There is no greater story representing the lives of the faceless than this one I think. And yet… why? Why does it have so much power I don’t understand. He’s like- an anti- martyr - countless people have pointed out that he was the reason they started to turn their lives around, so what did he do different? What made him so special that even I tear up. He turned me around, gave me a boost, and told me life was worth living… through suicide? I do not know the answer, other than that I am eternally grateful for him. I hope his family understands that even though the pain of losing him is great, he has moved mountain in thousands of lives around the world when no one else could. We owe that to you sky king. I reached the point 2 weeks ago I had the gun in hand, and I ended up calling MilitaryOneSource out of the thoughts of my sister and 2 recently passed friends.
I went to the VA for a mental evaluation out of their recommendation, I got told I was faking depression and anxiety, even after I gave them all the receipts.
7 years of seeing the worst of humanity, gas attack victims, shrapnel victims, the worst one I remember was a 6-7 year old girl, back when Syria was gassing their civilians back in 17-18, she hid in a room that took an explosive, and mangled her entire right half. The most horrific thing wasn't when she was rolled in, it wasn't when we where trying to fix shredded and destroyed parts of her body, nor when she finally passed on, it was having to tell the mother the death of her daughter. In a world of madness when so many people want to go out with a bang and take others with them out of spite, Sky King just wanted to do some barrel rolls.
Whenever there's tragedy like this, we often wish we could have met the person, wish that we could have said something, perhaps stopped them, but the thing that's different with this one is that he said it himself that he knows a lot of people loved him and a lot of people were going to be saddened by his loss. Those are the words of a broken man who has come to accept how broken he really is. I don't think there was ever saving a man who was that far gone.
I just wish I could have at least given the poor guy a hug. I know there's no telling him everything is going to be alright. Just to wish him the best on one final flight.

Beautifully written, and this is the biggest of the myriad reasons why I was so drawn to his story. Because in a world, or culture, that tends to see many young angry men at the end of their rope, as it were, commit heinous violence, Bebo was different. Like you mentioned, also beyond repair, at the end of his own rope, (which I believe tragically is never true - I believe even the most broken can heal), his true colors came out. His soul was kind, open, and playful. He didn't want to harm a soul - and facing his own self harm, he had a blast. And oh the irony that his kindness, openness and playfulness was tragically overridden by his despair. So happy, so sad. One helluva captivating story.

Bullsh!t. Heros give their lives for those they love, even for strangers. Heros got the balls to play the hand they've been dealt in life. Only cowards f*ck up the emotions of their wives, family and friends for life!
Hero? more like a selfish prick... he is skyprick.

As someone who also struggles with depression and suicidal ideation calling him a hero seems pretty tone deaf and insensitive. There's hardly a day that goes by where I don't dream about doing something similar. I want to right this fucking second but im not going to give into the urge and give up on myself , at least not today. I'm sure he also battled with similar feelings. He sounded like a good person that cared about his impact and effect on other people but idolizing him for what he did is just wrong and I think he would be the first to agree with me. He is not a hero, his story may have touched and had a positive effect on many people. But idolizing this guy for giving into the darkness and decided to end his life is just wrong and someone seeing or hearing this that is also struggling could get pushed over the edge and decide to end their life as well possibly in a similar fashion so the can be remembered as a hero to.
Even though I don't know his story I know why he did it and I feel terrible for the people that knew and loved him and gave to wake up every morning with this giant gaping whole in their lives. I know they would agree with the sentiment that we should not be looking up to him for what he did. Sure it's an incredible story but what happened was a trajedy and a great example of how our society sometimes idolizes mental illness. Really he did a terrible thing that day, it's great that so many people are saying are saying that seeing what he did changed their lives for the better but we cannot discount the unfathomable amount of trauma that was caused to the people that knew and loved him.
The main if not only reason I don't do something similar right this second is because I know what it would do to the people around me. No matter how absolutely horrendous I feel and how much I want the pain to stop I try to remember if I were to give in and kill myself I would be responsible for causing everyone I know and love to feel just as bad. I will suffer so they don't have to.
This sounds absolutely rediculos to say especially because I hate bragging/boasting. But I and every other person that struggles with depression, hopelessness and the desire to end their life should be be called heros. Every time the pain and the desire to give up and end it all goes through our minds and we say no we are heros. This guy was a hero up until the moment he gave up. Every day until that one where he stuck it out despite the pain and sorrow and desire for oblivion he was a hero. But the moment he made that final decision to kill himself he lost that title. Heroes are the people that refuse to give up even when giving up feels like the best and only option. The people that endure the pain and suffering rather then passing it on to their loved ones, those are heros.
And no I don't really consider myself a hero whatsoever but I know that even if it seems like I can't do anything right in life at least I know I'm making the right call by choosing to not give up and living another day.
I guess I'm just worried that some suicidal person is gonna read this and see how everyone seems to be praising and revering this guy for what in reality was the worst and last mistake of his life. As someone that has come to almost idolize and fantasize about suicide in addition to stupidly attempting it. I honestly feel like I'm just existing, floating through life waiting for something to happen for someone to give me permission to kill myself and tell me that it's ok. Too many people here are essentially doing just that. Again I don't want to discount the comments that say that experiencing this event was a real turning point for them and changed their life. That is amazing and I wish it had done something similar to me. But we need to be clear about the reality which is that this was horrible trajedy and that when you kill yourself you don't just cease to exist even if that is what you desire. That there are people out there that care for and love you. I don't care or know who you are but I know this. Killed yourself is the worst thing you can do to the people that care about you. So just remember that if you are snuggling out there like myself and just want everything to end, try your hardest to power through and if you don't want to do it for yourself do it for the people you care about because there is a good chance they have gone through this dilemma as well and that means that they were willing to suffer through rather the burden you with their suicide so the least you can do is return the favor.

@@3frogman I'm not saying you can't call or see him as a hero. Only giving my opinion and personal experience on why I think people shouldn't. I'm also not saying that he shouldn't be remembered and loved. But the undeniable fact is that suicide is devastating to the people around you in a way that is almost incomprehensible and while understand, likely better than most, why he did it, I personally believe that idolizing people that do (excluding instances like Dr assisted for terminal illness) could encourage others that like myself sit on the edge of a knife where all it takes is a slight just of wind to push them over the edge and say "fuck it I'm done".

I was at SeaTac that day waiting to go home from working in Seattle. My flight was right before he taxied off to the run way. It is crazy to know that went down. Hell it's crazy to know we were the same age. Even crazier I even bought stuff from his wives bakery they owned in Coos Bay.
