We hear about how strong and hard to kill they are. How they take much more punishment to take down and striker twice as hard... yet in the end they lose... so what's the point of Primaris again?

BeatingClownz, wouldn’t that be a twist. I strikes me as kinda funny that a hidden cult in Chaos territory could be one worshiping The Emperor.
That’s even better than my Malice/Dark Angels theory/imagination-thing, that Malice will become the fifth Chaos God by turning the entire Dark Angels chapter into Fallen, giving him access to Primaris tech, with which to much more directly screw with his siblings plans.

@@ineedmoreflavour1955 I'd actually argue the second question is a "yesn't". It is very believable that one of the more liberal tech-priest would tinker with the Emperor's work and eventually succeed. Tech-priest like Cawl aren't your average human. @@septicsauce322 i mean.. the imperium has quit literally been split in two by the great rift... whether this will eventually lead to a totally splitting has yet to been explored, since mostly the story has focuses on the not cut off half of the imperium.

@@sirpieman300 Oh, I know that! I am just saying this because of the Primaris Marines.
As most people says, the Primaris Marines make little to no sense lore wise. Their creation makes sense, but the reaction to makes little to no sense! Having the Imperium split on a more ideological level would make a sense: progress vs stagnation. It will be Guilliman and Cawl vs the ones that wish to remain the same.

I sure do love me some Alpha Legion. Despite being traitors, the author of this one manages to trigger a surprising amount of investment into what’s happening to them during the course of this excerpt. I’m not a huge fan of Cawl one-upping the emperor to create even superer -super soldiers, but moments like these are awesome. It almost always feels like the Space Marines/Imperium are the ones on the back foot when up against chaos, but this did a great job of making them feel really powerful, dangerous, and even superior to the traitor legions they’re fighting. It’s good to see them get a bit desperate for a change.

As far as I know Guilliman instructed Belisaurius Cawl to begin work on the creation of the Primaris Project. The Emperor at this time was likely entombed in the Golden Throne and access was extremely restricted. So I doubt that the Emperor was able to give his approval or permission to this endeavor. Given how much we've been shown the sheer power of bolt weaponry for as long as Space Marines have been around, I have to admit it's quite jarring to see them turn into peashooters when fired at Primaris. It just doesn't feel right and it really shatters that sense of extreme firepower they've represented for over three decades.

      @GodlordBazi 4 года назад +8

Depends. It's not like they are doing nothing to the Primaris Marines, those guys are just able to take more rounds than normal Astartes. Even the regular Space Marines were able to take multiple shots of bolt weapons, but lost their ability to keep on fighting, depending on where the shots hit, while Primaris are able to keep on fighting. If it wasn't for this fact, creating Primaris Marines wouldn't have made much sense, since quantity is a lot better than quality if a single hit knocks you out anyway. Russian tank tactics. :

The Lexicanum said something about "9 legion-sized armies", but I think that was an error on their side. Nine legions of primaris marines combined with the already existing Space Marines would make a total of more Astartes than there were arround during the Great Crusade, half of them being superior to the marines of the Great Crusade, which is ridiculous. Actually a fan of the Primaris, in part because they're intended to contrast with the good old Spess Mahreens. It puts the old marines on the back foot, and makes them more humanized by their struggles to deal with something designed to be better than and to replace them. I don't know where GW is planning to go with the Primaris, but the questions and uncertainty it's added make for some interesting interactions. Are they being made kinda OP in lore at the moment? Sure, but even still they lose battles and are killed by older marines using the advantages that chaos warbands have always had over loyalists. And the fact that it's shaking up and adding new blood to even the oldest and most mundane chapters means that we're getting to see a lot of old chapters being revived. It's good to see new challenges and changes introduced, even if my first instinct is to clutch my old codex and fight against the replacements.
There's a lot of potential for good change in the Imperium and the Chapters right now, which is a huge relief after years of stagnation that would make Nurgle blush.

It'd be dope if Roboute, without the knowledge of his brothers, went crazy and Order 66d all primaris to destroy the OGmarines not in UM or successors, as they are too corruptible and then Vulkan or/and Lion has to stop him and kill him, while every chapter descends into chaos, and in the end the Primaris turn out to be not so incorruptible, as many turn heretic in the process, or go mad like the Thunder Warriors. It would be shocking and obvz GW won't do this, but I would love it. Not to subvert storytelling for the sake of it, but just to subvert things to bring in vibrancy. Roboute was trying to Empz 2.0 and basically becomes 40k:evil (he's already evil by our... well, my standards.) That cyclical storytelling (like how Empz hunted TW) is alway appreciated. It would make his character actually worth a damn, and I say that as someone who never hated Roboute for his spotlight, but just found him 1D. At the end before Roboute dies, he repents. Vulkan forgives him and says something cool about how the Empz was pretty much a mad man too, even though he was THEIR mad man. I particularly like the idea of the Lion shunning primaris, because he doesn't trust anyone.
For me that would be much more fun than, "hey here are updated models and it was just some tech-dude he REd the Emperor's arcane, divine genius, cuz it's time for a new look." Primaris could still be there in the end, both as enlightened loyalists and lost traitors, funnelling into traitor legion and stealing primaris geneseed, but their abrupt entrance could get all the mileage its worth this way IMO, and then Roboute could not be so 1d.

Hello everyone! First off, I just want to say a thank you to Wolf Lord Rho for doing this segment of Shroud of Night. I am quite glad that you chose to do a video about this book and the Alpha Legion after me seeing and commenting on your post about you reading this book. Makes me very, very pleased! I love the Alpha Legion they are probably my favorite one! Don't look at me like that! You know you are intrigued by them too!
Secondly, I would like to point out a few things to help highlight how skilled and deadly these Alpha Legionaries are. These Astartes which at this point in the book number less than fifteen Astartes. [I think its been a while since I read it and my copy is already packed up for a move. :( ] They have no surviving Apothecary, Techmarine, or Librarian/Sorcerer just specialists and marines that have had to fill in the roles of their lost brothers. From one hundred to just under 15 Marines. They survived on a world that was stuck in the Warp whose purpose was essentially a last group standing.
But I digress, their sniper has a sniper rifle taken from one of the Mor Dreythan of the Raven Guard, a weapon that is as silent as it is deadly. Earlier in this book we see his prowess of shooting down an aerial craft from midair on an open ramp of a Stormbird while they are being shot at. He plants his stance, takes aim and kills the pilot through the glass. So for this Imperial Fist Primaris to simply get back up after a shot to the head is a big deal for the Alpha Legion. Phal'kir later comments "What was that!? No one gets up after a shot like that from Thelgh!"
When Kassar has to drop his bolter to use two hands to drive his blade further into the Intercessor to kill him is stunning. Kassar's blade is not a simple chainsword or a relice power sword, but a power sword that contains a Slaaneshi Demon inside it!
The Alpha Legion had numerical superiority, stealth, solid weaponry, and decades if not hundreds of years killing Guardsman, Sororitas, and Space Marine Terminators on their side and they still struggle to kill just 5 Primaris Intercessors. Even though they lose no personnel in this exchange they are still unprepared for the Primaris' last effort of stopping them.
Also, of particular interest is their first assumption of the Primaris Space Marines. To my knowledge the last time the Imperium tried tampering with Astartes geneseed was the 21st Founding just before the Age of Apostasy. 7 known chapters are identified as being part of this founding with nearly all of them possessing mutations, terrrible luck, and distrust from fellow chapters. Lamenters: seemingly free of Red Thirst and Black rage, but possessed of a poor luck that sees them consistently under 400 battle brothers or lower for the entire chapter. Currently undergoing Penitent Crusade, and suffered assault from Hive Fleet Kraken. Fate is currently unknown. Flame Falcons: mutations that saw themselves covered in spontaneous flames, but themselves unharmed by it. Their sanity eroded and the Grey Knights had to be called in to exterminate them and their homeworld. Black Dragons: Bone growths that exceed standard skeletal structure. Upon first glance you would think they were Chaos Space Marines with how many bones they have sticking out of them! Under observation by the Adeptus Mechanicus and Inquistion for somehow sending gene samples that always show as pure despire continued bone outgrowths. Blood Gorgons: Okay these Astartes ended up serving Chaos Undivided! The list goes on and on with it only getting worse when Fabius Bile took an interest in the chapters of this founding.
So to my knowledge this Founding marked the end with the Imperium tampering or daring to improve geneseed. Which is all the more remarkable for the fact that the Primaris turn out to be such a resounding success in terms of being free from mutations, idiosyncrasies, and corruption.
Conjecture and Statement: I continue to standby my opinion that Guilliman or Belisaurius Cawl received information from the elements of the Alpha Legion (Omegon at Eskrador?) that led to the development of the Primaris Project. I also believe that the Traitor Legions are still unable to create their own Primaris Marines, a possibility that is chilling in its possiblity now that we know when Loyal Primaris are capable of..
Again thanks for posting this and leaving me wondering when the next Alpha Legion clip is going to slink their way into view!
"No gods, no warlords. For the primarchs and the Harrow."

The 20th is the wild card to end the war. Using chaos to kill chaos and not being affected by it. Hell. Even Perties boys. Cut off all “chaos infection” and go. Cyber replacement. He hates chaos and sees the “gifts” and a determent not a boon. The 20th will come back into the fold and distribute the raptor protocol to all the loyalists. The hydra has to have a shit ton of troopers since they have access to that kind of rapid growth of SM. They have very good reasons to keep that shit from Fabiois Bile. That shit would be. Game ending in his hands.

  • @slyscott1430

I really took immediate interest in the cultural pov difference from the loyalists, with the traitors. You have an enemy that knows just as much about you, as you do about yourself. Some knowing more of your own roots, strategies, hardware, chain of command, your moves, back up plans, they know who to target, who to avoid, and more. Because they were once like you, brothers, son's.
I just loved how you could so easily see what it was like to truly know your enemy, through this video and how much it's over looked. Up until now, the traitors pretty much were the enemy that knew the imperium the best and so that alone made them an enemy worth fearing. But now take note of how close they came to a huge loss, just by being wrong about knowing their enemy.
You may know so much, down to the thoughts and feelings of the imperium, but what you don't know, can kill you. They did not expect this, not even to be so sorely mistaken. The Alpha Legion did not know their enemy like they thought. And here you get a perfect glimpse of what that's like.
    That's just my take away.

I actually find the Alpha Legion so complex and interesting, mainly because of the mystery. But also because of their own individual strength and size compared to other space marines.
Their reaction to the primaris is humbling and rightfully so. I love reading about the Primaris due to the “underdog” vibe they have while being such BRICKS in the field.

I love the AL and therefore absolutely loved that book! I t really made me want a specific AL codex, to showcase exactly how different their tactics and fighting styles are in comparison to the usual Chaos Marine fare! I especially loved the team demographic- how different they all were. How some were falling to chaos despite not wanting to, some resisting chaos against the odds and some wanting to serve the ruinous powers! Each marine felt like an independent character in his own right! I feel the story was left on a big cliff hanger too. I'm really hopeful for a sequel, sooner rather than later!

I think myself moving forward in the hobby. I'm going to buy sets to paint and then sell. As long as I can get the investment back then I'll be able to still be able to enjoy it in a lessened degree. The problem for me has always been. The hoarding aspect which becomes inevitable with new and great models coming out all the time. Though I think if I can have a budget to buy and replenish that budget by selling what I've painted then I'll hopefully not fall back into the negative trappings of the hobby. Another problem for me is transporting models and the inevitability of prized pieces becoming damaged in transit. Also rules that change all the time. With that by the time I'd learned the rules well enough to employ tactics to win a new edition would be produced and the rules would be changed. Though if I just paint the models which has always been my greatest enjoyment, second only to the stories and the fluff. I'll be bypassing, the more tedious parts of the hobby. It seems to be successful at the game. Every other aspect of life requires to be sacrificed. Its like the subscription to an mmo which you'll never have enough time to learn.

I've always been fans of the Alpha Legion and the way they carry themselves during battle. So when they fought these Primaris Imperial Fists, I was really interested in how the Sons of Alpharius would handle Roboute Gulliman and Belisarius Cawl's new modifications to the Loyalist Astartes.
I also like how they still respect the Emperor, showing that not all Traitor Astartes have been blinded by Chaos.

That line about them being desperate is so much more telling about their feelings; For one, as you said, it shows that the alpha legion members are impressed with their own merits of pushing the Imperium to tamper with the Emperor's work, but also shows that they're now on-edge, maybe even fearful about what's to come. A cornered animal is a dangerous animal.
