Hi, I stumbled upon and enjoyed your video. You make some cool weapons. I am also a woodworker, specializing in koa wood, but I build furniture. Living in Hawaii and have worked with koa for 30 years. Just wanted to let you, you were looking at the rings on the end of your boards. Koa does not have annual rings, you can not tell the age by counting the rings. That goes for most woods in the tropics. Hawaii is in the tropics, growing happens year round. The rings you see are caused by various other events, such as a dry period or a wet period, or something else. It is very hard to determine the age of a koa tree. In the right conditions it can grow very fast. Also, Koa is not protected or endangered in Hawaii. It has been over harvested in the past, and there are now restrictions on state and conservancy land, but on private land there are no restrictions. there are still containerloads of logs being shipped out to veneer mills, and other vendors willing to pay, and those are prime logs, but no one talks about it too much.

Was considering getting into woodworking as I really enjoyed it while doing home renovations. I have some lilac drying and it kept busting near the ends. I learned I was supposed to use wax on the end to prevent it. Watching this video here, I realize there is so much more to learn. Really appreciate these videos. You definitely have a talent for it and the koa wood is uniquely beautiful. Look forward to your work in the future.

I’m not an expert on tone wood but my guess is like any other woods the finish might need some repair. But the type of maintenance depends on how they finished it, you would want to get with the maker for recommended upkeep 🤙
