- In this video you are going to see another side of Guatemala which is off the beaten path.I took a crazy 7 hour long bus ride through the jungle of Guatemala.We went through so many isolated indigenous villages where the locals do not even speak Spanish nor have they become accustomed to foreigners. Then I took another small boat for 2 hours across a beautiful river to get to a place called Livingston and it is probably one of the most interesting places I am going to explore.

I met Phillip when I went to Livingston. He took me into the area where his people live, and we ate at a local restaurant in his neighborhood. What a fantastic experience that I will never forget. Thank you Tim for making these videos and reminding me of Guatemala.

It’s not really the language barrier. These people, like many isolated groups around the world, have (for centuries) passed down an oral tradition that outsiders were to be feared because they want to kill you, rape you, take over your village, convert you to their religion, etc. l

@@JohnDoe-ky2qd doubtful since L.A. is primarily a minority city. It's not like we white folks in El Lay have never seen an Hispanic person. They're hardly a novelty in these parts. We're surrounded by them. Barely notice them. But I doubt that this remote group in Guatemala have seen many or any white people.

Because Crete is overrun by tourists and many of the ones who go there are very noisy and bothersome party-crazy people.
The way you interact with people is outstanding Tim, the only youtuber I've seen who comes close is Mr Bald in my opinion.
I am surprised that you find strange that people in Guatemala do not speak Spanish, where Spanish is the oficial language, but you have to remember you are in Mayan Country, where there are several ethnic groups that speak their own language. You will find the same in the southern part of Mexico. There are villages in northern Guatemala and southern Mexico that they belong to the same ethnic groups and the interesting part is that they can go back and forth to the villages whether they are in Guatemala or Mexico. Guatemala is not the only country that neglect ethnic groups, Mexico does too.

Very interesting hearing the man talk about the Black Caribs in that region. Really enjoy hearing the local where you go talk about their lives and culture in your travels.
What is so funny to me you keep wanting to travel in the most dangerous places where even the locals say are dangerous, but then you're scared crazy about jumping off a low cliff into the water or in fast cars and boats. That's crazy man!
Interesting because Caribs were virtually wiped out in most of the Caribbean exceptions of Dominica 🇩🇲 on the reservation and I think one more island I’ve been to the reservation.
That guy is full of crap, those carribeans were the African slave that were left on islands just like Jamaican's. He's wrong about saying the Caribbeans were here before the Mayan's, the Mayan's are around 750 B.C. and the Olmecs over 1,600 B.C. There were no Europeans or African's in the America's during those times.
last time I visited Livingstone I was 17 years old, it was the year 1978, during german high school summer holidays, Livingston then had not a single vehicle, not even a motorbike, since there was no road connection to the outside, only a once daily boat from Pto Barrios. It stroke you then as it does now, how different the vibe is from the rest of Guatemala

I love how you find these back roads and small villages..I would love to take these roads on a bike (adventure motorcycle)! I'm like you..I'd rather check out the villages than the tourist spots...only way to experience the culture and people properly 😀. The Latino people are very kind and welcoming.. safe travels bro 👍✌😎
Mr. Timmy Karter, it's not that they hate tourists. I am a native myself and I am from Suriname. When you visit indigenous people, they will never come directly to you. Natives are generally very withdrawn and especially if they don't know you. That is in our nature and you see that in almost every other tribe.
They've seen what outsiders have done to their ancestors.
Thank for this comment I agree 100% my children are if Tzotzil (Chiapas)heritage and their language is Tzotzil, it is a same relation to the dialect spoken in the video. I speak Spanish also English and their dad's first language was Tzotzil.
Thank you for your nice comment. I find it very interesting about your origins and that of your children. I have always been interested in indigenous cultures because the core of our existence can always be found in every tribe. It is me and mother earth I don't speak Spanish myself because we actually speak Dutch and English here. Spain and Portugal could never conquer the "Guyana's" 💪🏼, the tribes here were too aggressive until the English and Dutch came with their "fire water" (Alcohol) which caused a lot of destruction.

@@reggaerasta4285 yes! This is so true! I love indigenous culture and native humor is always rising out at my house and we just start laughing together like a domino affect. I'm so happy you responded :) to be honest the RUclipsr who posted this video I was surprised at his shock of being guatemala and having people not speak Spanish. If he is an experienced traveler he should have known and taken more time to investigate slowly by asking questions to the appropriate people. Im actually kind of sad he didn't make a separate video about indigenous mayans or people in Guatemala, he just kind of skimped throught it and went on to the next tourist place.
This is also true that when my take my daughter to Mexico, her cousins do not speak any Spanish either nor her grandma, only hello, si and the rest is Tzotzil.
I always been fascinated about taino/arawak/carib culture as well, and I try to learn a much as I can through the People instead of reading an old history book written by a non-Native. I would love to learn about your culture as well. Here in Michigan my children and I attend powwows together and my son is wanting to learn fancy dancing. My roots are more castizo but I definitely more connected to Native culture. Thank you for the video, i would love to learn more.

It actually bothers me that he hadn't bothered to do more research. You can't just go into an area and then wonder why these special indigenous groups only speak Tzotzil/Mayan language and little to no Spanish.
I would immediately understand it from the knowledge that there are still indigenous groups that have little or no ties to the governments and want to preserve their own language and culture.Very nice that you are also interested in learning about the Taino/Arawak/Carib indigenous cultures. In my country, when we talk about indigenous groups, the Arawak and the Carib indigenous people are most represented. There are also other tribes such as the Wayana's and the Trio's, but they live deeper in the south of the Surinamese amazon rainforest where they have a more primitive existence (and maybe better too)
Actually, I'm like you, I like to learn wisdom and history from the indigenous groups themselves, because non-indigenous people are sometimes so superficial and I think a lot is lost with that. By the way, you talked about Mexico and that is a country that I must have seen at least once in my life. There is a reason for that and I will tell you why.
Six months ago I did a DNA test. The DNA test showed that I am approximately 40 percent Meso American and Andean, which means that my ancestors come from Mexico to Argentina Chile. I was stunned 😱. I asked my mother, are we Mayan or Carib natives?What's the real deal here?She told me that Grandma always taught her that her ancestors are Carib natives and these groups moved from the Caribbean to Venezuela/Guyana/Surinam and French Guyana.But the test showed that we have Inca/Mayan ancestors and DNA doesn't lie, so this is very confusing. There seems to be another DNA test that indicates more precisely where your ancestors come from because Meso American and Andes is a huge area.
Maybe this is an explanation why I am so attracted to the Mayan/Inca cultures hahaha🤭, I love their music, the clothes and the traditional things.But anyway, I grew up as a child in an indigenous village, so I inherited the values and norms of the Carib indigenous culture and in fact I love all indigenous cultures, no matter which one. I find them all very special and for to learn from. Also from your culture. Wow, I think those powwow festivals in the United States that you talked about are so beautiful. That is also something I would like to see sometime. The multi-coloredness and variation is enormous and impressive.
I did not know about garifuna in Guatemala. I met Mr. Flores in 2014/2015 and he took me to the Garifuna side of Livingston because I could not find anything garifuna. It was extremely hidden from all tourists and most of the main streets/shops are run by Mayan/Europeans/Americans. After walking through a maze of streets, i was able to find the Garifuna side of Livingston, which was amazing as it was located off the coast. Great people and was welcomed with open arms and met a couple of garifuna who were deported from NYC (my hometown). Great people and great food!

Livingston is not the only place with Garifuna, Afro-Caribbean. I visited Guatemala more than 20 years ago and went to Puerto Barrios. The population there was essentially 100 % Afro/Garifuna. Talked to locals there and they were pretty much considered outcasts just like the old man in this video said of people from Livingston. Very sad.

I am a close friend of timmy's from Athens. I am really worried about him, cause I can't reach him for 1 and a half week now, may god be with him.
I read that the last place he was isn't so dangerous, however that part of Latin America is very dangerous. Most possible he got robbed and they took all his equipment and camera. But in that case wouldn't he give us an update from someone else phone? Perhaps he was locked from his youtube channel but since you said you can't reach him this is not the case. Only way is someone calls Guatemala authorities for a missing person. I hope he wasn't stabbed or food poisoned because there are not even roads to that island to get help from hospital.

You are right! Remember that at least these people arent slaves to excessive consumerism, debt, mortgages, credit scores, etc., which are all inventions of the so-called civilized world, inventions that have no inherent existence and where kids are glued to their mobile phones all day and everyday. These people happen to have stronger social bonds and close-knit communities, something that is vanishing in the western world. Notice how these kids probably dont have to pop a pill for just about everything…

The guy in the village was saying people there work in cardamon plantations "for perfumes and food".

When I went to Guatemala many years ago, I was warned by a lot of people not to go into the mountains.
There’s no danger there
The only reason is because its so uninhabited when you get into the jungle, there's dangers of animals, land slides, getting lost. People have no idea how unbelievable huge wild jungles are.

I just want to clarify the Caribes where indeed from Africa what he said was incorrect they are indeginous people to the land but stating he isn't African is incorrect but anyhow great video Garifuna people come from west africa. The original Garifuna come from SVG 🇻🇨 they fled to countries like belize and other south American states. The Garifuna people one the biggest Caribbean nations in the world 💛🖤🤍 but he is informative and love how the rasta spreads information.
