I'm not a fan either. I like the function that it can degrain and sharpen but bad upscaling is the result of a lack of detail. Although I have a 4K scan of the original negative for "Trinity and Beyond" I find that 4K can be difficult to work with and often doesn't give you the improvement in resolution especially if it originated in 16mm. Much of the problem here wasn't necessarily that it was upscaled from video resolution, but that it was upscaled from a Beta SP rather than a Digital Beta. There are more artifacts on a Beta SP transfer than on a DigiBeta transfer. However, all new material that I acquire and work on is at least HD. Some special 35mm emulsions had such good resolution that they can be scanned at 6K.
Not a fan of AI upscaling, its objectively terrible. I hope you stick to Full HD or 4K Film scans instead of doing this.
