To be honest, we lost this because of special teams. How many fair catches did we make? We screwed up the snap on the missed fg. We couldn’t make it past the 20 on kickoffs. We routinely gave up field position. Why does our special teams coach still have a job?

You have to stop saying they are beating themselves. When you have a program with a 49-68 record over the past ten years and a coach with only two career wins against ranked teams, you need to be saying they just aren't that good. If the talent was that much more superior, then 4 plays against a team on their 4th QB wouldn't have dictated the outcome.

Hard to answer all three questions. Sadly when 10-0 and the “muffed punt” happened, knew we were in trouble. Unfortunately the past decade has shown breaks won’t go our way so can’t say surprised lost. Just baffling how can always find a gut wrenching/heart breaking way. Just incredible how bad Iowa offense is year after year and can have winning records and find a way to have the ball for a last second FG.
I don’t think the season is a loss as have a lot of young talent and bowl game practices to improve. It really does boil down to eliminating a few bad/missed plays a game. Players have to make plays and team has to develop and offensive identity.
I am very nervous what the portal is going to do to this team with the roster limits now (Railo stay or go), what signing day will look like, and what happens with the coordinators.
See what happens at the bowl game and build for next year. GBR

Great job Adam - another very tough Gut Reaction to produce for someone that cares. Totally agree with everything you said. Dylan's ball security was bad all game. The last fumble was #3 by him in the game, was it not? In addition to the dropped pass right in the receiver's hands, there were also a couple missed passes to wide open receivers. I was thinking we had a great advantage if it went to OT given their complete lack of offensive production/our great defense. That "muffed punt" that wasn't was bizarre - what did the refs see? There was also the fumble that wasn't called a fumble initially and then after review, they said "the call was confirmed". Reffing continues to be an issue and - conspiracy theory warning - why is it always not in Huskers' favor? I also was thinking a Husker big victory after the first two possessions since we were looking so incredibly good on both sides of ball. Ha! But then we stopped scoring and the "Iowa is going to take this from us" doubts started creeping in. So darn frustrating. Sure the fans are upset but I feel so badly for the players.

Iowa won by three which is fitting, because they won for three reasons:
    1. They could make a big play on offense breaking a big run-we couldn't.
    2. They could make a big play on defense-getting the sack and fumble-we couldn't.
    3. They can create an edge on special teams-getting the fumble, making big kicks-we couldn't.
We need playmakers and it would help if we could get really strong in special teams as well or we will continue to lose to them like this every damn time.

@DeBa1226 nice of you to put words in my mouth. I didn't say proud, but making a bowl game is mostly a success since we haven't in 8 yrs. Getting over that hump can be the hardest part, and it was done on a team with players who have built a culture of losing. Have to acknowledge successes when they come as they are far and few between.
Could Rhule have replaced the entire team with different players, uprooting students' lives in the process for the sake of winning? Sure, but he didn't want to do that, and I respect that. He had to try to instill a winning mentality into losing mentalities. That's harder to do, but it will be a stronger program in the end, and I am sure the players appreciate it and will help them mentally far into the future. As a long-time fan, I appreciate the more respectful path, although the harder one!

"Ok guys, we're going to suck on def line, off line. Our running game which we rely on, will be non existent. We're going to have 1/2 or less yards. 1/2 or less possession time. But... we plan on their QB fumbling a couple times, a bad ref review will give us the ball near the goal line and we still won't score a TD, and the last QB fumble we'll recover on their side of the field, and we'll barely make a long field goal to win the game! Saturday morning review.
Floyd Richter, O'Neill Nebraska. Graduate OHS class of 1968. Played rt guard, left defensive end. Went 11 and 0. Beat Chadron 14 - 7 in homemade playoff game up there.
    1. I'm not in disbelief we lost.
    2. Most frustrating part about this loss is play calling, quarterback play.
Holgorsen looked like last guy. Why can't we tell relievers get beyond the line of scrimmage or I won't pass to you. Way to many catches behind 6line to gain. Are you chickens. Instant failure. Defense was always right there to tackle you. You've got to get past the line to gain. You aren't getting do overs.
Second most frustrating part. Put Harrberg in. Coaches have fallen in love with Raiola. He's too green, he's not a fighter, and he wants to be a cheerleader before he's done hus job. He functions like a premadonna. He's not a dual threat quarterback. Put Harrberg in at least half the time. Coach Rule has fallen in love with Raiola and it's killing us.
    3. This season was an improvement but why didn't Rule have Holgorsen from the start of the season? We're red because that's catsup on our shirts.
Love your take AC. You're right on on your take and love ❤️ your commentary.

    1. No, not surprised Nebraska lost because on your Iowa prediction video I commented, “Win the field position battle. Don't beat yourself with penalties, turnovers and poor special teams which give Iowa a short field. Make Iowa drive the length of the field to score.” Obviously, Nebraska failed to do those things.
    2. Most frustrating part is knowing who Iowa is and how they play and the coaches still fell for it along with poor offensive line and special teams play again! FIRE DONOVAN RAIOLA & ED FOLEY!!!
    3. The regular season will be a success if Donovan Raiola, Ed Foley and Garret McGuire are fired. In Donovan Raiola’s first two seasons there were ZERO offensive linemen from Nebraska on any of the B1G first, second or third teams and it is unlikely there will be any this year either.

I was very concerned when NU missed the field goal. I just thought that was the beginning of the end.
The most frustrating part of the loss was how Nebraska tried to start playing keep away with 8 minutes left in the game. Just a terrible decision. And why does Dylan Raiola seem to just collapse mentally in the 4th quarter of close games? That’s a trait that the program has been dealing with for a long time now. The fact that it’s carried over from one coaching staff to the next is wild.

The only loss on the online that hurts is losing Scott. Sorry but the back up RT can't be worse than benhardt. Neyor and banks we largely not as advertised. I think losing Coleman was bigger loss than losing either of them. Wright can step up to replace hill. Robinson and Hutchmaker while big hits are replaceable.

You know my favorite part of the game was how on 3rd and long we kept doing short pass run plays where we would throw the ball laterally 5 to 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage. It was a great plan to try and gain 15 yards instead of just the 10 or I don't know throwing the ball down fucking field.

My favorite part of the game was Dylan getting stripped of the ball with like 1:35 left to play…. Because I knew something sideways was about to happen! It always does! NU always finds a way to rip your heart out just when you think they’re on the verge of something good happening. I’ve seen this play out more times than I care to remember over the years. You can etch it in stone, AND opponents have come to know that too. We don’t have a coaching staff great enough to turn that around.

Adam, I need your help. I called into Big Red Overaction and one of the hosts told me "I was lips to God's ears", when I talked about how to throw the bones correctly, and on 3 and out. The other host was not about it and said talk to Grant Wistrom and Jason Peter's. So I can't reach out to them but maybe you can educate me and others on how to throw the bones

Great video from an Iowa fan . The statement Iowa touched the ball first is really funny when you said it didn’t matter what color of shirt you wear , because it does ! I didn’t see anything positive of that case , the video couldn’t show it that close so it’s all to do with the color of your shirt . When I saw it I thought it could go either way . Bad season for the hawks in my opinion . Should have only lost one to the bucks teeth eyes . I believe iowa loses at Lincoln next year , we lose a lot of seniors and much tougher schedule . Gotta believe the buskers will have 8 wins next year tho .

To me, two of the most frustrating things about the special teams unit is neither of the long snappers are young kids, and it appears the coaches didn't think having a good, experienced second LS was much of a priority. Camden Wituki's a junior and was the #2 long snapper last year. This is his first season of extensive game action, but he's been snapping in practice since 2020. Aidan Flege spent two years at Iowa Western CC, redshirting in 2021 and playing in 2022 before transferring to Nebraska. He wasn't even on the Nebraska team in 2023, he was just a regular student!
It's not like Rhule and Foley didn't know Marco Ortiz was out of eligibility at the end of last year. It's also not like the best LS in the portal before this season got scooped up by higher profile P4 program, either. The #1 LS in the portal, Carson Selee (5-star rating by Kohl's Transfer Camp) was signed by Buffalo.

The answer to the number 2 question is " What is the most disappointing" That Matt Rhule still gets paid $8 million after failing 50 percent of the time this year and Dana gets paid $66,267 for failing 2/3 of the time for 3 weeks work. Where is the accountability?

Nebraska football seriously needs to see a shrink about their rivalry against Iowa in football. The way I see it; Nebraska suffers from low self-esteem issues and can't seem to get over it. Meanwhile, Iowa once again won all their B1G rivalry games, and a warm bowl awaits them.

Matt Rhule's expectations of games going down to the very end, and the expectation that our toughness that will win is old stuff. He lets the clock run down by huddling late, and it has become self fulfilling prophecy. Why can't we follow the template of great halftime adjustments, and usually a win. We play not to lose period.

Run up and down the field for yardage all you want. The idea is to score more points than the opponent. We scored Zero second half points for the 3rd or 4th game this season, but they’ll tell ya, Dana called a heckuva game, and sure are proud of those guys in there.

I was not surprised. I think going to a bowl game is a sign of success. I also think continuing to lose games (esp one score games) that are winnable is a sign of lack of success. So I think Coach Rhule has had some measure of success but next year he must show improvement over these types of losses.

No yeah I'm pissed. The players, THE PLAYERS, on offense sold this game fr. The coaches did well for the most part. The complaints of the final drive fall on deaf ears because we should be going for the win. We want to be CFB playoff contenders we better be able to clear off teams like Iowa when we need too. But we didn't ... OUR SPECIAL TEAMS SOLD OUR TEAM ON CLEARANCE! There were some weird ass ref non calls for Nebraska. But the players didn't show up. Too many missed catches (throws in the first half), the defense was locked in besides one broken run that there was a missed block in the back call. A team THIS GOOD shouldn't be LOSING! ... LIKE THIS!!! We look how goofy CU looked last year. I'm glad we have the bowl game practices to use. USE THEM ALL!!! PLEASE!!!

Getting to bowl eligibility was the "floor" for this season. I think HCMR realized that and thus made the absolutely correct decision to bring in DH (and others). So yes, this season was a success in that we made progress and met the minimum level of success.
I was fine with OCDH’s plan and call for the Iowa game. While the result was disappointing, the players were in positions to succeed on multiple occasions. I believe that Holgorsen will improve the players’ execution over time. Instilling a much-needed higher standard of accountability, discipline, and attention to detail will take more than a few weeks.
It will also take a similar level of work for him to get that higher standard from the Offensive Assistant/Position Coaches. All of this improvement happens through development and/or replacement.
I’m guessing that any length of contract that DH agrees to will give him the control that he wants (and has mentioned). I believe that his approach to achieving a higher standard of accountability, discipline and attention to detail from the entire Offense will be much more “intense” and “straight forward”.
We’re often reminded that what we see on the field is either coached or permitted. And what you permit you promote.
We’ve seen improvements in the Offense in just a few weeks… and in a very uniquely challenging situation. I certainly hope we can get DH as our OC for a few years so we can see (by the play on the field) the standard that he promotes.
DCTW needs to continue to improve his unit as well. Consistency will go a long way to creating/sustaining a dominant Blackshirt Defense.
HCMR needs to upgrade the ST Coaching and thus the standard of play from our ST. Our ST play has cost us games and/or has continually been a source of negative plays/outcomes.

Some of the worst playcalling I’ve ever seen. A cold night when it was difficult to catch and difficult to hold onto the football. There was a lot of success running the ball, but we called place that made no sense. Short passes for the sidelines, when there was no room to cut up field. We showed that we could run the ball, but we refused to do it. I just sat back watching it and shaking my head.
