I like how this lady does it right "only cut loose skin" and don't cut too close to nail bed. I worked at a salon that wanted my to cut culicles off as well as skin around the nail x.x it was horrible. This video is very informative and gentle on the client
I just want to let everyone know, that your cuticle is indeed dead skin. That's why is greyish. Also it's fine to cut the cuticle. Just NOT the LIVING skin around it. (Eponychium) I do have to mention... The woman in this video did not correctly cut the cuticles. You are not to pull when you're using nippers. It can cause tearing and infections.
Your not supposed to pull away when cutting the cuticle with the nippers because if the nippers don't cut through all the cuticle it can rip.....😳your supposed to #1 place the nippers on the cuticle that needs to be cut away #2 pinch with the nippers #3 open the nippers #4 then lift the nippers and if there is still cuticle left repeat those steps
I am really curious if people even listened and watched the whole video before commenting "Cutting cuticles will lead to infections, don't do this!!" Int he video they clearly state to cut the excess skin around the cuticles as cutting the cuticles on the nail bed may lead to an infection. This comment section reminds me of that NPR april fools joke where people commented by just reading the title without actually checking out the content.
You don't have to bleed to have exposed skin after a cuticle cut. You really shouldn't go get them done unless you do your research and find a legitimately clean salon.
As I have said to many people she doesn't know what a cuticle is she cuts the Eponychium which is not meant to be cut, the cuticle is dead skin cells on top of the surface of the nail, not the skin at the top of the nail bed.
Cuticle and eponychium are not the same people. Eponychium is the nail fold you see while the cuticle is literally on the nails. If you do nails often you will see that when you push back the cuticle there's a thin layer of skin on the nail, that's the cuticle
You can get them at beauty shops, such as Sally's, and other makeup stores, such at the ones in the malls. You can get them really really cheap though on amazon, brand new too. Sometimes I find them in small nail care kits at CVS.
cuticle(translucent layer dead layer in between the skin/eponychium and nail plate that of and extends on to the nail plate... it holds oil and bacteria) eponychium(skin at the base of the nail) are two very different things. You should really specify... you push back the skin and remove or cut excess cuticle... without breaking this down this video is not enforcing proper maintenance and people who don't know will literally cut off their skin.. which you should never do because that opens the body up to infection.
Yes!!! Thank you! I'm a licensed manicurist and I try to tell clients the same thing! But everybody thinks the "cuticle" is what the eponychium actually is!
Yes!!! Thank you! I'm a licensed manicurist and I try to tell clients the same thing! But everybody thinks the "cuticle" is what the eponychium actually is!
If your doing this on clients. Do NOT touch the brush directly to them!!! Cross contamination!!! I recommend a dropper... Safety and sanitation is so important in this career
Actually, if you have never pushed/trimmed cuticles before or haven't done them in a long time they do form a thin layer of skin-like film extending beyond the base of the nail. It's not that noticeable but when you use something to push it you should feel some kind of resistance where the skin-film starts, whereas if you tried to use a cuticle pusher on a bare nail it would simply glide over it.
Ok so the word cuticle means dead tissue on the nail plate extending from the epinicium. The epinicium is the living skin around your finger nail. Lol people are funny.. she's not ripping your skin off! (This is coming from a licensed nail technician)
Wrong way to cut cuticles. Never tear it from skin. Gently follow a cuticle shape and cut it from a skin at the end of cuticle shape. But never tear it!!!
No I'm not stupid or 12. I just didn't know what I was doing the first time around. I have since learnt from my previous mistake and now my nails are fine. Your bad attitude however, needs work.
Try to push them very carefully and slowly. You'll get better with practice. My nails can bleed easily too so I always try to be careful, but sometimes I mess up :-/.
You're not suppose to cut your cuticles :( they prevent you from getting an infection. You're only suppose to scrape excess off the nail plate and trim hanging little bits not the actual skin like this lady. She even stated it may lead to infection. Ps I've been a nail tech for 7 years
I get hang-nails constantly and once I get a manicure (rare treat) they stop, because of cuticle removal. Thank you for sharing this so that I can do it myself. Hang-nails are painful and make my fingers look gross!
people, the loose skin that covers the post lunula nail area is UNNECESSARY skin growth, it is OK to cut it, as long as you don't damage the skin that cover the lunula itself, stop being so over caring, you don't get an infection so easily, unless you have an health condition already. jeez
It seems cutting the cuticle is a matter of preference. The WebMD site recommends that cuticles not be cut or removed in any way. Push the cuticle gently back and keep them moist. The dermatologists say that the cuticle serves a purpose to protect the nail matrix. Once the cuticle is removed, the area is "wide open" and anything can get in there. Keep in mind that myfatpocket stated that SHE preferred to cut her cuticles, not that WE should do it (I think). Hope this helps.
Is there a natural alternative to using acetone? Perhaps white vinegar, where the smell dissipates very quickly. For someone who does not have nail polish/varnish on, i dont see the necessity of using such a harsh chemical which strips the nail beds natural oil.
I can't believe the comments. Didn't your mother or grandmother teach you about personal grooming? It doesn't hurt to have the cuticles pushed back. It's very gentle. Try it now with the free edge of one of your own nails and slide it back. I teach all my clients to do this at home. Saves me and my clients more time at their next manicure appointment.
She squeezed client's fingers so hard and pushes all tools so unmercifully I can hear her client screaming!!! That's the reason for soft background music! 😂
oh my gosh, i have been debating whether or not to cut the cutical for ages now and i think i'm finally decided on not doing it, it looks disgusting! and what you said makes heaps of sense about germs getting in
My cuticles get compliments all the time becuz for some reason they don't grow all uneven or gross looking, but i still like this video :) it'll help me out completely while doing manicures for others :D
I do mine and my boyfriend cuticles all the time and I have yet to see any sign of trouble or infection. I can only surmise that those who have experienced any misfortune this way have either done (or had it done) wrong or have been using dirty tools. With proper care and consideration, cuticle removal is safe.
@homie8333 Haha! A simpel trick I do is soak hands, push damp cuticles back with towel, cut any excess cuticles and voila!. But that is a ruggard way to do it. Let do the pro way
It is excess skin that grows over the nail in effort to protect the matrix from bacteria the cuticle has two parts living and dead dead is what grows on your nail
Jade Nava-Reyna I know what it is my question is isn't it required? There's lot's of dead cells in and outside our bodies but we don't go round trying to removed them. Couldn't you just leave it alone? Or would that eat into the ethos and business model of hair and beauty?
ednuttah. i don't see think cuticle is the eponychium itself. it is the layer of dead skin between the nail plate and the eponychium. that's what I've known.
In my 5 years of being a nail tech, Ive never seen 1 customer get an infection from cutting the eponichium. Now, im not saying you should cut it, but even if you do, the chances of an infection is still pretty low despite what scientist say. Sometimes you have to cut the eponichium because you cannot get the polish on the cuticle line without it looking like a total mess. So you can trim eponichium, just don't over do it.
Question.. how do I use the cuticle nippers without hurting myself. The last time I received a manicure the manicurist used the nippers and the cuticles hurt for a day or so afterwards.
They just use cuticle remover which is safe. Then you push the cuticles back slowly. It just makes your nails look longer and nicer. Don't cut them, as in with your teeth and like chew at them, that's bad.
hey, im a man and i have problems with my cuticles, i usually get a scaple or a nail clipper and try cutting around the cuticle area. is this a good thing, it grows back and im fed up of it, it look horrible :( plz help
I had this damn splinter under my nail so i grabed a spoon bit it and conted to 3 and ripped the finger nail off it really really hurt but i got the splinter out now it has been 2 months and the nail is growing sideways is that bad?
ive never been to get my nails dont, i always wondered what a cuticle was!, my friend does finger nails and stuff, ive never feld the need to remove mine, at 3,24mins i think it was she says removing cuticles can cause infection, so push them back after a shower...she she admits the bugs can get in if you remove them, i always thought they kept your finger nails on!,
Well: cuticle is dead skin on the base of your nail!!! Eponychium (sorry if I spelled it wrong) is the live skin around your nails and should not be cut! Get it? Have a nice day!
People should not remove or alter their cuticles. They form a protective barrier in the crack between the skin and the nail, preventing potentially painful, long-lasting infections. They are a normal, healthy, inconspicuous part of the human body, and advocating removing them just gives people one more part of their appearance to obsess over. Cuticle removal is recommended by beauty "professionals" trying to convince people they need their services. We have these things for a reason!

It says that but she definitely cut more than loose skin. If it was truly loose, you wouldn't have to yank it with your nippers.
As I have said to many people she doesn't know what a cuticle is she cuts the Eponychium which is not meant to be cut, the cuticle is dead skin cells on top of the surface of the nail, not the skin at the top of the nail bed.
Nippers, or cuticle clipper is a bad idea for people who do not have steady hands. I learned that the hard way.
Pamela Kilponen I’m scared now. Whyy
I tried the oil first & it worked very nicely. Thank you.
Cuticle and eponychium are not the same people. Eponychium is the nail fold you see while the cuticle is literally on the nails. If you do nails often you will see that when you push back the cuticle there's a thin layer of skin on the nail, that's the cuticle
@iklop7 Try soaking your hands in warm water. it helps to soften the cuticle
@jellybelly1011 The cuticle oil is a natural oil which strengthens the nail base, softens the skin and prevents dryness x

Just out of interest isn't the Eponychium required? Why would the body have it if it's not useful? It's not similar to Appendix we do need them.
It is excess skin that grows over the nail in effort to protect the matrix from bacteria the cuticle has two parts living and dead dead is what grows on your nail
