell, timing ,adjust valves, rebuild carb & change oil (use high zinc oil for ft cam) & new oil & fuel filter too.
Also change trans filter & fluid along with coolant & t-stat and may need a new rad too.
Go thru brake system & install new or good used tires
Then clean & detail the car best as possible & have fun taking it to car cruises or sell it.
But don’t trash this running 1 owner piece of automotive history by resto modding it.
That's a really rare car. A gold Biscayne with a automatic that survived
good job i have a 59 Biscayne 235 poweglide I am in the same boat as you long time storage. it had a clicking noise and miss running found a bent push rod. so ordering one now. keep the videos coming.
Thanks,
Everybody uses sandpaper but you should really be using a metal file. Sand is an insulator and small sand particles cam be lodged in the contacts causing problems.
Wayta go ! Jus clean er up, and move it on !Send it. Get the next one !
Good to see the 1959 Biscayne again ! Please be nice to Ryan and start Biscayne !
Ryan doubles as Frankenstein's monster in this vid, shocking himself to be alive :)
Poor water pump has lots of artery clogging.
Glad that it decided to cooperate in the end.
That solid Gothic Gold is really stunning! I admire your dedication in trying to revive that dead engine--and then succeeding! 😀Your video had special meaning to me b/c I have the same car, except in Cameo Coral. I just had the roof & trunk painted Satin Beige, so now the car looks just like the two-tone model in the brochure! I have the same 6 cyl. w/Powerglide. This powertrain rivals the Cadillac in quiet and smoothess!
Hey Ryan, I know is is a common reflex, but there is no reason to pump the throttle when there is no fuel in the carburetor bowl. Second, for a first start, use something more combustible than gasoline, like starting fluid.
love the LS idea and lowered. I am doing a 64 4 door
Good job! Patience pays.
Best way I learned to start up a old engine.
Was a pull start.
Even some Ford Automatic s would start with a pull.
Unbelievable. But old skool here😅
Pulling the old iron powerglide cars works too. It just takes two drivers, I don't think Felix is up to it yet
@@Raycr i did not know this about the glides
@@IowaClassicCars even the early aluminum one you could. Up till 67 or 68 I think
Ryan you got that 235 going and it sounds good I would just leave it in there and get the rest of the stuff fixed on that old girl and enjoy it.
Leave it stock! Those Chevy straight sixes were excellent engines, and smooth running too. Wherever you live, that is absolutely beautiful property!!
i will! thanks man, took a long time to save for it
I like the old 6 cylinder engines so my thoughts are to keep it stock. The car in my opion, is already low, so I wouldn't touch the ride height, just stiffen it up for corning and such.
Nothing is more frustrating then when a starter kicks out the second the car is going to start.
amen to that!
It's lots work what you do
So good work
To many LS swapped let her be how she left the factory and so what it's not a tire scorcher but it will be a nice driver, the body can be fixed up nice and be a sweet cruiser. Thanks Ryan
It's alive!🤗
no spark at points that are clean and adjusted with a good coil and lead, my thoughts are , change the condensor
Cool car! I think you absolutely should leave it original.
Looking forward to next video 😊
Ryan dont put a Ls in it,,put small block in if you want a V8,,,a nice set of crager ss wheels,,,you have a nice car there.,,,clean it up and make a nice driver, ,im old school,,,thats my thoughts about it.. you have a nice collection there keep them as close to original as possible
@@artjones2498 i would never do that :D
check back next week!
Vapor lock only happens when gas is percolating in carb as a result of heat.
ah i see!
Nice can’t wait for the next one 😊
Great vid!!!!! 👍👍
thanks!
Starter keeps kicking out because the engine is firing. That's in the design of the starter
That 59 is cool I just polish it up what about inch-and-a-half 2in white walls on it with original hubcaps
Hell Ya. another winner. Someone is gonna get a lot of smiles outta this one😀
for sure!
Nice Save Ryan Nice car
Keep it stock an put 2 cups of washing soda in rad an run for 30 mins than flush dont do it if you have alloy parts as it eats it an it works better than store bought flush
I'd put a v8 engine in it nice looking car keep up the good work we love them old antique automobiles
Excellent video Ryan :) also hope get fix up to and plus fix Key ignition too !
im trying to fix that as we speak!
@@IowaClassicCars excellent Ryan and I know could to !
Cool thanks 👍👍👍😊
Fix what's wrong and drive it. Great video
You know who needs one of those engine turning tools, give you a hint: he has a dog named Duff.
Don't forget to lube the rub block on the points
ah good call
Love that car! Love that 235! I’d clean it up but good and drive that thing!!
thanks man!
I have seen more new condensors go bad and when they sit for lengthy times they fail. The radio condensor hooked to the coil to stave off radio interference go bad and can mimic ignition break up to and no spark. All you have to do is disconnect it to run the car.
I think you should get her running well and just clean her up as a daily driver / survivor
I like your old school ways 😊
thanks man
Cool car
When I start an engine that hasn't run in a long time and the valve cover has been removed, I always drizzle oil on the tappets and down the pushrods. I don't know if that is necessary, but I like everything lubed before too much rotation of the cam.
cant be too careful!
The problem with the starter is the starter drive. You might be able to get it work properly by oiling the starter drive. This is just for future reference in case you run into this again, since you already have a new starter on the way. It won't always work, but most of the time it does. Also, it's not hard to change out the starter drive.
Leave the car stock. By the way, does your friend sell those engine turning tools? I could sure use one. I have some stuck six cylinders that I need to free up.
ah i see, but yeah for $60 bucks a new one replaces all those worn components
On the 64, why don't you just change to thermostat housing to the older style and use the correct molded hose? The starter on my 348 bolts on exactly the same way as that six, most likely it's the same starter that the Chevy V8 manual's used......
the hose was like 10 bucks actually, so i just went that route :D
@@IowaClassicCars I think you installed that flex hose just for Mortske...... lol.
Leave it stock and enjoy it- don’t put an LS in that car. It is too cool for that!
I wondered why you did not wash the engine compartment when you did the exterior. Please leave it stock.
All the marvel oil is what is causing it to not start.
I'd drive her the way she is and blare some late 50s music in her
Hi Ryan. Everyone wants a V8, (including me) how rare are poverty pack cars over there ? Maybe do it up as how it came from the factory, as It may well be one of a few.
pretty rare to find one totally bare of options
Hey Ryan, how much for the 59 you rescued from a field in Kansas about a month ago?
Should have put some ATF down the bores before turning it over,,After 20 years everything is bone dry,,If there's no domage to the rings or cylinder walls,,There is now,,
I did put oil down it.....I put marvel mystery oil......
Bore out the block to the max
I’d demo derby it
lmao no you wouldnt
I would just leave it stock, but have some bodywork done on the passenger side. Get rid of that dent in the back. Other than that, I would leave it.
Thats the buyers plan!
We know its the front half of the starter because of the way that it is.
Some people who watch these videos have 0 car experience, i try to keep it as simple as possible
@@IowaClassicCars Just a Mortskism for ya!
has weak bendix in starter, field winding corroded, pulling too many amps, dragging ignition voltage down, hook up a boost start charger
One mouse house been chewed up!!!!
Stock no lowering.
absolutely
Make it stock driver!
Stock...?
Give it the gas
which engine is this?
If I may ad something here just to make your videos a little more interesting instead of saying I bought parts from rockauto and the parts are put on with no video, it's all trial and error, show it, that's part of bringing it to life. If I had the starter out, I would have shown cleaning and lubeing it, possibly replacing the brushes. That's all there is to it. Just saying
i get that, the problem is, i buy & sell, i dont make my living from youtube. SO, to make my life easier, i put new parts on to help it run better / smoother/ as well as then i can advertise my cars that I have actually done the work to replace old parts vs just got an old car to run again. It helps resale as many people arent that savvy, they just want to get in & drive
My higb school car. How much? Restore
Email me please
Put a 409 and stock hubb caps Coil overs
now thatd be cool lol
Leave it stock.clean it from top to bottom .
You have to leave it stock.
You won't like this suggestion. Find a Chevy Bolt and swap in the electric bits. EV West or ICON could give you some tips. Electrification is one way to keep these olde beauties on the road!
V8 no ls fix up
The poor thing is so loaded with oil so use some ether..
good call, i didnt ever think of that tbh
Get it running good and sell it and put the money into a 2 door hardtop.
the 2dr ht will be this fall's project, make sure to stay tuned :)
Leave it stock
Le ve itstock
A 1959 biskit car lol
Battery is to weak
I lost a small bit of respect for you when you said LS. Don't, please . Put caps on it, back window in it, and enjoy.
I didnt say i woul do that, i just asked the question
Not worth it.
By the looks of this.
You will throw it away and install a LS engine or crate..
Just wanted to let you know your future
Not at all
@@IowaClassicCars nice 👌
Original Is the best.
Just makes sense.
don't waste a min or a single cent on a six cylinder
Man youre negative
Sounds like idiot talk!
Many people do that.
Its a ego thing or something similar
🤷♀️
Leave it stock
i plan to!
