she calls her "I Disagree" album "Post Genre" it's very good and every track on it is a multi-genre banger like this one. Concrete is the opener of that project.
Concrete is about changing genres from synth wave dark pop music to metal or just going full dark mode, when she says “some people like candy some people like coffee, but these lifeless flavors don’t satisfy me, I need young blood in my teeth” is her saying she’s quitting the pop music (candy) and normal type of music (coffee) and needs to try her hand at dark stuff (young blood) like she wants to dig her teeth into darker style music because the other stuff doesn’t satisfy her anymore :) that’s why there’s 2 genres going on here. She’s asking her fans to put the old her in the ground and turn her into a street to never be found again haha
You are definitely right about the pacing of this song to be a little quick. Her other songs like Anything Like Me off the same album spend a little more time diving into the heavier aspects of the sound. Her song Scary Mask does the heavy parts pretty well and they take up a good portion of the song, Say Cheese which came out on the EAT EP has some nice screams and is mostly pretty heavy, and the song EAT off the same EP (that was preformed at the Grammys a couple of years ago 👀) is also a fun ride. The reason you hear conflicting comments about poppy’s sound is that she started as a viral creepy internet sensation back in like 2016 when she made super bubblegum pop. A lot of people forgot about her after a couple of years and never even knew she went metal.
Yes, you are right in your theory, this song is from her third album 'I Disagree'. where most of the songs deals with the frustration of dealing with her former and extremally toxic label she was signed to prior to 2020. Poppy is an artist who genre has no meaning to her. She constantly with each release is shifting and changing her sound from Metal, Pop, Industrial, Folk-Rock, Alt-Rock, Dance and even a dabble into Trap. Her most brutal songs that are full of Harshes, are 'Say Cheese' from her 'Eat' EP and her cover of Kittie's 'Spit'.
Her music is less like a genre and more like a train. You hop on and it takes you to a bunch of different places. Yet her albums are still very cohesive. "I disagree" is a super dope album. Most of her songs don't shift as drastically as this one
I like how the song switches from mid-era Ministry, to Beach Boys, to a little bit of Queen, and country, like you said. I remember her saying she listened to a lot of Marylin Manson, NIN and industrial bands at the time.
I love this song, it gets better on each listen. Some songs don't "hit" the first time you hear it, and this one is like that dialled to the max -- it's jarring, almost incoherent flipping between genres. But then it clicks and the tonal changes just work. For a first listen you have done an amazing job on the analysis though, really picking up on the darkness that runs throughout. Great reaction!
def Queen vibes. she does great covers. its hilarious to see people reacting to Poppy when they start from now and go backwards. there are 3 songs off the top of my head "concrete" "X" and "bite your teeth" that were kawaii metal (like Babymetal). a metal song for you by Poppy would be "never find my place" you would love it i think. a lot of her lyrics in many of her songs are dark and point to an abuse. she is known for being involved with a bad boyfriend. that is a whole other story thats pretty interesting and involves another artist that went thru the same abuse.
There is a line from The Hitch-Hikers Guide To The Galaxy which perfectly sums up the juxtaposition of the upbeat music with the dark lyrics, it counterpoints the surrealism of the underlying metaphor. Thank you Douglas Adams!
Poppy mops the floor with Baby Metal and she has a lot depth to much of her lyrics .Poppy doesn't have a genre type she does but has more variey than the mainstream ever has. Poppy has been writing songs since she about 16 years old and put out her first music video back in early 2012 and has been ever changing since. Poppy is very intelligent and I am glad you said so as not all people get her.
Poppy’s referred to being post genre. The album “I Disagree definitely has a lot of experiments in some songs, but definitely a great album! She also just released a new single called New Way Out which Jordan Fish produced!
I really love your analysis of this great song, both musically and lyrically. The I Disagree album in total was a goodbye to her old pop persona and killing it off. The I Disagree track talks about burning everything to the ground. Her EP EAT is her heaviest solo project and my favorite. Say Cheese is great. Also check out her cover of Spit by Kittie!
Love your reaction 😀 if you like her scream skills you can check vids eat or spit, they don't have any music style shifts but they are diamonds in her crown 👑
It's jarring at first, but a lot less so once you have heard it a few times. It also works in the context of the album itself, which has a medley at the end which does various callbacks.
Concrete is such a weird song but i love it. If you want something really interesting and less bubblegum check out Fill The Crown by Poppy. Much more cohesive too.
She started off as slightly disturbed bubblegum pop, then went schizo from the back end of the Am I A Girl album through the Choke EP and I Disagree album, went full on metal for the EAT EP, then dialled it back a bit and made the stylistic handbrake turns less abrupt for the Flux album. The last album, Zig, disappointed me a little as she started using the dreaded autotune vocal effect and some of the songs were rather too mainstream for my liking.
Poppy has a sense of humor that she uses in some of songs. This isnt one of my favorites, i think you might like Play Destroy or Flux better than this. The Attic off her new album is my current pleasure.

I'm 51 years old and I LOVE Poppy. Especially Concrete. I never tire of it, it just gets better with every listen

She Mixed different Types of Music in a bunch of her Songs Falling In Reverse band does the same. I think Her Music is Cool 😎 ❤

Definitely check out her new song! Just came out, “New Way Out” so good!
Will do, it's on my schedule! :)

She just put out a new song yesterday, you should react to it

its similar to X how it goes from sweet to chaos. bite your teeth is a little like that
literally poppy.
poppy is god
Plss react to Eat by her!!

I need you to blind react to motorbike please
You stopped between each section. Then your judging it as if you actually experienced the transitions. You didnt
You clearly don't know how editing a reaction works.
I know how listening works
@@XNTYLER Sure 👍
