I’m not okay with the no handshake. Rise above and be the man, and shake hands! It’s good sportsmanship, it’s courtesy, and it’s the right thing to do.
They've done it this way for decades. Ron Brown gets the other teams to meet them in the middle for pre-game and post game prayer most of the time... My mama said Iowa is the devil, so they don't pray. 😅
Here's the thing about the handshake. Iowa's captains didn't place the police around the logo. The handshake is a normal sportsmanship tradition. Not doing it shows a massive lack of respect. I'm so glad as a hawkeye fan that karma came for the bugeaters once again. Ferentz would never allow his players to do that. He's afraid of scoring points, but he'll never stoop to unsportsmanlike crap.
Thank you doc for being a sensible one. Let's keep the game integral and leave the drama and loudness on the field. We're not even good and strutting around like Billy's and can't win a game. I'm tired of this program. 30 years as a fan and never quit on them...I am this close to call it for me. And honestly it isn't the losing that's doing it.
Anybody who watched the Ohio State - Michigan game knows the "hate the other team" nonsense has gone too far. Cool the rhetoric, respect the other team, and focus on playing a good hard physical game. We don't need all the other crap. There's enough hatred out there. We don't need it in sports.
Yep. Just to add on to that, we can't control what other people do. We can only control ourselves. It means something to act right, even when your opponent doesn't. This is the definition of raising the standard. How can we trust our team to do what's right when they can't even shake someone's hands because they got their feelings hurt?
Nebraska not only lost the game, they also failed the sportsmanship, class and integrity test. It is amazing how far the program has fallen. Rotten to the core. Osborne must be so sick of this.
Thanks for this perspective, agree. Shake hands and catch the darn ball and we are all talking about the win and how nice and warm the bowel game will be. The only thing I disagree with is the FSU sweatshirt???
I grew up in Iowa raised to love Nebraska sports by my native Nebraskan dad. Tom Osborne was my hero. Nebraska could do no wrong. I can't believe the team I grew up idolizing looks more like a Colorado team than an Osborne team. Thank you, Dr. Rob, for bringing clarity to this situation. I know I was just a young teenage girl, completely naive, but your teams brought my family so much joy. I have as many Husker memories with my family as anything else. God Bless!
Let’s not make this too complex. The Iowa players took the not shaking hands as a slight and used it for fuel. If the Nebraska players thought the action of not shaking hands made a point, it did. Advantage Iowa. Mistake Nebraska by adding fuel to the flame plus it made the Husker brand look bush.
Praying at center field of the opposing team's logo is just completely unnecessary. It's just asking for trouble, then we try to act innocent when other teams don't like it. Refusing to shake hands is something losers do. I don't care how "disrespectful" Iowa is to us. We're not Iowa. I don't want to act like Iowa. Same way that I don't want to act like Colorado. That kind of behavior has no place at Nebraska.
My parents taught me to always show respect to the owners’ wishes when I was visiting someone else’s house. So… Please just simply respect the HOME team’s request. If they don’t want visitors praying (or whatever) on their midfield logo, RESPECT THAT as if it were your home field and you were making the same or similar request. It shouldn’t be turned into a viral, social media “thing”. And there certainly should never be any retaliation (e.g. showing disrespect by not shaking hands at the coin toss), if that indeed was what this coin toss-thing was all about. The bottom line is there really is no justification for lack of sportsmanship and/or not showing respect. We don’t have control of the action of others, but we have complete control on how we choose to react.
100%. This is spot on. Respect the game. Respect the opponents. Show them your dislike by beating them on the field.. Perhaps the team needs an on staff therapist to help them beat their own ego. Ego is the enemy.
As a former athlete and a Iowa fan I personally don’t have a big issue with it but I would personally never do that. It’s just not a good look and shows a lack of maturity when in fact these coaches are supposed to be helping these young men turn into grown men. Graduating players and developing good people is first and foremost. On the other thing with praying on the logo of another team that’s also a lack of maturity. Everyone knows it’s a unwritten rule not to step in the other teams logo regardless and you can pray anywhere. I’d actually like to see players from both teams next year before the game get together and pray with each other before the game on the logo if that’s going to be a thing. In warmups you have your 45 yard line on in to do what you need to. Nobody is supposed to cross that mark and these guys no that. They are just trying to push buttons and once again that comes to a lack of maturity. I will say there was no dirty play in the game and that was a bonus.
EVERYONE this is what happened. The 50 yard line was guarded because they wanted people off the field. It was Senior Day and they were marking off where each senior runs out of the tunnel and greets his parents at the 50. Also, along the 50, is where they mark off where photographers, cameramen, cheerleaders, and parents will stand during this pre-game ceremony. As someone who was there, I can tell you that this is what happened.
Huskers, you aren’t good enough to pull this stunt, nor walking through the Hawks warm-up. You have no call to swagger. NONE. I love Ricky Bragg’s quote: “A swagger is a silly walk for a man with so far to go”. I believe it applies to Matt Rhule and his players.
Good, good Takes. Distraction, Distracted, To Distract. Focus! Lock in! Get the W!!! Think About What All Can Happen this Next Play! Be Ready for All of them! That is So Elementary! One of the 1st things Taught in Sports. Along with show good sportsmanship.
Lifelong Bruin fan here, now living in Hawkeye country. I think this whole thing is unfortunate and silly. I really couldn't and wouldn't comment on any perceived "lack of class" by anyone involved in either program, but I can say that the Cornhusker program feels a very very long way away from the glorious teams that I remember from the 80s and 90s - teams that inspired respect and fear. I will also add that I see Coach Ferrentz every few days walking through my neighborhood after practice and he is always extremely friendly and humble... not that it means anything in this particular scenario. I would like to see both programs improve and get back to where the annual game is a contest between top-20 programs featuring high power offenses and attacking, scoring defenses. Yeah, right... I'm not holding my breath. Nice work, guys.
The state troopers on the logo had to do with the pregame Nebraska vs. USC scuffle. This is Iowa's 1st game scuffle, Nebraska's?? Great thoughts, Doc. The game is more mental at the college level vs.physical.
Nebraska and USC got into a scuffle because of the circle on the logo just a couple weeks ago. The Iowa admin didnt want a repeat of that. Thats why the logo was kept off limits
You want to talk about NO CLASS??? Back in 2016, I went to the Iowa game against Nebraska. When the national anthem was being played, the Iowa players were standing in a straight line formation along the sideline facing the flag to give respect and honor for the national anthem, flag and the country. They looked good. Do you know what the Nebraska players were doing? They were still stretching, walking around the sideline like it was still practice and never acknowledged that the national anthem was being played and completely ignored the entire thing. That was BS and totally classless and unpatriotic. But karma is real. That day, the unrated Hawkeyes smashed the #16 rated Cornhuskers 40 - 10. It was beautiful to see that! 😂
There is security on the field before every game in Iowa City. Iowa did not call in extra security just for Nebraska. Administrators from both teams go over the pregame schedule and home field policies during the week leading up to the game. Nebraska fully knew of Iowa’s policy preventing either team from meeting on the midfield logo. I don't think the Nebraska players retaliated by not shaking hands. I believe the two events are unrelated to each other. If they are it's pathetic on Nebraska's part. The Iowa players had nothing to do with law enforcement guarding the logo at midfield. I'm glad Iowa got the last laugh.
as always, great insight..... just play well for the entire game, every game and prove you have the right to represent the state of nebraska and be a husker......
This is not how you coach up your athletes.....this is not Nebraska football....it is disrespectful to this program, and it falls on the head coach who fails to build character. When coaching, I won championships. However, the best accomplishment I am proud of is the boys who played the sport and turned into outstanding men. As for these alledged players, they would still be running around the field.
As an Iowa fan who bleeds black and gold, and recall the 70s where the hawkeyes would be destroyed by Nebraska 72-0 year after year... I'm thinking about a new head coach in Iowa City as it is well time for the torch to be passed. Don't wanna shake hands, fine. Grow up. See you in Lincoln next year.
This is a microcosm of why the Nebraska program is garbage. It starts with the little things (handshakes), and ends with the results (iowa kicking an annual walk off FG to win). Hey nebby, enjoy the Pinstripe Bowl. 😂
Rob is the former player not me but would you not be thinking the same amount for "I'm going to shake their hand" vs "I'm not going to shake their hand"?
I'd say no, you wouldn't since shaking hands then & there is the usual standard custom. So doing it doesn't send any message where not doing it most certainly sends one. So it's a more pre-meditated choice than just doing the regular thing & not really thinking much at all about it.
Ok bullshit and bull shit.. I'm a hawkeye fan, the not shaking hand ordeal would of never happened with Tom Osborne he had way to much class and respect for that to happen...Face it Nebraska is a dumpster fire and the whole program needs to do a total reboot... after all it's just a game no one is going to live or die based on game result..
Love it! Adds fuel to the rivalry, think of the UFC fighters who don't always touch gloves before a fight. We didn't plant some flag on Herky. No fights broke out. Quit being so damn soft and stuck in 30 years ago! It's a new age, do you think that every team shakes hands before rivaly games?
Not respecting our opponent is why NU is losing. Respect, defeat, respect. Praying in center of field is necessary. Focus of prayer is God not us. All about respect. Then victory.
Last Saturday was like this all over college football. It was weird, it was almost like it was planned or something. Fights at multiple games and "flag plantings" and un-sportsman like behavior before and after the games. I realize this stuff has always been around, but it was everywhere. Sure miss the days when Dr. Rob was a captain. I remember Warren Sapp taunting the Husker coaches during the Orange Bowl, but that was all settled on the field. I remember the Oklahoma games in the 70's and 80's when it was a heated rivalry, but the opposing players helped each other up after plays. Now it just seems like a bunch of entitled brats that get way too much attention for nothing and a lot of money for even less. Nebraska can't win on the field, so I guess they're behaving like losers to prove it.
No excuse for poor sportsmanship. It’s a reflection on the Coach , the school, and especially the players. Kirk Ferentz wouldn’t allow this at Iowa. But then Coach Ferentz is a quality person, a great coach and has more Big Ten wins than any other Big Ten coach. Woody, Bo, any of them. Grow up Huskers. Your playing with the big boys now. well said. this is not how midwesterners acts. Iowa or Nebby. Tom Osborne and Nile Kinnick would never do this. Cut the crap and play the game. Yes we Iowa fans all know we got lucky. Im sure Nebbys day is coming. Dont sweat it.
Good go pray some else on the football field. Not on the Hawkeye logo . There bunch of crybabies and poor sportsmanship. Out 10 games they won one game. Lost nine big powerhouse out of 10 .. Don’t like the Big Ten Teams . Leave go back to the Big 12 . You had losing seasons since you joined the Big Ten every year you say how great Nebraska is you . Lucky to get to 500 . This year 3-6 in the big ten almost in last place in the Big Ten . They need to pray to have winning seasons
Both sides are a bunch of crybabies, who cares where they do their pregame prayer and two wrongs don't make it right by not shaking hands. Go around our logo when you play don't want you walking on it. Lol.
We aren't thinking about it it was Iowa making a big deal about it, Iowa players & fans have been trash talking & disrespectful to our players & fans for the last few yrs, we don't condone the non hand shaking& I'm pretty sure Coach Rhule isn't either!
When I heard the Nebraska fans chanting F- Colorado just as the Colorado fans did the previous year, I knew the class act that made the Husker fans respected was over . Maybe the fans rubbed off on our players. Also , Iowa's linebacker Higgins should never jaw jack with the opposition head coach during a game. Coach Rhule pretty much didn't acknowledge him just as he should have. Apparently he said who are you. As for the two Iowa linebackers that said post game that Iowa would never do that and to come to Iowa, they sure forgot fast about the four million dollar settlement for racial discrimination that twelve former Hawkeye players got.
"Nobody is going to plant a flag on your logo, get over yourself." Exactly, because there are six cops to make sure no one does. They are simply being preemptive. Did you not see what took place (over this issue) in the last few days? Iowa had not done this, previous to this last round of "flag planting."
Im ok with not shaking hands. Praying at mid field is not disrespectful. If you take it that way you have bigger problems. Praying in the end zone has the opponent's name on it. Is that disrespectful? No. Get over it Iowa.
Your both missing the point, Hawkeyes every time they come to Lincoln they take their hand in hand swarm to the middle of Husker N midfield right before kickoff and we let them do it !!! Husker Fan and sick of hearing about goody shoes Farentz program and being above everybody else!!!!!!
Not true. They take the hand in hand swarm from their tunnel to their sideline every place they play. They don't make a beeline to the logo or go out of there way. If I am wrong, please show me a video....at Nebraska or elsewhere.
I’m not okay with the no handshake. Rise above and be the man, and shake hands! It’s good sportsmanship, it’s courtesy, and it’s the right thing to do.
Not shaking hands is ridiculous! This isn’t war, this is a GAME! A GAME!
Maybe they should pray in the end zone, then God might allow them to see it more often.
🤣🤣🤣
If you are the visiting team, you should pray anywhere other than the home team’s logo.
They've done it this way for decades. Ron Brown gets the other teams to meet them in the middle for pre-game and post game prayer most of the time...
My mama said Iowa is the devil, so they don't pray. 😅
It is a show of unity for both teams not disrespect.

Dust of frog. 🐸
@@coreyeberly2858you are the best.
That ugly logo has only been on the field for about 5 years, so it's not some sacred longtime thing. Iowa is petty and stupid.
