As a Tesla Model 3 Performance owner who will probably never see a track day that was not only a very informative video but an enjoyable one as well. I learned a lot. Thank you for working with Tesla Mr. Pobst. I feel Tesla is extremely fortunate to be able to use your professional racing input to fine tune the Tesla Race Mode characteristics.

Regeneration sounds like it's acting like a retarder on a truck or bus. It makes sense to utilise it as much as possible to save the brakes.
The balance point for the anti-roll (sway)bars is a nice touch. Too hard and you can get a wheel in the air; not enough and you leaning over like a boat. From what I have seen and Randy's feedback sound pretty dialed in. I'm looking forward to see what developments come next.

I drive a standard (not performance) model 3 and I've been learning how to deal with the extra-strong regen braking too. As was said in the video, I've had to learn that "coasting" isn't coming all the way of the "gas," but rather coming part of the way off. Like the guy said, as you come off the accelerator, when you stop part way off, you get "coasting" and then when you keep coming off, you get braking. The other way of doing it is to wait longer than you would if you were driving an ICE car before you come off the accelerator. In both cases, you get less regen than you would otherwise, and it makes me wonder about the effect it has on the whole regen system. In the first case, if you watch the regen status bar in the display, you're getting less regen when you only come part way off the accelerator than you would if you were all the way off. In the second case, you are staying on the accelerator longer before you take it off, so you're not getting regen for as long as you would if you came off it earlier.

Thanks for the video, I loved getting inside of Randy's brain, but the backgound music added nothing. It just made it harder to hear and concentrate on what he and the questioners were saying.
I would like to hear some two footed drivers' tips for driving heavy regen vehicles. Randy was admittedly an Old School driver who doesn't use the technique much, but it seems perfectly suited for Teslas. The amount of control you lose by not being able to coast before/after braking, or transitioning to the brake pedal causes me more problems in a Tesla. I use the energy graph in my wife's Model S to perfectly feather the regen in corners. I'm getting my SR Model 3 this weekend, so I'm curious if the energy graph in a 3 is in a location that's conducive to keeping an eye on it in a turn.
I would hope that Tesla allows even SR 3s some "track mode" traction control overrides just for safety on gravel roads. Here in rural Arkansas it's not uncomon for a significant portion of your driving to be on gravel and dirt roads, so much so that even grandmothers are adept at sliding the rear out, because you have to when you meet a car coming from the opposite direction in a curve. NOBODY drives on the right side of a gravel road unless a car is coming. You drive straddling the crown until you see somebody coming (often with 0.1second's notice). Without the ability to jerk right and slip your rear end out you'll follow the road cant right into the ditch.

So much performance and Tesla is just getting started. Racing and vehicle performance will start running through a series of substantial improvements. There are so many limits that are now pushed to so much higher levels. Antilock brakes and traction control were revolutionary when they came out 15-20 yrs ago. Now we will get these at an accelerated pace, new technologies getting introduced every 2-3 years.
The next revolutionary tech is ultra capacitors. They'll enable more control of the braking and raise the rate of Regen, perhaps even to levels of the output. I'm sure some prototype systems are being tested for the new Roadster.
I found POBST's comment on staggered tires (275 on rear, 235 on front) only helps it look better. I have the same impression that the 235s look so skinny, BMW M3s look so sweet with stuffed and flared wheel wells. That was what was so enticing about the Plaid, the wider tires and flares make the car look so much more aggressive.

Electric motors do not have 100% torque at 0 RPM. It is pretty good, but there is a torque curve. It's just a lot flatter than a gas engine, but it's not perfectly flat.

@@keileung5567 Stats so far for Taycan have been disappointing, but Porsche is using the wrong tesla to compare it against. Their baseline is the Model S, which was never really much of a track car, and doesn't really accurately reflect the current generation of Teslas powertrain. The model 3 is (thus far) faster, and also is not power limited for track use. I would expect the metrics porsche has been claiming for the model 3 aren't really an issue either. I have yet to see a model 3 overheat from doing repeated drag races. The biggest model 3 issue has been brakes, not battery temps with track use, and that can be handled with some minor track focused upgrades. Keep in mind also, that they could build the Taycan body out of Carbon fiber, and it would likely still outweigh a model 3 by a lot. It has a 90 kWh battery compared to the model 3's 75 kWh, and because Porsche likely has less energy density than Tesla on top of that, it means a much physically larger and less thermally efficient package, which also means that they must also have much more cooling, which is more weight, and more lost efficiency. I think the Model 3 Performance will still crush a Taycan on the track, but we will just have to wait and see. Comparing the Taycan to the model S is going to leave a lot of Taycan customers confused, and disappointed as soon as they compare the car to a Performance 3 I think. Traditional Auto is getting spanked out there.

@@dreiak thought the model 3 will go into 90% mode or something after a couple of laps on track. model S was never designed for track use, cant even do autobahn properly but then model 3 wasnt avail for porsche to compare. then again german is famous for their over engineering. shouldnt have long to wait to see the taycan in action. exciting times ahead...

Welcome to the tablet generation, where bomber cockpit knobs are tacky and obsolete, old uncle Bob's technology back when Atari was all the craze in home entertainment, or even earlier.
It's a car for a newer generation that grew up using tablets instead of rotary phones, so their comfort is in screen swipes rather than flipping an array of switches on and off.
You cater to your market in order to succeed, and this is a new company for a new generation of drivers, like many of those in this video.

@@quangsomit2490 Beauty is subjective, it is defined by its generation's tastes and sensibilities.
As for "cheap" I assume you mean the unified approach of the modern cabin, a product of silicon valley thinking. That's the direction things are headed, kinda like what happened to cellphones after the iPhone came out.
It's a massive design advantage in the age of silicon and AI, having a single "supercomputer" in place of 80 disorganized systems connected together by wire like Christmas lights.
I don't think you understand or appreciate how big of a deal this design approach is, but it's a game changer from the software side of things to us who live and breath technology.

    • @quangsomit2490
      @quangsomit2490 5 лет назад

@@AllanSustainabilityFanIt is true that beauty is subjective. But in this case there is not much subjective thinking involved. All the reasons you stated are all hilarious. It is great because it is silicon valley thinking?!! So if Silicon valley draw you a piece of turd it is also a beauty? supercomputer? AI? none of those Techs are in the model 3. The model 3 has a freaking tablet bolted to the center of the dash as a cost cutting measure. It can control functions of the car with the touch screen that make you think it is so cool and better then lever and switches, but look over to the left and what do you see? Window switches just like any other $15000 car. The track balls on the steering wheel should reminds you of 1980 arcade games track balls; maybe you should remove those from your model 3 if you have on, lol. I sure don't appreciate that design approach, it looks like a golf cart. Now I sure don't know how you can look at a properly design instrument display and think it is Christmas lights. Are you alright?
