A bit of a battle Mike. I didn't realize Koa was that tough. But it certainly is beautiful. Great figure and color. Even though it was a tough turn the result can only be described as outstanding. 👍👍 Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.😃😃
Wow, A bit of a rodeo ride there at the start. We have something called Wandoo here in West Australia. Not as Pretty as KOA, but hard an gnarly. I was sharpening every couple of minutes. That KOA is beautiful and worth the fight. Thanks Mike
What a beautiful piece of wood. Your design even made it better. Great job. I don't recall seeing that big vacuum chuck before--but my memory fails me regularly! Can you point me to a video where you discussed how to make it? Thanks.
I was very interested in watching you turn this Koa bowl, Mike. You and the Koa did not disappoint! You classic design and the incredible figure in this unique wood combine to create a beauty seldom seen. Great finish, too. Nice job, Mike, fun video to watch! 😊 Phil PS: A few years ago I bought all the hardwood a cabinet shop had as they were going out of business. Among the pieces is a 6' long, 15" wide, 1 1/2" piece marked Figured Koa. I've always felt I wasn't ready, not worthy of such a piece. As I age, I wonder if not me than who? Maybe I'm getting close! Your piece certainly teases me in a good way!
While I've never worked with it, Koa has been my favorite wood for a very long time...I love the fact that you picked a shape to save and show off as much grain as possible...it's a beautiful piece!
I'm lusting after some Koa wood for some projects. I am not that experienced to try to turn Koa, but have a few small projects where it would be gorgeous! Got any extra, Mike?
Sweet little bowl Mike. A question for you. I usually turn firewood or rescued logs. I've got a 15-year-old block of walnut. 11.5" x 12" x 2.25" No cracks, no warpage. A pristine block of wood, that I bought years ago. I turn on a fixed income, so I don't want to waste it. Looking for a suggestion of what to turn, that would be outstanding? I'm posing this to several of my favorite turners. Thanks.
Koa wood makes a beautiful bowl blessed from Hawaii positive vibes Hawaiian lifestyle
We agree!

It has an intelocking grain which I have only seen in sweet gum.
Very nice wood. The bowl came out very nice. Thanks for the video. Cheers, Tom
Thank you very much!
Very nice. That wood is beautiful.
Thank you very much!
Wow what a fantastic figured wood. I always appreciate your explanations and reminding us to practice the ABCs of chisel handling.
Thank you very much!
Beautifully done Mike!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😎😎😎
Thanks 👍
What beautiful wood. You never disappoint. I always leave with a new tidbit of knowledge thanks.

Gorgeous bowl Mike. I would love to get hold of some koa but that will never happen. Great turning.
You never know, Jack. It wasn't a wood I ever expected to turn either.
Nice work
Thanks

Lucky you! Emiliano is a pretty nice person, met him at the trade show.
Yes, he is.
Good to see the process all the way through with the several sharpening stops and the grabby grain challenge. Well done once again Mike.
Thank you! Cheers!
Beautiful bowl Mike. The calabash bowl typically has a round bottom. This piece of Koa is amazing. Well done.
Thank you very much!
Fantastic, Mike! Beautiful piece of wood.
Thanks

I would turn a shallow bowl.
My sister-in-law lives on Oahu, you would think she would send me some!
Is she a woodturner?
Even if you live on Oahu, it is hard to find nice koa wood. Prices are not cheap.
@@MikePeaceWoodturning no, sigh… But I did teach her daughter to turn a pen when they visited Connecticut last month, so there’s hope!
Hi Mike. Did you make that V tool or buy it. Thanks
Are speaking of the point tool I used at the end? I made it. Here is the video. ruclips.net/video/AMogaU6aiI8/видео.html_
What kind of wax did you use to prep the end grain?
I used my sanding butter. 4parts mineral oil and 1 part beeswax by weight. Here is the video on making it. ruclips.net/video/snu6IO2qckc/видео.html
Can you check your volume on videos sometimes I can just barely hear you ! And when a commercial comes on I have to turn it down ! Thanks Jim Higuera
Thanks for the feedback. I was using a headset mic under a faceshield and it was a bit low.
Such a gorgeous bowl...the grain is magnificent!
Thank you very much, Carol!
