Aloha!! Since 2012 i have worked with and crafted replica Polynesian weapons using traditional Hawaiian Koa wood, sharks teeth and other traditional materials with modern tools. Learning the craft from a talented carver on the Island of Oahu I grew to love the art, but over the years have been asked many times what these weapons can do. On this channel i will be excitedly sharing not just the creation process but the powerful weapons in use as I test their deadly potential! Mahalo nui(thank you very much) for joining me and enjoy!! Visit my Instagram to see my posts and website to see what I have available for purchase.

Was to match the piece from the movie.
I have one about 1.95m long it’s really heavy and has tiger shark teeth on it.
I feel like this could be a great way to get the algorithm on your side, mabey keep trying to make a few more before moana 2 comes out
Oh man, I love this one! It looks so good 👍
Mahalo!
That is a gorgeous piece
4:24 sketchy tool use😆 that was me earlier today helping my shield maiden make a Xmas decoration she saw on the 'net 😅...
Yaaaaa 😅
What I like about this guy is he is straight to the point
Have do you get everything symmetrical?! This might be a dumb question but I’m curious because I started making mea kaua and my first leiomano is anything but symmetrical
Draw centerlines 🤙
the taiaha
A lot of Polynesian countries are increasingly reliant on Western food imports, which means a lot of unhealthy processed foods
Curious, why are marlin bills more suited for functional use than swordfish bills? I thought that pahi kaua were made entirely out of a solid bill?
Depends on the specific bill. In my experience swordfish bills just tend to be more brittle once dried out. But traditional Pahoa(wood and bone) were more of a thrusting weapon so either material would work well. Wood was the most common though.
@KoaStudio Ah, I think I see. Makes sense given the dimensions of the thing, more empty space I suppose. Also, would you recommend any specific place to order ethical shark teeth from? I'm an amateur woodworker but I've mostly been focused on Atlatls and other Spear throwers, and your content has inspired me to branch out :)
@gangrenousgandalf2102 happy to hear! Teeth I get from a variety of places. Divers, fishermen and collectors.
💯👌
Mad bro.
(new fear unlocked)
😅
Fine craftsmanship, bro!

If a character were to end up with a weapon like this towards the end of their character arc what kind of journey were they likely on?
Ready for the final boss 😅

@@KoaStudio welcome, bro
As a monster hunter fan and an enjoyer of ancient islander weaponry, I love this
🤙
monster hunter like indeed ! oh man ... if that have a longer handdle it would be so good
Im always jealous of some of your skills and the acses to the exotic materials you have, Then again we all have to start something and ive been getting better, But this looks really really good, you should as always be proud, also im curious, what sandpaper grit do you usually use?
Just time and dedication. I usually start with a 120 or 150 depending. Then move to 220 then 320. Depending on the piece and design I may go more.
@@KoaStudio interesting.. all the paper on my mashines are 100 or 80, and when i hand sand i tipicly start at 80..
I use 56 on my angle grinder if I have it otherwise 80 but hand/disc sanding I start no lower then 120.
@@KoaStudio you can get 56? Wow, ive heard of the legendary 30 grit but never got to use it.. this us news..
I get most of my sanding disks at Home Depot.
really cool channel, subscribing ong
🤙
What wood did you use, and what woods are typical in NZ? I assume you want something dense, hard, and strong, such as hickory?
I used Hawaiian Koa wood which is a hard wood. I am not actually as familiar with NZ hardwoods.. this pieces was more of a fun challenge piece for me than anything.
Looks like you definitely had fun with it! I know nothing about koa wood's impact resistance but it looks great.
Nice Harpoon.
very nice
club-staff sounds soo epic
What kind of slow setting epoxy do you use?
The slow setting I like is called liquid glass deep pour epoxy. 🤙
@@KoaStudioMahalo
Nice! I dig how you repurposed a broken weapon into two new weapons. They look really good

Cool
Those pieces of bone make me think its from either the flipper or the tail
Very possible
That is so dope
🤙
The old ways of fire hardening in the islands is like how you would prepare an imu/umu earth oven where you bury the clubs/spears in sand and burn a fire over it for hours then take it out clean it off then oil it.
Sorry brother to correct you but Rarotonga is in the Polynesian group. Their closest relatives are the Tahitians/Maori/Rapanui and Hawaii distant relatives being Tonga nd Samoa. There's a video online if I find the link I'll post it on here. It's a video of this hawaiian guy talking to people from the cooks and I've got to say Hawaiian nd Rarotongan reo/leo are very much alike especially the niihau dialect. Mahalo bradda✌
No need, I was corrected the first day it was published 🤣
You will see old rarotongan short clubs like these. You'll see spear heads used as short clubs.
