- This video explores the basics of Guatemalan history and politics to explain why it is that Guatemala's history has been one of trauma and upheaval, why its moments of hope like the Guatemalan Revolution failed and why its democracy remains fragile. It begins with the Maya and Spanish colonization and ends with the disaster of the Jimmy Morales Presidency. It covers the decades of guerrilla warfare and the 1954 coup under Castillo Armas.
Amazing video! I'm traveling in Guatemala right now and am floored by how warm and welcoming its people are despite nearly a century of rulers who are almost all corrupt, with no care for their people
Lucky you Thomas. Guatemala is beautiful.
Awesome video. I feel like our country gets overlooked sometimes because we’re so small
Dude I’m in a trip in Guatemala rn and this is very educational thank you!
Thank you for covering a lot, clearly and accurately, in 20 minutes. I plan to watch other videos in the series. And I hope that the U.S. will shift from policies of empire that have helped enable corruption, exploitation and violence--supporting the return of CICIG would be a good start. The people of Guatemala have set an example of resistance, especially since 2015 and deserve better.
One detail: Former President Berger's heritage is French, not German, so his surname is pronounced [Bear ZHAY].
Thank you for that Helen. And Thank you for watching. I agree about CICIG as I think most Guatemalans do.
Man, Guatemala 🇬🇹 leaders have rarely been good for the people. Very heavy handed leadership against the best interests of the people. Very unfortunate. Leaders are at times extremely selfish
I beg to differ, most leaders are ALWAYS selfish, and currupt.

Gwaan real talk extremely true
Sadly, when their leaders tried to be good to the people, ironically, the US stepped in to prevent that from happening what caused social instability for many years to come, and the remnants are still felt today.
Do you have any books that were translated from Spanish to English about guatemalan politics after the Civil War. I'm tried of conservatives from Latin America saying that socialism ruined it when clearly in countries like guatemala, my people suffered from mostly conservative and fascist governments.
I don't have any translated ones, sorry. But the ones that Greg Grandin wrote, a professor at Yale, do make that point clearly, I think.
@ sweet, if you have any Spanish thag will be great too cause I'm practicing reading Spanish more to read more direct sources from Latin america
@@epiphonecasino5903 sure, send me your email and I will send them to you on pdf.
This was very educational and it gave me all the information I wanted to know. Thank you!
Thank you for the report. It was really good. Are you to be compress but a lot of information thank you
What sources did you use for information on this topic? I want to learn more about the country's history in-depth.
nice! definetly going to watch more of your episodes, thanks!
Thank you for this video. The information and presentation are excellent.
thank you for the kind words
The Guatemalan Map without is territory of Belice??. Is so rich and beautiful the United Kingdom of Guatemala established since 1609 and that extends from El Soconusco (today Chiapas) to part of Panama. Guatemala is 12th producer of silver in the world and 20th producer of gold besides having massive reserves of nickel, jade and so many other natural resources too bad for almost a century big foreign anglosaxon multinational corporations have been taking almost everything. Long live Juan Santamaria the heroe of Costa Rica who died in battle against the english pirates. The Malvinas belong to Argentina, The Esequibo belongs to Venezuela and Belice belongs to Guatemala. God bless
Hey, really enjoying your content so far man!! Very nice work:] I want to learn much more about Guatemala. So I was wondering, are there any resources you'd recommend (books, articles, etc.) ? I'm fluent in both english and spanish.
Absolutely, but you gotta give me something more specific as to what you're looking for. Any particular topic within Guatemala? General knowledge? about migration? About the war? I have a few I could send you.
@ I want to learn more about the civil war specifically. Although I'd also like to learn more about Guatemala in general.
@@all59w36 ok, for the war specifically, there's this great book about the time that Rios Montt was in office:
www.amazon.com/Terror-Land-Holy-Spirit-Guatemala/dp/0199844771/ref=sr_1_9?dchild=1&keywords=guatemala+politics&qid=1621430106&sr=8-9
I have pdfs for two others that I can send you that are more general. One is called the Guatemala Reader and the other is called the blood of guatemala: a history of race and nation. If you would like those, just give me an email I can send them to.
I agree. Congratulations to those who have taken the time to search and report all this information. Everything it says in detail is true. Unfortunately the Guatemalan population is unaware of all this because it is not convenient for the economic elite. :(
Great Channel Sir And The Information Is Outstanding Too.😇🌟🤗🙏🙏🙏🇨🇦🇮🇱♾️🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🗽🦅‼️
The information is not accurate in some areas like the one given about Cerezo and Serrano. The art is nice!
Hey, just a couple of suggestions. Your content was great, but at times the hand drawing so vigorously was a bit distracting. Also, if possible you may wish to invest in a clearer mic, or speak more clearly. Just minor things I experience, thanks for the informative video! 👍
Thank you, I appreciate the feedback.
@P4ouR 4 bro chill lol. Minor things as I said :P
¡Viva Guatemala!
What happened to General José María Orellana, the one that participated in the coup to oust President Herrera. Orellana made the Quezal equal the value to the dollar. Orellana was poisoned in Antigua, Guatemala with while he was attending a dinner with his mistress in 1926.
a lot of these ppl that make these videos are very selective with the history they choose to share. either out of white sympathy, or ignorance, either way, it's messed up to leave out that type of information.
Great video. The volume is too low though... I had the speaker all the way up and still missed some of the history.
i am moving to guatemala on wednesday. I am bringing my two cats with me. I already have an apartment i can not wait
Good luck on your move!
Great video man
Many times, historical facts, as one analyzes them, surprising connections are discovered. The illustrious Gabino Crispin Gainza Fernandez de Medrano was the last ruler of the Central American region, representing the King of Spain, Ferdinand VII. He declared independence of the Kingdom of Guatemala on September 15, 1821. He immedietly became the first Head of State of those young independent Central American republics (jefe politico).
Awesome video!
I can barely hear the audio
Great channel!
Thanks for the kind words and thank you for watching.
I watched this video because my girlfriend is from Guatemala and I wanted to no more about her home country
Very accurate!
I like the REAL face of the past presidents of Guatemala. Guatemalans should not follow this saying: NO - "sales de Guatemala y te metes a guatepeor" with the present congress.
What happened to garifuna people on the coast?
They still exist but are struggling to even keep their language alive it's very sad.
Can you do Reunion Island?
People have asked me to expand to Africa a few times. I will probably do that at some point, but that is a bit far from my expertise right now. So it's likely to take a while.
@ Muchas gracias Isla Reunión tiene muchas historias espero que no sea muy larga y además contarles que en el año 1550 a.C. los primeros habitantes fueron indonesios.
Cool, I'm susbsribing
My dad was born in the same city Justo Rufino Barrios (San Marcos) our last name is also Barrios .. i wonder if we're related 😂
Over half of it was modern politics instead of history but ok, I'll take it, thanks
The governments of the late 70s where the only ones who actually did something positive for the Guatemalan society specially under ERM, change my mind.
Amazing video. So sad the people of Guatemala have suffered under corrupt leadership.
We need bukele in guate
Wow, the woke is strong with this one...i live in El Salvador and let me tell you: the indigenous people are real knuckleheads
You'll hate this comment: the underlying problem with latin America is its Roman Catholic roots. They have no interest in government. And that's a legacy from having a pope.
But it is not just Catholics. Any country with a predominate religious character has this problem.
Frankly the best hope for Guatemala s people is to leave.
The main problem is the US decided to get involved and ruined the country.
Jajajajajajaja el latinoamerica solo estará en paz cuando 🇺🇸💀
Sure sorry the USA came in after centuries of corrupt and tyrannical rule-definitely only our fault huh
So true, i say it as a Centralamerican.
@@JohnSmith-li6mnas a Centralamerican i SOMEWHAT agree, the US influence has been disastrous to our region specially TO Nicaragua due to the canal (way before Sandinistas even came to power) that never came to be and to the world. HOWEVER, for the other C.A. countries it has been our elites the 1# problem, they were the ones who decided to give concessions to american big business and who continue until to day (not only to americans), while having high taxes and regulations for everyone else, resembling a socialist system, at the end the problem is local, luckily is not over for us, judging by the Salvadoran case.
This sounds very one sided.
Viva Guatemala la Conservadora!
Vive pero en el subdesarrollo lol
La conservadora tiene al país en subdesarrollo
The original banana republic sad!
We don’t want your opinion, just make an objective and informative video.
He was objective the entire video ??
only if you not aware of the entire history.@@blonsh3072
Corruption happens every country who do you think u are? a Smurf in utopia?
???
???
Decent video, but you're not being objective with the politics and are clearly biased.
Biased? How so?
