As an American who’s been following European football their entire life I am actually going to spend this season trying my best to enjoy the MLS. This was a helpful video. Thanks!
Me too! Didn't understood shit how a team is taking the Cup or Championship, how the divisions works, etc.(classic Americans.Socker, miles, feet, inches, and many more can't remember now).
Good Video just to add a few things regarding the Canadian MLS Teams, They don't play in the US Open Cup the Play in the Canadian Championship, Canadian MLS Teams can't Qualify for CONCACAF Champions League Via the MLS the only way they can do that is Via the Canadian Championship where they are given 1 slot into the Champions League which is between the 3 Canadian MLS teams, the CPL teams, the Winners of the Ontario League and Winners of the Quebec League, winners of the CPL qualify for the CONCACAF League
Holy crap this is so clear! I've been bashing my head trying to learn prem and it's confusing as all can be at times and this is so much more familiar of a set up as a baseball fan. Thank you! It get's me excited for this season as I jump in a little late.
wait so someone in the eastern conference could play a team in the western conference even though they are technically not in the same league, for points in separate tables? 🤯🤯
Teams in the same conference play each other twice one home and one away. Teams of the opposite conference like New England and Seattle would get to play teams of the opposite conference once in the MLS season. As of 2021, the regular season has all team face each other except 5 teams from the opposite conference. Meaning that a team like Orlando could face Colorado in 2019 but could not see each other in 2020 until the next season, I don’t know why this is a thing or why 5 teams but I assume its to keep the season to 34 games idk. I’m also assuming that teams are being rotated annually on who will not face each other. (Both the Western & Eastern conference are both in the same league).
West and East are technically the SAME league. It's fairly straightforward. Don't even try to understand Major League Baseball's "table," post-season/playoffs.
IMHO I think the relegation and promotion structure is the one thing that is missing from MLS. Also, individual team ownership. Plus the salary cap is crap. This is why players like Ronaldo aren’t in the MLS. Oh and the last difference is the heat. Lol. MLS players play in much warmer weather than Premier League teams.
I love mls more than any other league. I’m not saying it isn’t flawed or that the quality is better than the prem or others, but it’s so god damn entertaining! AND I CAN ACTUALLY GO TO MATCHES! Maybe it’s just me but it was so difficult for me to manufacture a genuine connection with a club in Europe growing up. My dad is a massive Juve fan but I only watch because he does. With MLS I can feel a sense of identity with a club that plays for my city or state. I never understand people who criticize mls supporters, watching your domestic league is apart of the culture!
The MLS format is the hardest to win in the world…!!! In all the other league if you end up with the most points you are the winner, the MLS you are going to the playoffs!!!
As someone who follows football my whole life in Europe, I'm really interested in this mls formula. I just can't figure this thing out: So, the league buys/contracts players..and they just tell the player they just signed:"yo you going to play for that club"? Altough i understand that its no coincidence that Messi, Alba and Busquets are in the same team atm. I hope I'm wrong at this..the tactics/philosophy of a coach/club just can't be made since you cannot chose wich player you want to get to your team, to make your system/tactics work. And other clubs are just not able to promote to higher leagues if they win the title in the 2nd division? Ofcourse, the "problem" here is that the clubs with the most money will have the highest chance to win the title, but at least you can see the philosophy of a club, it's amazing to follow players individualy working themselfs up through the years..see the progression and make it to the top squads, or rise to become clublegends.
@@cactitigerThen congratulations on your MLS cup win in 2020 (I actually made a trailer of the final:(ruclips.net/video/JxiY1es6Wjs/видео.html) I'm a Miami fan
So there are 14 teams in each conference but team from one conference do not play all teams in other conference. How are these inter conference meets decided? By lottery?
So it’s like that: There are two “separate” leagues inside the league, the west and the east side. I think it’s because of the travel distances and time differences. ( This is also really similar to the NBA,NFL,MLB etc. ) The best 4 or 8 teams from each side are qualified for the play-offs and then compete for the championship. But the play-offs are randomized. So an east team are going to compete against a team from the west.
Yeah Leagues Cup is a cup for MLS and Mexican teams. I'll have to do a video on it at some point. US Open Cup is just American/Canadian teams, and then MLS Cup is essentially the playoffs for the MLS regular season
@@techgeforce most top divisions across the world have the same. And using city for example they’re an absolute joy to watch because of their ability. The MLS doesn’t have that ability pull and probably never will. A league isn’t just about the winner it’s about every team there if that makes sense. MLS feels like a cup competition spread across an entire league season with league points to try and make it seem legitimate when you don’t even win it for finishing top
None of the other American sports need relegation to thrive. I like the idea that my team will stay around and continue to work towards the same goal while facing similar opponents. It excites me purely on that fact. The competition is in holding the cups much like in the other sports not in club survival. There's also a lot less teams and money to put into creating new ones here than across the pond and losing teams would be a critical loss to the balance of the league
I suppose, but I don't think parity necessarily equates to competition. Just not a deep enough talent pool in the MLS for me to watch as consistently as the European leagues
Well, i suppose in the US a club being last on the table will bring you financial struggle, i think more financial struggle than in the PL because in England clubs keep making money from fans who buy tickets even if they're about to get relegated, I mean look at Southampton. Also in the PL, many sponsors will stay with newly relegated clubs like it happened to Burnley FC, be sure than in the US only the tops will get the really good sponsors and the lower half really needs to work hard or be forgotten about since the league is brand new.
I will never understand why American sports don't have a relegation/promotion system. (I get it keeps the rich, rich) it's boring as fuck. Nothing to lose at all.

One thing with the promotion and relegation in us soccer. Most if not all of the teams are tied to another higher level team. This is made so that the teams can develop players. So instead of a whole team going up to a level, just one player would go up if he’s preforming well and if someone from the top level is playing bad they’d send him down. It makes sense to have this format in the US because that’s how almost every other sport it so it makes it more familiar to the fans of us sports.
