I think the vocal effect reflects the sickness associated with the ideology of Heavens Gate. Not a fan of the style but I get it. When it comes to this style of music I much prefer the offerings of Sopor Aeternus.

Personally I am a fan of good vocal effects if used properly. To me, these vocal effects works their magic, it really gives me goose bumps and almost make me weak to the knees. As if I am beeing hypnotized to a trance. As if a strange force is luring me in.
