Initially a marketplace for precious stones, it evolved into a center for performing arts, music, dance, and courtesanship. During the Mughal Empire, it flourished as a cultural hub where talented courtesans entertained the nobility with their skills in classical music, dance, and poetry. However, with the decline of the Mughal Empire and the advent of British colonial rule, Heera Mandi's social dynamics shifted, becoming synonymous with prostitution and the sex trade
