- So, The MLS draft - how DOES it work? The Major League Soccer SUPERDRAFT is an exciting annual event that matches young, exciting players with MLS clubs. The Superdraft has produced some of football's greatest MLS Stars and each iteration promises to bring through new talent with huge potential.
Teams participate in the draft to choose players who have graduated from college or have otherwise been signed by the league. The SuperDraft is made up of the MLS College Draft, in which players who had completed their undergraduate degrees were picked, and the MLS Supplemental Draft, in which all other players were selected. Each club has a choice in each of the three rounds of the draft, which are ordered based on the clubs' standings in the regular season and playoffs, with the last-placed team (or expansion teams) receiving the first pick.
The draft was intended to help weaker clubs build their squads and its purpose was to ensure strict parity in the league. Since its inception in 2000, the SuperDraft has taken the place of the league's regular draft.
The 2010s saw a decline in the significance of the SuperDraft as MLS teams developed their own youth academy programmes and added young players from other leagues. For the first time, conference calls and online streaming were used to conduct the 2020 MLS SuperDraft.

The draft is mostly a joke now. While a few players may make starting roles, most get traded for some form of money.
Yeah, there’s been some clever dealings in the last few
@@discoveringmls the only way I see it still being a relevant thing for the league is if the MLS lower leagues survive and everyone just throws them down there. Either to develop into first team players, or to sell off.
The first few picks could be great still but it shallows out I think for the big guys especially
How would a superdraft be affected with promotion and relegation if it ever became a thing
I guess they would adapt it to give the newly promoted teams first pick? Interesting question
@@discoveringmls facts
Btw are the gonna expand the mls to 30 or 32 teams? I’m getting conflicting views about it
I’m hearing both too. There seems to be at least one more on the way so 32 might be more logical
How many rounds?
Three rounds
@@discoveringmls so teams only get 3 players each right
Yes, that’s right bud
What it differs with ordinary transfer like in other nation football leagues?
It does, for a few reasons but mostly down to the centralised ownership of MLS
Italy has 5 great teams tf are you talking about
Just a joke, bud
