Johnny Mathis ~ When Sunny Gets Blue

- Опубликовано: 20 июл 2013
- One of the original tracks on Johnny's first Greatest Hits album, 1958, (the first Greatest Hits album ever released by any artist - also a hit 45" single, on the flip side of "Wonderful, Wonderful", 1958). Johnny's sensitivity and ability to ooze romanticism and melancholy into a song makes indelible impressions here. To my ears - this is a very 'sweet' song. Johnny's voice is sweet, 'velvet' as it's been called, alluring. Listen at 41-42" - when he sings "she breathes a sigh of sadness"-- you'll hear the elongated breath, here, and in several other places in the piece. Listen 'in' with headphones - you'll find yourself 'sighing' as well..... Enjoy.
Composed by Marvin Fisher and Jack Segal. Others, Sarah Vaughn among them- one of Johnny's favorites- covered Johnny's version of it.

classic and Incomparable
This is one of the best songs ever written.
beautiful - agreed.
Good old days...when singers sang melodies worth being heard...
What a wonderful song. I first heard this as a boy in grade school, and would sing along so many times that I lost count. Still has that mysterious influence on me.
Same here.
Been in love with this beautiful man and his music since I was 16... still gives me goosebumps...
Oh yeah…many moonlit evenings spent sitting next to my guy - just outside of town, parked out of sight - listening to Johnnie’s songs. I wonder how many teenagers fell in love listening to Johnnie Mathis singing his songs of love.
Me too ❤
Another great song from The Master of Music
That voice is so so amazing.
what a voice thanks
This song takes me way, way back. My parents loved Johnny Mathis. This song (and other songs of his) are the first songs I can remember as a little kid. I couldn't have been more than 2 - 3 yrs old at the time. Thanks for posting!
the was one of the best. I loved him...I am listening to him right now.
Marvelous Mrs Maisel brought me here. My mother played this nonstop when I was a baby. I knew it instantly without knowing it. He sings through the entire song without a break. His breath control, tone and melodious voice is breathtaking. Wow. Genius. 🐐🔥👑❤️❤️❤️

So gorgeous. One of my top favorite recordings by Our John, truly the Voice of Romance, the title I gave him in 1995.

Love this song
Just about the best performance of this great classic jazz tune one could hope for.
Born on September 30...a good day to be born.
Beautiful, Bravo to Mr.Mathis👋👋👋👋👋👋👋a living legend. Mr.Mathis has such an amazing voice.( None like any other.) I've heard many songs that he has covered, he always makes them his own ( as do many other vocalists) However Mr.Mathis' s voice is so unique, with such rare quality( that is so absent, in these days and current times.) Just my humble opinion. I end in saying, thank you Sir, for entertaining those of us who have so much admiration and respect for you and the astounding talent , that God has blessed you with. May you continue to deliver songs, with such dignity and class.Peace, Love and an Abundance of Blessings, and a safe and Happy Holidays to All.✨✨✨✨
love this version of this song.
What a voice ❤️
this sounds like it was recorded in the 60's. He sounds that good still!
1958 to be exact (see notes above). This is such a wonderful song- it's pure Mathis magic - sensitive expression. He does sound terrific now- . He cares for his voice like a fine instrument- which it is. And we all benefit. enjoy.
+imbees2 good call....Nelson Riddle maybe?
..only the best..
Greatest of all time. IMHO
Dear God. Where is this girl. I loved her.😘⚘♥️
I relate to this!
So soothing!
glad you enjoyed it!
Gorgeous
When you read the lyrics only, the story told is so hauntingly sad.
God I love him! 🥰
That was great, Lenore. His expressions are perfect. Almost like live. I absolutely love the photos but I have a favorite at 1:28. And the ending, was unexpected and different. Great job. Thanks for the lovely upload.
Johnny Mathis had an incredible voice. Wow, what a classy singer. Loved all his songs! (Delia Bottoms, not Steve)
Jonnhy Mathis é a melhor voz da história humana. No Brasil, há fãs clubes e milhares de apreciadores.
Bela voz 👏 👏
Classic
Love it, one of my very favorites!
Love thìs
Beautiful0
Thanks for this one, it is one of my many favorites. You do such a good job, volume is good and pictures are great.
thank you very much - so glad you enjoyed it- i do love this song as well- and well- i don't think anyone- anyone- can deliver it like Johnny.
i hope so- thank you. ! not to be gushy here- but from your artist's perspective- i really appreciate it.
Flipped over to B side and discovered this classic. !
thank you, Angela, so glad you liked it. I appreciate your compliments. Aim to please! That photo is actually a very sweet/sensitive one, I agree. I had something else in mind for the last photo- a recent one- but this worked out fine. I prefer this shot in black and white- the lighting is better- and wanted end this classic with a 'punctuation mark' - of sorts. Thanks again.
Notice how he’s not breathy like a lot of singers are.
When Sunny gets blue
Her eyes get gray and cloudy
Then the rain begins to fall
Pitter patter, pitter patter
When Sunny gets blue
She breathes a sigh of sadness
Like the wind that stirs the trees
Wind that sets the leaves to swayin'
Like some violins are playin'
Weird and haunting melodies
People used to love to
Hear her laugh, see her smile
That's how she got her name
Since that sad affair
She's lost her smile
Changed her style
Somehow she's not the same
UMA DAS MAIS BELAS MÚSICAS QUE JOHNNY MATHIS GRAVOU ! LÁ SE VÃO MAIS DE 60 ANOS DE ESTRADA ! TENHO PRATICAMENTE TUDO DELE, MUITA COISA AINDA EM VINIL ! DESDE O FINAL DOS ANOS 50 ATÉ AGORA ! Johnny Mathis then now Michael Buble'......................romance at it's finest................love sweet songs soft n tender......................
how do you dislike this song? how?
drew tube 2 some people are not good
Sports - its beautiful, of course
You have to forgive them. They're tone deaf.
this really is the best all time version. Gonna check out the Chet baker version. I think he is the only viable contender.
A gorgeous voice. You are right about his capacity to infuse feeling into his voice.
I am not sure what you could mean by
" Sarah Vaughn among them- one of Johnny's favorites- covered Johnny's version of it."
Many people have sung it, including Sarah Vaughn, Mel Torme and Nat King Cole, but when they do so, they cover the original song, not another singer's version of it.
II try to do this song on the ukulele, but I wonder about the lyric - some wonderful lines, but I suspect the sentiments in the song - pitying someone, a young woman of course, who can only be cheered finally by new love - doesn't really work for modern sensibilities. Love to play it, but I cringe a little at the dated conceit.
I just heard Sunny by Dusty Springfield...........a different kind of song......not as romantic...but I love her other songs......Don't know what it is that makes me love you so..........................great......song
💯💯💯💯👍👍
Well, it sure was a punctuation mark. Great artistic idea.
