Quick correction about something, I forgot that in SMTIV and IVA Physical skills do use MP and not your health. I think I got myself mixed up on this since P5 does still have your physical skills use HP, so I mistakenly remembered IV also being that way since it came before P5. Either way point still stands that I like the use of HP for physical skills more just wanted to clarify on that mistake.
I agree. I prefer the HP cost
Yeah it help balances out the combat with magic and physical skills requiring different costs
It seems incredibly odd to me that they would change that. What reason is there to do so? Why should a physical attack use magic points? Ironically it would make more sense for physical attacks to take SP in Persona than it does for them to use MP in SMT. I really like how physical demons felt like a glass canon sometimes in Nocturne and DDS because in order to do massive damage you potentially have to put yourself in a vulnerable position by using up your HP. Hopefully they change this back in SMT6 or any sequel SMT5 gets.
happy to your favorite smt timeline is still alive
I’m currently playing P4G, which uses HP for physical skills. Maybe that was the confusion?
Putting down this game to go to bed required the strongest of wills
I got like 4h of sleep cause I woke up randomly at 3 am and realizing that SMTV is out RIGHT NOW, I definitely could not fall asleep
Same. Stopped after the first boss and I dreamed I was playing SMT V
@@keeysOST LOL, same happened to me. Spoiler:
I had a dream of Lucifer telling me that he killed god.
I don't know this is my first SMT game and I got my ass handed to me by some onion head demons lol. They got the jump on me and destroyed me and my Pixie. I'm going to play it in casual instead of Normal. For now anyway.

MY MANS GETTING RECOGNIZED WITH THE REVIEW COPY, BLESS UP
Damn you got an early copy, that's how you know you've made it.
Free sauce packets for all!
7:42 That's actually an issue with Unreal Engine. It's especially prevalent on Switch games using UE. This is something that happened CONSTANTLY with No More Heroes III to the point where it was comical. Especially during cutscenes.
Switch isn't the most powerful of systems and Unreal needs a lot of optimization to run well there.
Something similar happened with Final Fantasy XV's Luminous Engine and the original Xbox One/PS4. The engine was too demanding for that gen of consoles.
You can have a super computer and Unreal Engine will have issues loading textures it’s literally a thing for every version of the engine. You can go back to games made by Epic, like all of the original Gears of Wars and etc where you will have the pop in. It’s just a thing with unreal that probably won’t ever go away regardless of the power of the system a game is in.
Yeah, that unreal engine. I seen so many games with the same engine.
The game has been data mined, theres a ps4/ps5 release and a PC release, I'm waiting for the ps5 version.
@@kg888 Mostly Square Enix
I love that you can basically run around encounters as much as you want, I hate random encounters so much.
I can't put into words how good that super run ability feels. I mean the fact you can do it indefinitely, how you never sacrifice even a spec of control, and the simple joy you get of just watching the animation is something so underrated.
@@matthatter56 Oh yeah, it feels great. The hair makes it. I don't know what the heck kind of gender Nahobino's got going on, but I want it.

@@thelegacyofgaming2928 I offed his pals so he never got healed but he still took so many turns
No Gun skills in SMT V so we have to wait for Nahobino to guest star in another game before we can decide if he can take on 1000 Morganas

@@KungFuBroFist still funny gay little run
Fither: I'm a slowpoke, it took me about 30 hours to beat the game
Me: 60 hours of gameplay and counting
It feels so surreal having waited for this game forever and now it's coming out tomorrow. This is honestly my most anticipated game of all time and I can't wait to play it tomorrow, SMT is just my favorite gaming franchise.
Hah but it came out 12 hours ago, in Finland in Europe :D
Great review, but I feel like Fither kinda forgot some stuff about previous SMT games. Demons using MP instead of HP for physical attacks has been a thing ever since the original Strange Journey (so also in the SMT IV and Apocalypse, nothing really new here), and Magatsuhi gauge is just a combination of Command Skills from SJ Redux and Assist gauge from Apocalypse. Aside from that, very informative. Thanks!
thanks for pointing this out will make a comment correcting it
@@Fitherfith Always glad to help.
Slash Strike Pierce was the winning formula for physical abilities.
physical/gun is way better
@@parkernisbett ...No.
@@parkernisbett Why not both lmfao. Slash Strike Pierce and Gun for Physical abilities + "Break" affinity as Persona's equivalent of SMT's Pierce

Imagine SMTIV/IV:A's Tokyo but with SMTV's expansive environments.
Maaan, i'd pay SERIOUS cash for that type of remake.. would be amazing. Imagine open world SMT4/A BUT with full 3d demons for all those 400+ demons.. crazy
Imagine actually being able to walk around parts of Mikado

Fither copping the atlus sponsorship, amazing W
Yoshitsune is my favorite demon design and fighting wise. An ancient samurai looking figure with an amazing unique skill that can carry you into endgame even though you get him midgame. Not only that, but his attack and agility are incredibly high by default, so once you boost him with better fusions, he becomes an absolute monster.
Like a week ago i had a dream where i e-mailed fither "dawg be honest do you have a review copy" like he was a fed or something
4:00
There are even demons that want you dead so badly, that they don't care about level differences.
And for some reason I find that funny more then anything.
God damn the demons freezing and shattering from bufu spells is the most satisfying thing to watch
If you're going to write about the story, I think you ought to mention how cool it is for the game to address how much time has passed, compared to Nocturne who's all ambiguous about the time passage between the Hospital Basement and Vortex World
Kinda funny how one kid manages to become god in a few afternoons though. Assuming that he still kept up with schoolwork right until the Pandemonic Summon.
I just got it, and this will be my first smt main line game the only other game Ive played and not watched on RUclips is Vanilla Persona 5, so I’m excited
Yeah, same here, I've just got smt5 now and it'll be my first, I've got P5R and P4G but have only played a bit of both
I hope you love it
Hope you like it
I can't wait for this bad boy to come to my house later today
The animations looks phenomenal. The video was transitioned seamlessly and it was interesting to hear about the game. Can’t wait to buy it soon
Considering my limited experience with both franchises (P4G on PC then P5 and Strikers after last year, then Nocturne HD this year), the stuff that interested me most gameplay-wise is the buff and debuff system. I only just finished the first big area of the game, but it seems like it follows mostly the Persona system of 3 turn (de)buffs with the simplistic Attack/Defense/Accuracy&Evasion with no Magic Attack buffs in sight.
But the pass/demon change system is definitely something of note too compared to Nocturne. It’s a lot more forgiving. Being able to just stack extra actions instead of having to pass then do an action lest you waste that extra action. And demon changing gives an extra action instead of using an action.
And you already mentioned the Physical moves using MP and the seemingly less HP/more MP on demons which is new to me considering my experience with the games I mentioned above. It’s very different overall from what I’m used to, but I can dig it. I’m having a blast so far.
It's so cool hearing how other people play SMT games, I personally would go for the higher chance to inflict ailments over increased critical rate.
In SMT/Persona (or any game that offers this experience), I enjoy going hard into the fantasy of being a magic-wielding Summoner, so the ailment boost will help a lot with leaning into that aesthetic.
Not increased crit rate, *guaranteed crits* . That, like, doubles your total moves for the turn, which is busted.
Can’t wait to play this, still gotta beat Apocalypse and Strange Journey though. In Strsnge Journey I’m stuck, and I’ll be even more stuck if I try to play it now after stopping for months.
Everytime he runs a war veteran gets sonic 06 flashbacks
Smt demonology was what got me into your channel, so it would be awesome for you to bring it back for the new demons.
Early copy lets goooo. That being said it's kind of sad that there was nothing on the story or characters in this video, since that's what i'm worried about the most and what seems to be the most controversial looking at reviews.
From what I've heard it's closer to 1-3 rather than the more character driven stuff of 4 and 4a
@@jeveritt8398 yeah some people call it similar to Nocturne in that the characters aren't really noteworthy and you don't know them for very long.
@@jeveritt8398 If anything it's Nocturne that's the odd one out, not 4.
What worries me the most is that this setting is becoming VERY repetitive. Is it so hard to ask for a living breathing tokyo that could fall into ruin based on my actions instead of making me run around in ruins forever from the start? The biggest problem with this setting is that it gives no room for other activities that jump away from the gameplay loop. With a living city the possibilities are endless.
First SMT I did all the side questions for. They were fun and not doing them you miss out on a lot of fun bosses. Especially the DLC. I like how the DLC still makes you earn the Demon. If you take them on at the proper level and difficulty they’re super challenging and super fun.
Demi-Fiend was the most rewarding boss I’ve ever beat in any game and I only beat him on casual.
Countless close boss fights in general. Great game!
This was my first mainline SMT and honestly it's one of those games I wish I could play for the first time again. Really gorgeous game and such a blast to actually play
Oh nice to hear your thoughts on the game!
Good video! You sure did say "like" a lot throughout. You sound so excited!
Love to see SMTV and No More Heroes 3 coming to PC. Those japan aclaimed games really shine on a more diverse ecosystem here in the west
I just got about 50 hours in on hard mode and boy i will say using buffs on hard is absolutley integral! Loved the video
Quick question is it still the law, neutral, chaos endings or is it more like nocturne?
It's Law, Neutral, and Chaos, because Nyarly mentioned that he got the Chaos ending.
This is honestly the best shin megami tensei to start with. It definitely feels more rewarding than the past entries and it looks beautiful. The story is also very intriguing despite it being somewhat slow. Secondly, I sunk 85 hours into my first playthrough, and that's to 100% the game except for miracles (which would be about 100+ hours of farming), and the replayability of this game is incredible, whether it's for multiple endings achieved on 1 save file, or simply to beat the game with different teams and compositions and to make overpowered demons through fusion abuse. This game has it all. The open world aspect is also a huge bonus, especially with being able to physically see the demons you can encounter.
It's an excrutiating wait for that delivery
I'm hyped about the music!
I'm in severe pain that I do not own a switch. I've been so hyped for this game, and I can't even play it for another month since I get my switch on Christmas. thanks for the no spoiler review, I'm trying my hardest to avoid them but I can't help but look at some gameplay
Physical skills use MP in SMTIV as well. It's definitely not something I like either, I think that having to manage HP on physical demons was very compelling
thanks for pointing this out I totally forgot it was like that in IV as well
In SMTIVA too.
I see a lot of people compare this to nocturne so I have to ask should I keep the pixie?
It's been a long road I hope you all enjoy the game :D
between SMTV, and Xenoblade 2(different gameplay style i know bear with me) i think random encounters should be a thing of the past. With the 2 games i have listed, we have 2 clear cut examples of non random encounters working in 2 different JRPG subgenres. God im so happy they didnt have random encounters in this game
No random encounters really helped dragon quest 11
Omg I tried to get all quests, chests, and miman (didn't complete compedium and shiva) and it took me 80 hours on casual :') Also your comment about other SMT games having you "constantly fearing for your life" in dungeons is exactly how I'm feeling playing Nocturne. Literally the whole time I'm like, where's the next save point where is it WHERE IS IT *screams*
Ageed that phys skills using HP is a more interesting element to combat, also would've been worth mentioning demon skill potential since it's a new system (at least from the games i've played)
@Dan the Axolotl good point, definitely feels like you take more damage more often in this game
Good vid! Passion, energy, and details were much appreciated. One bit of feedback - you have a lot of “like”s as fillers, personally I think it would help to stitch the video together really well if you were able to kick that habit! All from love.
i def think making recovery much cheaper plays a big part in making it less stressful than other entries.
I have never heard of a Rougaru and I live in Louisiana. Is that some swamp stuff
I'm 5 hours in and I'm having fun so far.
I'm slightly disappointed by some small QoL that are missing like how pressing B in combat in nocturne would put you on the attack command so you can always very quickly use a basic attack.
The menus feel less responsive than in any megaten game I've played. It's really drastic compared to P5 where you can almost input action ahead of time and queue them whereas in SMT5 there's a weird half second delay at the start of every turn where you can't do any input.
Early on the enemy magatsuhi skills are really boring and I hope they end up having special moves because boss fights are super predictable so far, I've done 3 I think (2 optionals).
But overall I'm really happy with the game it's a big step up for the franchise, it's unfortunate the switch is holding back the title and a steam or even PS4 port would be really amazing.
I'm looking forward to uncovering the mysteries of the plot.
I would definitely say my biggest pet peeve with this game is how generic the menus are. It's not horrible but it does feel disconnected from the game in a way that the Persona games and SJ made the menu feel integrated into the overall game world.
@@kyrozudesoya1829 Persona games are way more visually aesthetic driven I think. The megaten ones are darker. Love them both tho.
taking a break from this game and going to bed is literally impossible please help
Fither with the review copy, he's in the big leagues now
Every time one of Fither's videos starts with "Heeeeeyyyy", I expect it to continue with "Paisanos! It's the Super Mario Bros Super Show!"
I'm loving this game so far but I'm in the second region starting to regret focusing on magic instead of strength. I'm hoping these spells start to feel worth it both damage and MP usage wise by the time I finish the area or I might be making a second run trying the other side lol
I am a Nocturne baby so I always go for strength.
I was playing last night in handheld mode in bed, and it does seem to run better in handheld mode. It wasn't quite as visually impressive in handheld though.
This is my first main smt games having only played persona 4 and 5.
I might actually enjoy smt more now.
Does anyone have any tips for beating hydra? He is kicking my ass.
A good tip in general, sometime you'll benefit from having a team that can block the bosses attacks or exploit their weakness (preferably both, if possible), so your first turn you should use a spyglass and identify their weakness and moveset, then if you can, bring out a team of demons that have an advantage. Most times, getting more levels is not the key (unless you want to fuse a specific demon), but building a team that has the advantage in your circumstances. Also use items like dampeners, shards, and gems. There are many items that can allow you to hold your momentum during the battle, so definitely use them.
4:25 - 'Nahobino is definitely in my top 5 for SMT protagonists'
Number of SMT games: 5
(I realize that there's more than 5 protagonists due to spin offs and whatnot but it still made me laugh LOL)
Hee Ho thank you Hee for playing my game Ho
Really curious to do the story cause I see very split down the middle reactions to the story.
“do the story”.. as opposed to what exactly? the online multiplayer? lml
I got a slime on my team for nothing in exchange. He wanted my macca I didn't have enough, then he asked for my health and I told him he had enough and he was contemp.
waiting for you since yesterday.
This is my first smt game i have played p5 and personally i like this so much more. persona is great but i love the more combat focused game that smt5 is. I plan to get smt3 remastered on my ps5 cant wait
totally off topic but 8:13 reminds me of that scene from monsters vs aliens wher ethe guy was playing some kind of piano that became a meme for a while
meanwhile watching the protag run around in the world reminds me of a mix of sonic (the blue hair and running animation...) and nier automata (the buildings) lmao
wait, so physical is not all that viable? i was planning going for str... would you guys recommend instead magic?
physical actually works really well for Nahobino in particular, he gets some really good unique physical attacks. it's just hard to really capitalize on enemy weaknesses early on, but once you get to the mid game it gets a lot easier.
I’m personally making an agility build. Sukunda and Sukukaja, plus taunt, and I’m basically unhittable against bosses
The graphics are great, but I am currently too distracted on Nahobino's flowing blue hair
Every time I look the protags name I keep reading it as 'Filthy'
I have a question. Would you like to have protagonist in the bussy?
They sent you an early copy that’s so cool! Like they were like ign gamespot fither kotaku. Love the thought of some guys in pr watching the shlock vids.
Oh crap. Congrats man!
Holy shit you got an early copy? Damn I’m so happy for you
I what's the difference between using reverse compendium and just searching with no filter?
Fither gave Atlus USA the rights to publish SMTV
Damn, sounds like my nocturne strategy of just sucking up all the enemy mp until they can’t do anything might not work so good in this game
So far that I've played, I do think this game is a step in the right direction. I want a modern day Devil Summoner that's an ARPG (get Platinum or whoever for it). But integrate the use of demons into the gameplay and world exploration in an expanded way based off of the Raidou games. Getting certain demons let you double jump, or having Oberon/Titania appear to let you float down from a high place to cross some chasm. Have your phone used as a the UI that let's you use and manage the Demon Summoning Program. Have a customizable protagonist and let us tailor what they can do (be physical powerhouse or more magically inclined or more support).
Seeing SMTV's world executed as it is makes me think they can do it. They have a nice solid template to build off of here. It doesn't have to be a SMTVI. Just do a spin-off like Devil Summoner. It'd be awesome.
The inclusion of grimoire and gospel and full party level collection points and essences have made Hard Mode relatively... forgiving. They basically pulled a lot of the grind. You'll still be grinding, but not so much for xp all that often. As for the buffs and debuffs you'll need to build specific demons that have the affinity to deal with it.
You dont nessecarily need to grind if you think «oh use grimoire/Gospel, battle, done»
Do the side quest, literally every tool is available to you from the game from doing exploration
What about the demon fairy you have the one in the kimono can you use her in your party?
Where in La are you from. I live in Illinois now but I grew up in denham springs
I am so exited to see Abaddon
Well then it looks like Atlus has given this game a lot of love. I’m glad it was worth the wait.
Man I really can’t wait to try this game out especially since I need a game to unwind
SMT is an interesting choice to unwind lol
I can't wait to play
it's my favorite soundtrack in the series

I think the demon selection is more interesting so far. There's so many cool demons in the first area

You know what Yoshitsunes unique move is in this game?
8 weak physical attacks to random foes 100% crit
and you know what's the first unique move the Nahobino learns?
8 weak physical attacks to one foe
Metroid Dread and SMT V are my games of the year.
Shiva's boss music is incredible.
I took a break at like level 44 cuz I kept getting lost and dying and didn't want to learn to hate this game
Ah its so good. too bad cant angel cant go multiple transformation like smt4. Yet the environment is so good, the world feels more.. lively
This game is so fun and addictive, I highly recommend to any jrpg fan.
It’s not really the switch’s fault with the models, etc not loading. It’s actually more to do with the Unreal Engine, it’s been a issue with almost every version of the engine. From Gears of War to this, if you use the Unreal Engine your gonna have pop in.
Sure but that problem is only amplified by how pathetically anemic the switch is unfortunately
I've played games that used UE4 like God Eater 3 and it had pop in and I have a decent gaming laptop
@@bgbss680 clarifying that UE4 literally came out before the switch ever came out so making optimization and etc around UE4 on the switch is really dependant.
UE5 is targetted specifcally to high end scaling games and low scaled but high scaled game, this is very noticeable if you check like games like Fortnite that just started to use UE5 and I haven’t noticed much dips when playing on the switch which is very rare now besides build battle.
This is not the switch’s problem although it is behind specs like ps5 and Xbox series X and Series S but more so on UE4 as a whole.
UE5 also allows far more better options when it comes to optimization and etc for games in the future for mostly all consoles and pc’s in general Although specs also matters
SMT5 really brought on a new wave of demon waifus. Manananggal and Kaya-No-Hime...the duality of man. I love those two
as someone who has only played smt 5 p 4&5 and not past matador in 3 i prefer physical skills takeing hp over mp
Fither I love you, please recognize me senpai
