One thing about Modrinth I really like is their maven api. A developer can easily make a mod interact with other mods by simply adding a dependency from Modrinth directly, I don't have to download the mod/hope the mod has uploaded their mod to a specific maven repository.
Amateurs... I'm playing on minecraft pe, the marketplace has no bugs no Trojans no glitches no bugs and no viruses... I need not care for such measly websites...
Honestly, I hope modrinth gets more traction. I absolutely love the site. Unlike CF, whose performance and ease of use in my experience has been terrible, I had no problem updating and editing my projects on modrinth. Modrinth's design is sleek and easy on the eyes, while I still flashbang myself on CF. For some reason, CF still uses their legacy site for alot of pages (sometimes I ask myself why they're calling it the legacy version if they're still using it). CF always tries to push their launcher and makes me wait to start my download but modrinth just straight up lets me download what I want. The only reason why I'm still using CF truth be told, is that CF projects get more visibility because of its bigger user base.
When I ran Better MC (Forge) BM3 with complementary shaders (yes I didn't get malware, this was a couple days ago.) I got 80/90 fps with freezing frames on Curseforge launcher. @@wubsuf honestly thats not possible because after launching minecraft nothing seperates the launchers anymore. You need to go to the website and go to files and find the version you need

As a person who uses mods i think you did very well by spreading the word. Honestly it wont be bad to do this sort of informational videos about minecraft in general. This both alerts people of important news and gets you some much deserved views. Perhaps do it more often :)
The key takeaway here is that competition is good. Whether people want to stick with CF or try something new, the fact that there are viable options will always be better than putting your eggs all in one basket. I'm still waiting for a serious competitor to Nexus. ModDB is something, but it has its own wealth of problems.
Modrinth is nice, its extremely user friendly and offers a wide range of filters. It also makes it clear what dependencies a mod needs and whether its loaded on forge, fabric or both

Hats off to everyone involved with Modrinth! Modrinth is exactly what modded MC needs, and I'm excited to see their launcher progress until it's ready for a full release! I've checked out the Modrinth page, and have not had luck finding anywhere to donate to the project. Is there a link I'm missing, or do they not have such a way to contribute financially?
I already did lol,it's really faster when it comes to downloading. On CurseForge when you download a mod online, you have a 5 seconds timer. On Modrinth you just click download and that's it!
It was already bad enough when mods were split between game versions, and it became worse when Fabric released, and mods started to become split between the 2 mod loaders. Now, while competition is good to prevent the mod distribution platforms from getting too scummy, like you said, it will make creating your dream modpack even harder now that mods will also become split between mod platforms.
Fabric was made because of some forge modloader issues or coding specifics that hindered some modders. Now there is also another mod loader called Quilt with some mods being Quilt only as well. Thankfully, this one has support for 99% of fabric mods so it isn't really an issue in terms of low mod author use. I was also very very hesitant about moving from Forge, but Sodium + Iris mods has been such an upgrade for me. Many essential type mods and Fabric/Quilt equivalent versions of other favorite mods are out now that the switch is easier to try. Another big plus was that MultiMC has support for all modloaders, making installation super easy. Now Im back to waiting for some mods to update to newer MC versions like before lol
Lot of outdated / misinformation + explaining for 3 minutes why something is bad to end up in a sentence to explain why in fact it was logical for CF to do it, isn't the best way to prevent useless hate yeah
@@LineOfThy i think you need to realise that you don't make money from not making a logical choice. Restricting their API wasn't especially ideal but between that and knowing all devs would have earned at least 30 to 50% less money as one myself, sometime you need to make a restrictive choice, and talking for 3 minutes of how bad this idea was before saying "oh btw i said that but yeah it's true that without that they would have lost a huge part of their main money making method, so they were kinda forced to do that" is only a way to antagonize CF for no reason. Saying modrinth don't do this kind of stuff is stupid since modrinth benefits way more of being able to use mods on CF than the other way around, and I doubt that CF love the idea of not only losing money but also giving free money to concurrent for no other reason than "some peoples will find that nice"
I'm planning to continue using Curseforge for a few months. Once they've significantly sabatoged themselves, all the mods I use should move to Modilith and I'll switch without losing any of them.
Another example was the exodus of modders moving from forge to fabric; to be honest I think this all stinks, while I understand both sides rationale it doesn't change the fact that players are also getting screwed over by this mess and this spillover of this feud between developers and platforms does nothing but force people to take sides and (maybe it's me just being selfish and petty but) that is the last thing I want to deal with when I just want to enjoy a game with my favorite mods.
There isn't any real exodus. ONE person and a small clique split off, and they themselves were so toxic that fabric didn't last more than a few years before its entire community (such as it is) split again into quilt. Every serious content mod for minecraft is on Forge. The forge community is about minecraft, the fabric community is about how much it hates forge.
For a user you're getting effectively double the Ads as a result. Before Modrinth eventually gets owned by someone it will be fine. Then we just have 2 Curseforges. Modrinth is less then a 1 piece of tissue paper on a serious wound. There isn't anything wrong with standing up for yourself, but it is just going to make everything worse still unless society grows and stops going off the deep end.
I'll second that. There was a lot of backlash at the beginning (Forge is evil, go to Fabric!), but my experience with Fabric has been... disappointing to say the least. I personally never used Fabric because their lack of experience did not make me want to try it. Rightfully so. A couple weeks ago, I tried creating a Fabric profile to use MiniHUD (which discontinued support for Forge) and low and behold, Fabrig is plagued with compatibility issues between the loader, the API and to mods themselves. I play in 1.20.1 and the optifabric mod for 1.20.1 has compatibility issue with the latest available version of the loader and the API for 1.20.1 so I had to try older versions of them until I found a working version... Talk about user experience. Result of it: went back to Forge and I use the fabric profile only when I need miniHUD, I mark what I need and switch back to the forge install.
@@superslash7254 the fabric modding community is very much alive. A lot of insanely good performance and content mods are only available for fabric (and via modrinth). And forge is still a legal (and technical) minefield from a devs POV. Forge is IMO just... worse and they should have just discontinued it after Fabric gained traction.
as a minecraft launcher developer i can say that it is much easier to work with modrinth, cause their api is just very good documented and i dont need to get in contact with them to get fuckin api key. i just wanna get modpack list from your website!

Overwolf, the parent company of CurseForge, really is just becoming the next EA. They try to monopolize pretty much any community they see, any try to advertise slow-running, required software to boot, all for the user experience to be hurt and damage communities.
And everyone wondered why the KSP community REBELLED when the devs announced CurseForge as the official place to get mods. NOW you see why we hated it.
Sodium has gone back to using CF, the notice is no longer on the page and their latest update was Feb 8 2024. Also none of this was Curseforge's doing its all Overwolf, no one wanted to use the CF app because it required Overwolf to run along side it and that app has a detrimental effect on peoples PC's so they launched a "stand alone" version that in fact just hid Overwolf from popping up and you can still see it running in the system tray.
Well, Modrinth is also more Fabric-heavy and encourages people to use Fabric, because it's more modern and most devs on there use it, while CurseForge literally has Forge in the name.
@@radstevee True hopefully it does cause a move to fabric though I wish all mod creators could get together and switch to fabric but I get that will never happen
I would totally go with Modrinth, the problem is that all the mods I want to play with are on...CurseForge. A lot of the mods I like are older or inactive mods like Railcraft aren't on Modrinth sadly, and in my opinion, that is the main reason why people were more reluctant to switch to Modrinth, until CurseForge got hacked. Now I'm hoping that more mods move to Modrinth so more people can access the mods they love.
I recently started playing modded Minecraft for the first time, and I had no idea any of this was happening on Curseforge. Hopefully all my favorite mods find their way onto Modrinth.
Just realized how terrible of a cycle this is that I hope gets broken. A Site becomes terrible, people leave to an upcoming competitor, that gets big and the game starts all over again.
It’s the natural tech cycle. 1. Be a pioneer. 2. Grow to monopolize the market first. 3. Pay off your debt. 3.1 Abuse of your monopoly position to extract as much money as possible of your userbase 4. Profit ? 5. Either you squeezed the lemon too much and die or people keep using the platform and you are now profitable and generating steady profits
thank you for this video, i've been looking for months for a legit alternative to curseforge. Kudos to the Sodium authors for making the move to something new and hopefully better.
I have been using curseforge for years now just because "it was good enough". Even though I constantly was complaining how slow(more like clunky) and unresponsive it is, it did the job. I should clarify that I play on an older version(1.12.2), so some mod distributing services might not have mods for the version. Today I tried Modrinth and it is a blessing. So fast, responsive and the collection of mods isn't much less than CF's. Additionally, there's this stuff that was discussed in this video, so I think I will switch to Modrinth altogether

@@Lusc1nt good thing when they decide to fucking work! I'm here to play minecraft not debug code and figure out why your mod isn't working as it should!
@@ligma6992 you act as if things were not objectively worse before fabric and quilt came out. quilt came out due to the fabric owners being actively hateful towards specific groups of people. fabric was simply better than forge, and quilt has owners that are simply better people than fabric. the shake-ups needed to happen a long time ago, but its a good thing its happening now because things will actually start working when the developers of the modding platforms actually take interest in their playerbase. forge is inherently built on janky shit and hard to work with, fabric is substantially better, and quilt is better than fabric in terms of the product and the developers. from a technical standpoint, the transition off of forge was the single greatest thing to happen to minecraft modding. you simply cannot reasonably do all the things the transition to fabric allowed on forge. the depreciation of forge is inevitable. if minecraft continues to have a large modding community forge simply will cease to be a viable option for the general userbase in the next 5 years. there is little incentive to keep developing with forge unless you specifically want to play older minecraft versions, and the wealth of mods from newer versions only keeps growing. there was a LONG period before things made the jump from 1.12 but when they finally did they really picked up steam. fairly soon larger mods will stop supporting both forge and fabric, a lot of good mods already dont support forge, and most of the random mods dont support forge. its only really the bigger mods that have a large playerbase that have a reason to include both but that reason is shrinking as the months pass.
That's a funny range of versions for a so called golden age. Minecraft Beta was the golden age of mods. Titans like Twilight Forest, Mo Creatures, Pistons, Industrial Craft, and so much more.
Seeing modrinths add revenue policy really makes me want to see them open up to other games as well. The sims modding community joined and left Curse ages ago, and generally get funding via patreon, while stardew is just spread all over the internet. Having a mod hosting site that actually supports it's creators would be HUGE, and I know quite a few modders who would jump at the chance.
Interesting video, but there is a flaw with the video that I think needs to be addressed. You state at the end of your video that you do not want people to spread negativity regarding curseforge and instead spread positivity regarding the competition. However, if that is the goal, then your thumbnail directly goes against that by listing curseforge as evil. Yes, it is a attention grabbing thumbnail, but I'm sure there are ways to make good thumbnails without going against your own stated goal?
If you are looking for another curseforge alternative I suggest the technic launcher. They have been around since 2011 and have a great library of old school modpacks
I never knew about these mods. My knowledge ended on Optifine some 6 yeas ago. Recently I tried playing again, but my old PC isn't good anymore. But there's hope :)
Yes, there is definetely hope. There have been many incredible optimization mods made recently (sodium, lithium, starlight, ferritecore, modernfix, to name a few) that greatly improve the games performance making it run with so much less resources
Sodium is utterly insane for optimization of modern versions, and if you want something to make older versions just a tinge better than they used to be, Ears, despite being primarily a Fabric mod that modifies skin rendering for extra features, also has Forge backports that let 1.9+ skins render in 1.8 and earlier. Both of these are entirely clientside, and don't effect gameplay outside of what the individual lone player sees, and thus could be used even on Vanilla servers without issue or tripping anticheat.
Quit using optifine. Its trash and not worth the download. Start using sodium with iris for example and youll see that even your old pc will hit enjoyable framerates.
One thing I'd be careful about, Modrinth's 100% ad revenue isn't how reality works. Somehow the site needs to run and make money to support it. Seeing a 100% is often not trustworthy in the long term, it is too good to be true. It has the energy of someone trying to out compete so they can be the one screwing over others.

Also Modrinth is way faster than CurseForge
Yes, but files and stuff, and I’m too lazy to do all dat (I will prob switch tho)
modrinth is also actually used for setting mod dependencies for mods developed on top of the fabric api
While not used by the average player, the API is top-notch as well. I only use ~20 mods, but get all of them from Modrinth, with the exception of Litematica and WorldEdit because they are not available there.

@@sylv512 "anymore"? A lot of it just flat out isn't true to begin with. For instance the claim that viruses got spread through compromised curseforge accounts, which just isn't true. The virus was designed to spread to other .jar files on your system so mod developers, who tend to download and use a lot of .jar files, would get infected, and then the virus would copy itself into their in-development versions of the mods before upload.
It was phrased like it was an issue with curseforge and their security, but it wasn't even remotely related to that. It'd be like blaming walmart because you got the flu there from other customers.
It's important to note that the api changes are fully at the will of mod developers. They can choose whether their mods can be downloaded through third party launchers.
They still require all mods in a pack to be from Curseforge, though. No mixing in downloads from Modrinth are allowed.

I love when monopoly businesses reach their end. Why cant a business just be good and not ruin its self like this. Its really not hard to not squeeze every last penny out of people you are offering services to.

All capitalism is guaranteed to become the story of Icarus; they fly too close to the sun, burn up, and then crash into the ocean below. But they haven't even succeeded in having a completely locked down monopoly yet. Somehow they're already burning up before they could even bleed the community dry, and idk if it's incompetence on their part or a surprising amount of awareness from the community.
No but seriously. The most likely reason for AT performing better than CF is because when launching Minecraft, CF makes some errors (learned this from Lunapixel.) AT supposedly makes less errors than CF so the performance is better.
My favourite CurseForge bug is that mods you can see on the webpage are not necessarily on the app. The "Falling Tree Mod" (mine a whole tree by breaking the lowest + faster leaf decay) for example. It just straight up, doesn't find it. Even when I click "open this mod in the app" on the webpage doesn't work...
A little late but it’s because of how the version works, it attempts to install the newest version of the mod to your curseforge, so if you have a 1.18.2 instance, it might attempt to download a 1.20 version to the modpack, not working. You need to go to the website and go to files and find the version you need

Now Im back to waiting for some mods to update to newer MC versions like before lol

thanks for making this video, i heard curseforge was bad but i didnt know how deep it went.
Curse forge isn’t bad it’s just the hacker using malware from it
The moderators are also kinda unfriendly. At least mine... I tried uploading a modpack, and they were not really friendly
@@superslash7254 as small as it was it had some good mods that dropped support for forge. But yeah, modding community should be about the game.
Forge is IMO just... worse and they should have just discontinued it after Fabric gained traction.

forge is inherently built on janky shit and hard to work with, fabric is substantially better, and quilt is better than fabric in terms of the product and the developers. from a technical standpoint, the transition off of forge was the single greatest thing to happen to minecraft modding. you simply cannot reasonably do all the things the transition to fabric allowed on forge.
the depreciation of forge is inevitable. if minecraft continues to have a large modding community forge simply will cease to be a viable option for the general userbase in the next 5 years. there is little incentive to keep developing with forge unless you specifically want to play older minecraft versions, and the wealth of mods from newer versions only keeps growing. there was a LONG period before things made the jump from 1.12 but when they finally did they really picked up steam.
fairly soon larger mods will stop supporting both forge and fabric, a lot of good mods already dont support forge, and most of the random mods dont support forge. its only really the bigger mods that have a large playerbase that have a reason to include both but that reason is shrinking as the months pass.

One thing to note is downloading mods on modrinth is so much nicer because you get the download instantly, not 5 seconds
