FYI: k.u.k. actually isn't a name, but more of a description - "kaiserliche und königliche Hofbäckerei" means they used to deliver to the emperor's court in ye olden days. Mostly a good sign that you'll get a certain level of quality.
So like a Royal Seal of Approval?
@@gbt722 maybe back in the day but nowadays anyone can slap K. u. K. On their business. So only trust it if it was founded before 1918.
@@gbt722 yeah that fits perfect
Janek and Honza would know it as C.k., Císařský a královský.
You really got the essence of Linz right.
Only thing I would add is Stahlwelten, an exhibition of the biggest metal plant in Austria, since Linz is essentially an industrial city and not really a tourist destination.
You guys were definitely like "can we get the week off to go holiday to Linz"
Boss:"no of course not"
Honza"oh ok then..... In other news were going to Linz to do a video"
We don’t have a “boss”. You guys are our bosses ;)
Janek is the boss!!
I have lived in Linz for 7 years and this video brought back a lot of memories. Maybe I should go and film some kind of a best things to do in Linz from an ex-local point of view. Awesome place!
Do it, just do it
From what I understand, Linz was once a garrison town and that also they regard their taste for classical music, especially that of Strauss, most seriously!
@@vincentperratore4395 I would say classical music is still rather popular all over Austria and Linz is no exception, there is the Brucknerhaus and the Musiktheater that do classical music and there also is a university for singing and dancing etc.
share your contact i want to know more about Linz.Thank you
But please do some of best things and don't answer the question to why this country doesn't like tourists
As someone who grew up in Linz, I was initially shocked about the clickbaity title, but I think you showed the city from its nicest side. Thank you very much for that!
Its actually crazy to see you walking through streets i cross every day. Nice video, glad you liked Linz!
ok, say now, that Buffet Helga restaurant , is it really about a buffet???
@@irondasgr hahahaha
Same, watching this video was a wild experience
3:40 if it's like french laws, they might be able to put ads on a public building when it's being restored (we can see some scaffoldings on the cathedral here) as long as the ads are financing for the work on the building itself..... so it's pretty clever....
Prague does that too, plus there are rules that 80% of the ad must portray the building that's being restored. It's a good idea.
@@JudyCZ yeah but the weird thing is, in Linz it is an ecclesiastical building - cathedral. In Prague ads portrayed for example reconstruction of the National Theatre or Museum
It's now a Novas Ordo church in any case, under the diabolical control of the Vatican II heretical sect, and as it is no longer Catholic, they'd not be remiss in placing ads for le folie bergere!
I'm not at all religious but to be honest I find banks advertising on churches offensive...Jesus only got angry once in the bible....in the temple where he overturned the money lender's tables...it's hugely ignorant and disrespectful and I am surprised both parties aren't embarrassed.
@@richardclowes7428 Lol
Hitler spent most of his youth in the Linz area, from 1898 until 1907. He lived on on the Humboldtstrasse. Not that any of that should reflect on the town or its people, it is just a curious footnote about the city.
Kind of irrelevant? 🤔
Linz looking like Prague; that everyone decided: what if we cleaned our city!
We actually spent 2 days of our Austria trip in Linz, and it was a great choice. Would definitely recommend it to anyone who's visiting Austria, especially since it's in the middle of the train ride between Vienna and Salzburg anyway.
I personally loved the quick zoo mention. And the train ride if your bringing your kids. I have now added this place to my bucket list. It's super refreshing to see a great clean friendly place that is not swarming with tourists.
i actually grew up in and around linz so it's pretty normal for me to hear someone say they went there and had a good time.
it's pretty impressive how well you seem to know the city, be it through research or experience.
i've been living here for about 30 years and couldn't really have added anything major that would be worth doing in just a few days of a visit.
except maybe Big Joe's Falafel, but i'm sure you heard of them at least.
"we dont really want tourismn" - "lets do a tourist guide with these two czechs, they will roast out city to the ground so no one will come ever again!"
....
"Damned..."
Oh don't worrythe tourism board does a pretry good job of roasting the city, they released a video saying Linz is a bit racist, Linz is a bit boring etc.
I was very thrown off by the title of this video. I had initially thought that there would be a large hostility to foreigners coming to this city but after watching its entirety it sounds very open for exploration and not so closed off.
The most hilarious thing was at the end - german speaking with thick czech pronunciation how lovely is this - I am amazed - thank you Honza :-)
Thanks for the tips. Linz Is actually on my travel list. When I lived in Vienna, I came up with a plán to visit all of the provincial capitals in Austria, but so far I've only managed Vienna, Eisenstadt, Graz, and Salzburg.
"Czech guy teaching you German in Astria. How about that?" - its about creativity and education.
Franz Joseph approves :)
Teaching in English
Prost!
I knew he is a NON-native English speaker; I guessed it right
I guess a Czech Guy teaching German in Austria is better than a German guy teaching German in Austria.
Overall the Czech pronounciation and to a small degree the vocabulary/loanwords should be closer to Austrian German and Czech people mostly learn Austrian German rather than Federal German in their schools.
Splendid! I would love to go and visit definitely stay in Linz
Classic Austria: we don’t want tourists.
I do agree in Barcelona we don't want tourists. Explorers? Okay. Tourists? No please. No more. Tourism is killing our living.
@@danigonzalez4299 I totally agree with you. I hope less tourists go to Barcelona. I myself, dislike Barcelona because it’s boring and dirty so I won’t be going back to Barcelona any time again so I’ll be one tourist less :)
@@danigonzalez4299 Didn't people from Venice say the same? And then they started begging for tourists when Covid-19 hit.
@@hassanalihusseini1717 Then again what is the gain in an economy model based on tourism? There isn't. Been here living before it exploded to tourists and I tell you, it was good. Nowadays you can't live in the city due to tourism. Everything is based on tourism. Does Gentrification sound familiar to you? Over pollution? Over prices? Yeah stop it. We, locals, need to be able to live in our city first. Then we can speak about tourism
@@omar72 okay. It's not boring, and it is as dirty as any other city can be. Dirty is the pollution of the airplanes arriving every single minute each minute. Or the cruise ships. That is dirty and free cancer for us who live here.
Linz tourism presentation : 1st thing we're famous for : Do Not Mention That Ever. Never.
Everybody comes from somewhere.
I am from linz and you might have shown me places i'll try out because of you that i haven't tried yet.
Kind of cool to see a video about my himetown. Well done!
Literally everyone in Linz: We don't want tourists here"
Linz Tourism Board: Am I a joke to you?
maybe the job of Linz Tourism Board is to prevent tourism
@@BernhardEhm well the city isn't exactly boarded up to prevent entry. By that token they're probably not doing that great of a job.
The official tourism commercial for Linz basically says, "We are oldschool, we are racist, we are unfriendly, but there's some cool stuff here and there, so if you wanna check us out, go for it. If not, who cares."
But honestly, it kinda works. The only thing tourists are usually a little bit shocked about is when they realise that pretty much every building in the inner city turns into a pub at night and that the streets that seemed so peaceful to them during the day are now filled with tons of singing drunk people.
I feel like I'm watching a cable TV show. This is so well done! I love the camera work! Stunning work guys!
As a New Zealander I can sympathize with a place that doesn't want tourists. If you are local they often clog up public facilities, drive up the local cost of living and are sometimes disrespectful towards locals (Some people even defecate on private property if freedom camping). It has been a big economic boost but there are many downsides.
They are really fun to prank though, once made a hole bunch of chinese turists believe with my broken chinese that mt alfred (in glenorchy, an hour from queenstown) is a volcano that could blow any second
@@falkkiwiben I do that but since I am from central North Island I just point at all the real volcanoes around me and say that each of them could blow up any second and kill us. And that isn't even a lie.
Same here in Canada. Tourists can be a massive pain but come with the benefits of economic growth without having to increase oil extraction.
@@XER0GRAVITY I wouldn't say no increase in oil extraction, they still have to fly over and consume more products.
So to be fair, you are not travelling outside your town not to distress others as a tourist, right? Or are you different?
German lesson for Janek:
German: k. u. k. (pronounced kah und kah), short for “kaiserlich und königlich”
English: Imperial and Royal
Funny for a Swedish little bit unmature person. ;)
Nebo česky c.k. (císařsko-královský).
@@jozef_chocholacek No, no. These were two different (and pretty confusing) things.
k. u. k. (c. a k. in Czech) was used for titles of governent/court in whole Austria-Hungary where "roayl" stands for Kingdom of Hungary.
On the other hand, k. k. (c. k. in Czech) was used for titles only in Austrian partof Austria-Hungary (or whole Austria before 1867) where "royal" stands for Kingdom of Bohemia.
@@vaclavblazek thanks (v tomhle trochu plavu)
@@vaclavblazek That place´s name was k.u.k Hofbäckerei = meaning "Imperial court bakery" ...That means that they were official suppliers for the imperial court.
So when ever someone of the Habsburg family was in Linz then soley that bakery had the privilege to supply their goods to them.
and k.u.k. just means "kaiserlich und könglich" = "imperial and royal"
Cannot believe you were in linz and we missed you ! I hope you really enjoyed it !
I'm an atheist, but putting advertisements on a cathedral or a church or any historical/classical building is plain distasteful..
when atheists destroy the world inch by inch.. I mean what should I expect? a full church? lol
The Ads are there to finance the costly restoration of the historical church. Yes it does look very bas but its sadly a necessary thing.
@@mohammedk7538its not. It could be on the lawn or something. Not blocking architecture

"I am a traveler, all others are tourists." How often you can hear that....
If you guys ever come to Switzerland, you all should come to Basel.
I know some cool places.
Viele sagen Bern ist noch besser als Basel, was sagst du ?
Aaah, Basel, such a nice place. I stayed there for 10 days in midsummer time 20 years ago and I strolled down your beach... and that Italian lady that went out completely furious of that coffee shop self mumbling with a shrieking voice "Maaaa questa gente... siete mati nella testa, 5 franchi per un solo cafe... (but, these people...you are crazy right in the head, 5 francs for just a coffee..."). I used to walk up to Germany in order to eat an affordable lunch in Mc D's. Aaaah, those great times in Basel...
Hi Janek, I'm glad that you were able to give such a great report about Linz. I grew up not too far from there, in the 'Salzkammergut'. I'm also happy that you didn't run into any scams there. 🙂
Thank you from England, have been visiting Linz for over 40 years. My sister married an Austrian!
I really loved Linz and Höhenrausch when we stopped there on our Danube cycle tour about ten years ago :)! Good to see it still has a great atmosphere
BRUCKNER! The reason I want to make a pilgrimage to Linz. ( He was a composer. He's buried under the altar in St Florian's Monastery).
There is a Anton Bruckner Museum in Ansfelden where Bruckner was born (like 5 km from Linz) it’s called the ABC - Anton Bruckner Center
I was there this morning. There was a man playing piano. It was awesome. There was Chopin , i know that
I was in Linz back in 1985. I need to go back to see how much (or how little?) it's changed. Thanks for the video! 👍🏻😊

I hitchhiked Europe and got to Linz by mistake... Police wouldn't let me play my instrument to collect money for food/sleep and I was in kind of bad shape. Till I met some really nice people who hosted me and from there I got to know the best people on my trip to Vienna.
Austria is still special for me because of my experiences in Linz.
Love the place even tough it is very untouristic place to visited.
@Dany Henriquez your comment screams bootlicker.
It is neither polite nor called for.
@Dany Henriquez I was in my twenties and that was part of the experience - hitchhiking and playing music, trusting good people along the way. It was intense and something I don't think I'll do again. But I'm sure a person like you will never experience something so spontaneous and exciting... just saying
You would have to get a permit from the city hall, but i don't know how easy that would be...
I passed through Linz in a bus on my way from Prague to Salzburg. I liked the green hills around the city!
FYI there are advertisments on the cathedral because it is getting renovated right now and there was a fundraiser
Thanks for the video. Linz is one of my favorite cities and I have spent a fair bit of time there and on occasion I am happy to return there as I have friends living close by. Enjoyed your video, great job!!!
Looks like Linz really suits you
i like how i walk here almost everyday not making much of it
and you get excited by seeing these big e-busses
I visited some distant relatives in Linz a few years ago. Known as an industrial city with a connection to some very unsavory characters from recent history, I was surprised by the lovely old town (largely reconstructed after WWII), the modern architecture, the nearby mountains, and the generally green and pleasant atmosphere. I very much enjoyed my stay.
6:35 The two time champion in bottom right!
Thanks for this video. I wanted to visit Linz last May, but obviously couldn't. You've provided some great additional tips.
Thanks for your great videos ,
After seeing this one we decided to have a 4 day stopover staying near Linz in May.
Driven through Linz many times but never stopped! Looks like I have been making a big mistake. I see you're enjoying the Weissbier.
Actually that were always "Zwickl" a natural/cloudy beer with some yeast, like Eggenberg Naturbursch at Pöstlingberg, Schladminger bioZwickl at Sandburg, BioKübelbier at Granit, Kaltenhausner Zwickl at Pauls, maybe Freistädter bioZwickl at OKPlatz (+cafe meier) and so on (stiegl zwickl at Stieglklosterhof, Josef's hausbier from Wieselburg, Obertrumer Zwickl at STWST/Cafe Strom,) but at AEC-Cubus there is Gösser Naturweizen from tap

I'm going to Linz tomorrow and enjoyed your advice on where to go 😊
Linz is the birthplace of Adolph Hitler -- this was his home town. My ex grew up in Linz 50 years ago. Her grandfather was a farmer who had been in WW2. His farm went down to the water, and after the war he sold it and a hotel was built there. WW2 history wasn't taught much in school in the 1970s, and adults did not discuss the war. One of her teachers did teach it, but that was rare and frowned upon. She asked her grandfather if he was afraid of anything. He said he was afraid of death, because he knew he was going to hell.
Hitler was born in Braunaun, went to School in Lambach and spent his youth in Linz. Stop spreading BS.
Linz is the city, where i went to school and working place for over three decades now, but from time to time, i forget how much has this city to offer :-)
My Mother was born in Linz and lived briefly in Enns and I am looking forward to seeing this area, hopefully soon! If I can make it work out somehow, I would even consider living here or at least nearby.
Follow up... I did get to see Linz! I loved this city and it is very much worth visiting. I am already planning my next visit, hopefully next year. This is one of my candidate cities to possibly move to in the future. Since my last post, I was granted Austrian citizenship so now it is a real possibility for me to make Austria my new home!
A Czech kid teaching you German, in Austria, in English. Amazing.
Also, don't knock those €5 Rolex watches. I have one which I paid about £20 for in Bali some years ago. When it needed a battery the jeweler told me that the mechanism was a budget Seiko product which he has to pay £20 for. OK, so it's a fake, nothing works except for the time/date but it keeps excellent time. You should buy that watch
Awesome video!! Love the way you present it.
We love the Saturday markets, too! Thanks for turning us onto the Blesi Trhy Praha market when we ran into you! Safe travels!
The first of your videos I've seen-- nice job! The Linz title caught my eye-- I passed through on a bike ride two summers ago. I barely saw any of the city, but you've given me a reason to go back. Thanks-- will subscribe now :)
Definitely need to put Linz on my list. Not a fan of moving platforms like at Hohenrausch but I would force myself to go to the tower because of YOLO.
Nah its a boring industry city…
You should come visit Brescia in Northern Italy, sandwiched between Milan and Verona and often overlooked by tourists!
3:14 By that logic, the cathedral in Innsbruck is even taller.
We were to Linz 2 yrs ago. The town is (surprisingly) worth visiting indeed. Danube embankment in the very downtown is really monumental, for example.
glad to see your videos are starting to get good again!

I’ve been to Linz recently, unfortunately on Sunday, when most of the shops and restaurants are closed. I still managed to find an opened restaurant and the trip turned out to be really nice, but I definitely recommend going to Linz some other day (plus Höhenrausch is permanently closed).
Well, you guys did it! #linzislinz

Oh by the way the "k. u. k" front of Austrian businesses means "Kaiserliche und Königliche" and has the meaning that they were approved to deliver to court of the Emperor - a special honor at that time. These times it is only meaning that that business has a long tradition of being in business - at least more that 100 years - and had the special honor that the Emperor bought regularly stuff from them.

If you liked Linz, you should also do Graz. Somewhat larger, maybe a bit more touristy, but has a similar small-ish town vibe if you ask me, without sacrificing your typical large-city perks too much.

Great video! James Bond is MI6, if he was MI5 they wouldn't go to all those stunning locations, as they deal with UK counterintelligence... But it does look like the real life MI6 building.
If you want to be pedantic - it's not MI6, which is something else entirely. The official title is Secret Intelligence Service, often abbreviated to SIS.
@@farmersteve129 while technically correct, "MI6" is used far more than "SIS" in both the films and common parlance, to the extent that the first words on the SIS's own website are: "We are SIS - the UK’s Secret Intelligence Service - also known as MI6"
