    Thank you. I was able to replace the timing belt and water pump on my 2007 Highlander. It is because people like you that share your time helping people like me that makes RUclips such an amazing resource. BTW I had almost 160K on my original timing belt and my water pump was starting to leak. I think I did this job just in the nick of time.

    I'm glad you showed us how to unthread the puller bolts from the harmonic balancer by hand.

    Good video man followed this exactly on a 2006 Highlander. There are a few minor difference with the hardware up top but once I got in it it was identical. A small note with those 2 studs that hold that aluminum bracket to the engine you can use a 7/32" socket on them as it fits perfectly. Thanks!

    The bolt for the puller is 8mm by 1.25mm thread pitch.

    These engines are a total pain in the rear end to work on when it comes to timing belts/water pump. My 2004 Highlander 3.3 you have to remove one of the cam shaft sprockets along with the metal cover underneath those to access the water pump. Total pain in the rear end but it can be done

    Presently at the point of removing the timing belt but had planed on removing the front cam pulley. It's on really tight. So I am now going to try to pry the rear plate out to gain clearance for the pump removal. Also, I was looking for the timing mark on the cover for the rear pulley, had seen the depression on the rear mounting bracket and dismissed it as that is common forming of brackets of this type. Now that I know that is for timing I have the reference. I really don't think that lining up all those is a requirement as long as the cams don't force the valves into the piston. With the marks on the belt and the marks on the pulleys everything should line up. Realigning as you've done doesn't hurt though.
    I like the idea of blowing out the bolt mounting holes as the pulley on my water pump had worn considerably and the belt developed tons of fabric that was throughout the belt path area. It is going to require quite a bit of cleaning and vacuuming.
    You've got alot of good tips and appreciate your trouble for filming and posting. Thanks!

    One item I would appreciate if you have the information is the torques of the various bolts as too many times small bolts are tightened by too many far too much. These aren't meant to hold the entire car together, simply the one part. It's surprising how low the actual designated torque is for many of these except the crank pulley which is quite high. Torque wrenches are an absolute necessity when working on these aluminum parts.

  • @rickf3006

    All that work, yet you failed to replace the cam and crank seals while you were in there.

  • @bluuedaniel

    my only criticism, sir, is : THE WATER PUMP IS ONLY A 5 LB. TORQUE. if you don't have a torque wrench, use one hand with a small 1/4 drive ratchet, and give a decent little snug. use your brains, not your brawn! other than that, GREAT VIDEO, CARING FOR US LIKE YOUR FRIENDS. AND ALSO, the attachments to your engine, get less torque, usually about 20 lbs, like the belt tensioner. much less than the bolts that hold the engine to the transmission or parts of the engine together. I appreciated the size of bolts given. and the fine detail you give!

    Fist of all thank you for the video and that's one of the best video I seen so far. Right now I am replacing timing belt on 2005 sienna . I am having a bitter of promblem with timing mark. I marked all 3 timing spot. I rotate cramshapt 180 digree and I got top two mark perfectly lined-up. Somehow the small wheel way of the mark.How do we correct this problem. Old timing belt I dinn,t remove yet. It has 90,000ml and le v6 3.3 engine.Your help will I will greatly appreciated very much. Thank very much..

      @dolnick7 5 лет назад +3

      Generally your cam shaft is going to turn at half the distance of your main crank, so the timing marks will be off after a half a revolution, even though this may seem counter-intuitive. Keep rotating your crank shaft and eventually everything should line up for you.

    • @lizard944
      @lizard944 5 лет назад +4

      I've done about six of these on Lexus vehicles. The only real corners to cut are using a cheap, generic kit, not replacing some of the critical components like the hydraulic tensioner, not cleaning things like the pump gasket mating surface on the block, and calling one tooth off on the timing marks, "close enough."

    Thanks but my problem isn't the crank turning when I try to wrench it. Have a tool to brace it. It's that the crank bolt is stuck. will have to have a shop take it out. Even tried bracing the breaker and turning the engine over as a last resort.

Thanks for the video!

      it needs being changed every 90k miles or 7 years , whichever comes first, the 3.3 is an interference engine.

    • @bluuedaniel
      @bluuedaniel 5 лет назад

      Battlehtfred , I doubt if only running it at idle would hurt anything, cripes, you only need it to run 3 seconds to know you’re alright.

    • @HuckBuddies
      @HuckBuddies 2 года назад

      I agree never start an engine without the harmonic balancer. Even if it's for a few seconds. The lower end of an engine is all balanced together from the balancer, through the crankshaft, up to every rod and piston all the way to the back or end of engine where the flywheel attaches. If u have gone through all proper steps including spinning over engine by hand, to ensure timing belt tension and proper alignment of all timing marks. Then u should be confident and good to begin reassembly. (HOWEVER IF FOR SOME REASON U WISH TO BUMP START ENGINE AND LET RUN A FEW SECONDS) AND U HAVE GONE THROUGH ALL OTHER STEPS, TAKE TWO MINUTES TO REINSTALL THE HARMONIC BALANCER. U don't have to crank the bolt down, just slip on the balancer and hand snug the bolt for you BUMP START / 3-5 second run. Only reason I could ever see anyone doing this is just simple reassurance to them selves that they are double verified good to continue. Not everyone has a 100%
      confidence, especially just starting out. However I would never bother trying to start the motor, if it passed spinning the engine by hand several times. I say this because I would instantly know something was wrong or out of time because the engine would not spin over freely as it would start to bind asnd u would be unable to spin a complete 360 with normal strength. ( I will say there is one exception to what I said about I would never try to test start the engine if it passed spinning the engine by hand.) That one exception for me would be ( IF THE TIMING BELT BROKE WHILE THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING. AND I WAS TRYING TO SEE IF MOTOR WOULD RUN A COUPLE SECONDS BEFORE PUTTING ALL BACK TOGETHER. / SO I KNEW IF I HAD BENT VALVES OR NOT.) ALSO ALONG WITH A QUICK TEST START, I WOULD BE DOING A COMPRESSION TEST OF ALL CYLINDERS. (HOWEVER I WOULD NEVER DO A TEST START OR COMPRESSION TEST WITH OUT HAVING THE HARMONIC BALANCER AT LEAST TEMP INSTALLED. BUT THATS ME, SOMEONE WHO WAS A AUTOMOTIVE MACHINISTS BEFORE MOVING CAREERS TO PRODUCTION ASSEMBLY.
