- In this video we'll look at how to install a Minecraft Server on OpenMediaVault 5.
The process is pretty straightforward and only take a couple of minutes since we're going to install a Minecraft server using Portainer Stacks in OMV5.
The full instructions will be on my website:

Just wanted to give a big thumbs up, don't ever stop doing what you do man. You are one of the few on youtube who break stuff down and make it easier for us idiots who don't have a complete understanding of docker and portainer natively.. many of us haven't "grown up" running linux and it's offshoots, and it's like another language to us. Thanks for your vids :)
Works great on a PC with OMV, Docker-compose and Portainer. I've put multiple servers in one stack-script...
Great job on video. I prefer using the method you had used by building the stack. Much simpler than manually setting it up
If you are like me, and you want to be able to issue minecraft-server commands from portainer, you have to add these lines to the stack in the minecraft-server block "stdin_open: true" and "tty: true". Then you can click on the running container and click attach to run commands in the server.
2GB isn't enough for newest versions since 5+ years. Recommended amount of ram is 4GB and extend when needed.
I came across your videos recently and they are great.
I was wondering if you could do a video on either setting up docker to be able to host 2 minecraft servers or a how to assign the ip address to the container in portainer.
You can setup an additional minecraft server pretty easily, but you would have to change the port that the second (or third, or whatever) server runs on I think.
Works, great learning experience. Thank you
Can you take another video for a Bedrock Server ? for playing with W10 , ps4 xbox and switch version !
I have tried to make a bedrock version with no luck. I can make a java version without any problems. Would love another video on a bedrock version.
good tutorial thanks very much!
im new to this container thing and got a question, whats de difference between a stack an just a normal container?
Basically nothing. Just different ways to deploy
Hi, thank you for this tutorial! Working fine. I would like to ask - how to run two separate servers on the same machnie? Im using omv5. I would like to run one server for Creative mode and the 2nd on Survival mode. Pls help! :) Best Regards from Poland!🇵🇱
Could you please do a bedrock version I’m struggling to get mine running from docket folder it’s driving me insane I can’t be far off but it just won’t boot
thanks!! Your videos are awesome!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much for this video, I was able to get a server up and running in OMV4. I have liked & subscribed.
I am completely new to portainer & OMV and I am trying to figure out how to use the auto pause option. When I add the option it causes the server not to start because of the watchdog. I added the option to set max tick time to -1, but that doesn't work either. I tried switching networks from host to bridged mode, but the server refuses to start in anything but host mode with the auto pause disabled. Any idea how I can get this to work? I've been googling without much success.
do you think it would be possible to have docker run geyserMC and pointing to the minecraft running in docker making it possible for bedrock clients to play on the same server?
Good afternoon, I have a question. I have deployed the minecraft server, but when I try to access it, it throws an error "unable to verify the username." Can you somehow fix this error? It seems that the server complains about the pirated version of minecraft.
Hi. Works great. How do i access Minecraft from internet? My daughter wants to play with friends.
Not 100% but think you would need to give them your external ip and the port it uses only trouble is your external ip changes time to time unless you pay for a static ip with your isp
Hey tried this and it was up and running on the server but unable to connect with windows 10 edition and couldn’t connect with xbox either I even port forwarded on my router any ideas ?
do u know what's the speed like if I were to install it on my rasberry pi 4 4gb ram server?
Hello, I tried to make my minecraft server on OMV on a RPI4/4Gb but when i deploy the stack I got this error : standard_init_linux.go:211: exec user process caused "exec format error"
What does it mean ? I'm kinda new with Rpi and OMV 5
It may not work on ARM Processors.
also wanted to add, I was having permission denied errors trying to run a bedrock server, until I added /minecraft to the end of the folder path after the word data like this:
volumes:
- /srv/dev-disk-by-label-Files/Minecraft:/data/minecraft
once I did that then the server started running with no issues.
hmm, on a second look, it's getting it's info from someplace else on the system, it loads the server, but it's all default info not what I changed in the server.properties.. I gotta find where that hidden minecraft directory this thing created is.
Would it be possible to do a bedrock edition to this ? I’ve ended up using Ubuntu but would love this in a Docker also could you go through some commands eg editing the minecraft server after deployment
hub.docker.com/r/itzg/minecraft-bedrock-server
Using this method everything basic works. I can see the output from the server in the logs, but I'd like to be able to run server commands while it is live, from portainer. Is this possible?
If you are like me, and you want to be able to issue minecraft-server commands from portainer, you have to add these lines to the stack in the minecraft-server block "stdin_open: true" and "tty: true". Then you can click on the running container and click attach to run commands in the server.
Great video again.
I have installed over a rasp4 and everything ok, but something is wrong and I get the message "Failed to verify username". I've changed ONLINE_MODE to FALSE, but doesn't work.
Any clues please?
It still has to validate your account, so you'll need one of those.
@@DBTechYT Thanx a lot. Worked perfect.
How would I add custom worlds?
Great tutorial but now how do my friends connect to it from outside my network?
You'd have to forward port 25565 from your modem/router to your docker server's IP address
@@DBTechYT thank you!!
Everything worked perfect, but i don't know how to acces the Server console
Pls Help
There's a link in the description that takes you to the instructions on my website. There's a link to the original source compose information in that blog post. From there, you can find the full documentation available on the container. In that documentation there's a whole section called "Interacting with the server"
"full instructions" are missing, is that link correct?
The link is correct. I had to fix something
I have minecraft factorio and dst can u suggest a few others so i can host for friends or lan partys
i'm trying to install but i get the error "standard_init_linux.go:211: exec user process caused "exec format error" can you help me?
It means it isn't compatible with your processor. I'm guessing you have an Arm processor?
I set the memory to 4 gb with the installation, it is possible to set is to 8 without installing the server again?
You'll have to redeploy the container if you want to change the settings. It SHOULD keep your current world as long as you don't change the mount volume/path
@@DBTechYT thx, I will try.
Great videos. Keep doing that.
Maybe put version at latest instead of snapshot
just some editing feedback: in the zoomed in scenes, please don't move the frame around... that made me ridiculously dizzy. (it's just one shot, but still. if that was on purpose, please don't xD )
Sometimes I gotta move the frame around when I'm zoomed in. And, after millions of views on my videos, you're the first person to have any complaint like this
@@DBTechYT I think this one happened accidentally, it's at 3:40, the frame zooms out slowly. It's barely noticeable, that's probably what messed with my brain
I tried using the stack and the command, but both give me the same error. "standard_init_linux.go:211: exec user process caused "exec format error" anyone have any ideas?
It isn't compatible with your processor
@ DB Tech i have been working on this for hours how do you turn off the mobs on the freaking server? i got it to go creative i just wanna build and stuff keeps blowing up or breaking things >.>
i also did
force-gamemode=false
allow-nether=true
enforce-whitelist=false
gamemode=0
broadcast-console-to-ops=true
enable-query=false
player-idle-timeout=0
difficulty=peaceful
spawn-monsters=false
anybody help me?
Only thing I can think of is to go here and see what options are available, but I think you might have done that already: hub.docker.com/r/itzg/minecraft-server/
I am totally new at this, I just installed it this morning, but I think you need to add a line that says "- SPAWN_MONSTERS=false" to your stack
Any way to add datapacks to the install?
Not sure if this is the proper way, but this worked somehow;
Downloaded datapacks from vanillatweaks.net (Xisuma of Hermitcraft)
Mounted the Samba share: sudo mount -t cifs -o credentials=/home//.smbcredentials ///minecraft /media/
Copied the files with the following format (insert your own file structure): scp /home//Downloads/VanillaTweaks_c511395.zip root@:/srv/dev-disk-by-label-Silo/Minecraft/world/datapacks
Restart minecraft stack
The directions for that are listed in the site with all the extra options. You can find the information in the blog post linked in the description.
Thanks for this video! I have a quick question as I'm new to minecraft and my daughter has asked me to install one. So I took up the challenge! :) from the github, it says that if client is from windows or mobile to use this image --> itzg/minecraft-bedrock-server. So can I change it to that? and second question is, can you or anyone able to send me the link for the client installation file for windows? the one that is on official minecraft seems only for mojang. thanks
You should be able to download the Windows application directly from the Minecraft website.
As far as installing the server, you should be able use the same Stack that is on my website, but you'll need to change a few things.
First, you have to change the image from this: image: itzg/minecraft-server to this: image: itzg/minecraft-bedrock-server
You'll also need to change the port from 25565 to 19132
Outside of that you'll want to look at the environmental variable that are available to make any additional changes that you might want to make.
I just launched a Bedrock server with this setup: imgur.com/a/MEK8UpU
Hi how do i change the game type to creative ?
I am totally new to this, but I think what you need is a line in your stack that says "- MODE=creative"
im tried use in bedrock and dont work :C
standard_init_linux.go:219: exec user process caused: exec format error
i used raspberry pi 4
This is for desktop processors, not Raspberry Pi devices.
hehehe need tutorial for OMV7, sorry for my bad english
Hi, Excellent tutorial. Can you kindly post another video going through exactly the same installation process however for Bedrock Server edition for followers who haven't bought a Minecraft Java version license but a Minecraft Windows 10 version license please? (Understand that a further license needs to be bought should either be owned already but not both and they're considered two completely different products where licensing is concerned). Thank you.
Tried the following without success:
---
version: "2"
services:
minecraft-server:

The stack say's running but has errors:

Here's what worked for me
Everybody would love all of variables like the server.propreties file, to change what we like and dont forget any thing
All of the available information should be here: github.com/itzg/docker-minecraft-server
@@DBTechYT thank you !
@@DBTechYT I dont know why variables doesnt work
I prefer deploying using Stacks
