  • Here, Dr Ajai R. Singh sings the first ghazal from the Deewan-e-Ghalib and explains the 1st sher with its modern relevance.
He also explains how Ghalib is a treasure of the Indian sub-continent.
    The Ghazal
Naqsh fariyādī hai kis kī shoḳhi-e-tahrīr kā
Kāġhzī hai pairahan har paikar-e-tasvīr kā
    Kaav kāv-e-saḳht-jānī hā.e-tanhā.ī na pūchh
Sub.h karnā shaam kā laanā hai jū-e-shīr kā
    Jazba-e-be-iḳhtiyār-e-shauq dekhā chāhiye
Sīna-e-shamshīr se bāhar hai dam shamshīr kā
Agahī dām-e-shanīdan jis qadar chāhe bichhā.e
Mudda.ā anqā hai apne ālam-e-taqrīr kā
Bas-ki huuñ 'Ghālib' asīrī meñ bhī ātish zer-e-pā
Mū-e-ātish diida hai halqa merī zanjīr kā

    Naqsh fariyadi ...
Verse 1 : (outer)Appearance depends on creators mood.
Verse 2 Each appearance is temporary.(implying that soul is is core and eternal)

Oh,yes this first poetic couplet can be interpretated in multiple ways. One WAY----- he is praising his own DEEWAN and DEEWAN POETRY---- ALL poetry is wearing paper clothes ( written on paper) and with his worn poetry, is crying( faryading! ) about shokhee ( playfullness of words) of the poetry. ----------- SECOND WAY of interpretation is---that he is praising the ALMIGHTY CREATOR, he is saying that ALL CREATION is faryadee ( crying) about the shokhee ( playfulness) of creatures----- that everything created is KAGHZEE(impermanent). !!! Oh YES, it can be interpretated that way as well!!

the meaning as explained does not ring true to me...... i think Ghalib has talked about the impermanence of life.......kaagazi pairahan .....kaagaz can be destroyed ie we ultimately disappear/die. a beautiful painting ( naskh) is appealing to the creativity of the painter ( to paint , create, naskh) however even the most beautiful painting thus created is on paper ie tangible and shanbhangur ie impermanent ie death ......a very deep and philosophical couplet.

Misra Ghalib ka hai aur kaifiyat har ek ki apni apni. Apki kaifiyat pasand aayi. I think too that it is about the absurdity of man questioning his frivolous maker about meaning in an impermanent life.
