I try very hard to avoid political arguments online, and I won't start now, but I saw someone comment that this song was "anti-American". It is not. It is anti-war. And against a specific war, at that. And for that matter, it's not so much against the war, necessarily, but against how rich and powerful men decided the war should be fought, but the poor and working men were the ones who fought it, and killed and died.

This is one of the iconic songs that was a protest about Vietnam war. The rich families and political families were getting their children out of the draft. Everyone else got drafted and had to go to war.
They were actually from California. But they definitely honed in on the southern rock sound.

This is not really a southern anthem but anthem sang against the war in vietnam since many rich peoples children were able to evade the draft with their connections. Well or rather with their fathers connections (aka senators and wealthy businessman).

Yes - the Fortunate Sons were the ones able to avoid the draft, and the song is from the perspective of the soldiers who had to go. Easy to miss that reference because most people today take the meaning to be simply a class thing.
Great that Asia and BJ did pick up that it was a protest though.

When John Fogerty starts singing you know exactly who it is I came up in the 60s and 70s and CCR was one of the greatest bands of that era and still is to this day it's good to see all of the younger people enjoying their music
John Fogerty gets well-deserved praise for his songwriting, his arranging, his lead guitar playing, and others do too, but NOBODY had a *voice* like that.

I don´t really think is anti war song. Is more a some sort of anti stablishment song. The singer is not complaining about going overseas to fight, he´s complaining that only the poor is drafted while the sons of the rich can avoid military service thanks to their parents wealth.

I hear songs I've been listening to for half a century for the first time when I watch others react to them. You reactors give me something of a fresh ear, watching you hear it for the first time.

During the Vietnam war every young man received a draft card when they turned 18. They had no choice. At that time they didn't even know where Vietnam was. The wealthy people or those who knew the right people, could get their sons out of going to war. That war. was fought by middle class, poor and minority young men. That is what the song is about.
I turned 18 in 74 but in 73 they sent me draft notice, I sent it back with a long letter detailing all their bullshit and said come get me I ain’t doing it. They actually wrote my high school getting them to help. In the end I was told they would let me graduate a 1/2 credit short if I would sign up. I did but wrote and said I was only doing it because the war was winding down and there was a better chance I would be fighting for the IRA than in Vietnam.
@@scarletc.7055 I wouldn’t have gone. Me, as much as I would have been tempted to run, would have gone to jail and wrote my memoirs 🤦🏻😂 I hated the war and Nixon. If anything they must have felt I wasn’t worth the effort by that point. No way I was going to be he last person to die especially and unless Nixon’s kids were right beside me.

CCR was a well loved band and we ALL loved John Fogarty's voice. It made us feel alive. The dance floor was packed when those CCR songs played
When Forrest Gump’s helicopter first landed in Vietnam, this song was playing. This band is amazing. This is a total anti war song. It’s about regular people fighting rich men’s wars! Check out “You Put a Spell on Me” or “Long as I Can See the Light”. Can’t go wrong with these guys 🌺✌️

This Creedence's song also became very famous again in the 80s because it was part of the "Good Morning Vietnam" soundtrack.
When the band plays 'Hail to the Chief' they point the cannon at you.... Great thing to know and always remember. Only band in history to have 4 albums in the top 10 of the Billboard Top 100 Albums in a single year... which makes them the best and greatest American Bands ever.
I saw John Fogarty sing this song live in concert 2 days ago and he sounds just as good as he did here,The audience went wild even the younger members of the audience who never heard of CCR! By the way I really love your reactions!
I have always loved CCR and it has always amazed me that when you hear them, you get southern vibes but they are from Long Beach, CA.

Long Beach?!!! don't know where you got that. They are from the Bay Area, but were heavily influenced by southern folk blues.
The Fogerty brothers lived in El Cerrito but the band rehearsed and recorded in Berkeley, basically a two mile difference. Their rehearsal space Cosmo's Factory was a converted old auto shop next door to the original The North Face factory. I remember hearing first hand that The NF staff would be entertained when they rehearsed.
They recorded at Fantasy Studios a mile down the street.
No CCR is from North California the Bay Area, San Francisco.

The song had to deal with having wealthy parents or politically powerful parents who could keep their children out of the draft therefore keeping them out of the Vietnam War! In other words even if they got drafted they'd go to the Coast Guard or they'd be able to get some kind of desk job so they wouldn't be involved in any fighting!
It is unjust indeed, but lets be honest here. If i were a wealthy man, i would never let my children to go to any fu...ing war, it doesn´t matter if i have to buy all the jointed chief of staff. You would do exactly the same thing.
Like ex US president George W. Bush, who served in Texas Air National Guard from 1968 to 1972 and never seen combat in Vietnam. His daddy took care of everything.

My 2 year old grandson's name is Creedence. He was born with their song " Have you ever seen the rain" playing in the room
I saw John Fogerty (the singer and guitarist) a few years back and he still sounds great. It was a terrific show as he played a lot of Creedence hits as well as his solo hits. Creedence were a hit machine back in their time.

In the 90s when I was about 12 I received a Walkman for Christmas with the CCR greatest hits double album. I was annoyed and had no idea who they were. I even refused secretly to play it because I was so annoyed. A couple days later I did and wow.... Just wow.

I found one Creedence album in my parents' collection because of John Fogerty's comeback album in the 80s. Then I went to the vintage record store down the street and found two more Creedence albums. I walked around and laid on my back with headphones on just playing them over and over.
I'm listening to music 60 plus years they are definitely my favorite band. Their hits include Suzie Q, Proud Mary, Down on the Corner, Up around the Bend, Travelin Band, I heard it thru the Grapevine, I put a Spell on You is tremendous. This brings me back. My oldest brother joined at 17 became a recon marine in 67. My father an
air force officer signed for him. After being wounded twice the 2nd time losing the use of his arm. My father told me and my other brothers that we will never join the military. My brother took me to protest and I remember being tear-gassed at 9 years old running away through the campus. I look at the Iraq war and it tells me, nothing has changed. This song is still true today.

FYI: It started with 1950s Rock n Roll which evolved into Rock. Think of Rock like a gemstone having many facets. Each facet has a different name: Pop Rock, Acid Rock, Country Rock, Folk Rock etc.

Didn´t hear it neither in Apocalypse now, nor Platoon, nor Born on the 4th of july, nor Full Metal jacket... So in wich Viet nam movies are this tune played exactly? Forrest Gump yeah, but that is not a complete Viet nam war film.

CCR is one of the greatest bands ever. While they’re known for their short songs, their long songs are fire too. They did a ton of anti-war songs and this was one. The lead singer, John Fogerty, was also the writer of the majority, if not all, of their music. They have so much soul and strength in their music. I absolutely dig it.
During the Vietnam war, the poor unfortunate ppl were the ones drafted to go fight, if your were a fortunate son, i.e a senators son, a rich son, a military officer son you were able to avoid being drafted....

As an Old Vietnam Vet this song told 95% of our story. Some were Drafted some like me joined (Marines). I really had a lot of respect for the draftees because most of them knew they were going to NAM and didn't think twice about it. They did there duty for there Country and there Country shit on all of us.

As a DJ in the summer 1969, literally, on Armed Forces Radio, in the Phillipines, 'Magic Carpet Ride' was the first song I played on the very first show I ever rocked. "MAD MAN MIKE, AND HIS MARVELOUS MUSIC MACHINE"!

Yes it was in Forest Gump and a lot of Vietnam era movies. One of their songs you may have heard covered by Tina Turner is "Proud Mary", you should check that out and "Born on the Bayou"

This song is an anti -Vietnam war anthem. The sentiment at the time was that only the poor were getting drafted, hence the title of the song. This song could be considered Anti-American because it is dividing people by rich and poor. Remember that all the officers were college educated (rich) young men. This song was very controversial at the time. Is it Patriotic or un-patriotic? It depends on how you feel about war or defending your country. Should we have been in Vietnam? An 18 year old boy is going to have a different view than an 18 year old girl or a parent of a draft age son. I remember when my oldest brother got his draft card in the mail. Scarey! By then the war was winding down and we were getting out and he didnt have to go.
I personally do not think it's Anti-American to be against being drafted into an unjust war. My older brother signed up for two terms in Vietnam, and came home with a Purple Heart and a bad case of PTSD for his troubles that still plagues him today. So much for his bravery. He was spit on when he finally came home.
This song is about injustice. We were NOT "defending our country." My draft board yanked me out of a happy life in 1965, and changed everything forever. Now, 56 years later, I still haven't made it back home. "Home" no longer exists - it's just a distant memory.
Definitely NOT anti-American. Just anti-draft. The rich officers were there voluntarily. They enlisted on there own. As did some others, but most were drafted and HAD to go whether they wanted to or not. There may be some just causes for war, Vietnam was not one of them.

This was played in Forest Gump when he went to Vietnam with his buddy Bubba. John Forgerty was trying to say how how only poor and ethnic boys were mostly drafted for war. Not one single senators son went, not many rich boys whose daddy's could buy them out of it went. He was not that fortunate, not a fortunate son

You know for a band from San Francisco, CCR sure had a back woods, black water, swampy sound to them in most of their songs. They always gave me a Louisiana Bayou vibe. Even had a hit song 'Born On A Bayou'. Have you ever heard Bad Moon Rising? Many of their songs were politically inspired, anti-war songs, but all very good laid back, beer drinking songs.

Creedence Clearwater revival always reminds me of the eight track tape. There was nothing more hilarious than when they paused the song to change tracks.

They are not from the South but were born and raised in the San Fransisco area, though they composed music they thought would sound like it came from Louisiana. I was just a 10 or 12 year old kid when this came out and it was definitely an anti-Vietnam war song. On the Canadian prairies where I grew up CCR was _THE_ number one rock band in the late 1960s and early 1970s! They are still a staple of the Classic Rock stations here today! Jangling electric guitars like this were music to our ears, quite literally. Still love CCR today and listen to them regularly! There were virtually no guitar pedals back then, so you really had to have good tone in your fingertips when you played electric guitar! You two have got to liberate yourselves from the lesser forms of music popular today and find out why the baby boomers don't listen to anything but Classic Rock! 🎸👌🎶😉💖😎🎸
