But you run out of space when you start listing songs from an icon of classic rock who's put out (and is STILL putting out!) music for almost 60 years.
This wonderful song was banned in Spain as they didn't like Cortez being called a killer. Neil Young is a genius and for the next song I will recommend "Southern Man". I saw him and Crazy Horse live many years ago and they played a very long version of this sng. I really enjoy watching you two!

There are many people who will tell you that Neil Young is incomparable; for me, this reminds me of those dreamy days of childhood, riding in the car with my dad, in the years before he died, with all the windows down, cruising on back roads, the music loud enough to drown out the rest of the world. It’s a song about a time that is long gone, a time that never was. I’ll still always remember it fondly.

Neil. Up there with the best of them. He’s recorded everything from folk to really heavy rock. Know as the ‘Godfather of Grunge’ has written some beautiful lyrics and the most gorgeous melodies. Hope you keep checking him out. There’s some 60 years of stuff for you to catch up on. So pleased you enjoyed it & checked him out.
This is one of his best ! I only saw him in concert once, but clearly recall how the intensity of the show ramped up a few notches when he got into Cortez as he used it to lead up to the climactic finale. He's amazing live !!
One of my all time favorite Neil Young songs. Cinnamon Girl, Like A Hurricane, Sugar Mountain, My My Hey Hey, Hey Hey My My, Old Man... The list is long for Neil. I saw Neil with Crazy Horse in 83' in Athens. Neil played acoustic, just him and his harmonica for an hour which was followed by 90 minutes of Neil and Crazy Horse.

Neil is a Canadian singer-songwriter whose career has spanned 6 decades - he is still making music and has always been a political commentator who is now a musical legend. He played with David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash in one of the first super groups (CSNY), and he had already worked with Crazy Horse and was one of the voices of that generation of anti-Vietnam war artists. For me "After The Gold Rush" was the album that cemented his place in Rock-n-roll history, considered by us hippies in England a masterpiece. Any track will do, maybe "Southern Man" as a condemnation of slavery in Americas south. Peace.

Yes you must hear the BBC live track by Neil of 'Old Man', you will love it. This slectric Cortez track is marvellous and you can imagine the prow of the boat rising and falling as it cuts into the waves on its way to the Americas before the lyrics explain it all. Wonderful guitar by a genius player and songwriter.

Great eaction to a classic. May I suggest that you try "Like A Hurricane" or "Powderfinger" next. I first heard Neil in 1971 with his song "Tell Me Why".

Neil Young has covered so many genres: country,folk,hard rock,blues,new wave,rockabilly and more. like That is something he has in common with Led Zeppelin,his electicism. Young has hit on controversial topics on songs like Cortez The Killer(which was banned in Spain),Ohio( about protest killings at Kent State University during Vietnam) and Southern Man( about the racism in the Southern US). Carol has one of the most beautifully expressive faces I've ever seen. The way her emotions flow through her shining eyes and pursed lips, it's very captivating. I couldn't imagine how bad it would feel to cause that face to reflect pain, betrayal, or sorrow.
This song was banned in Spain for labelling Cortez a killer. As mentioned below Neil's 1971 BBC concert "Old Man" . Please try and find one of the videos that has him introducing the story behind the song. From that same concert "Love in Mind" an under two-minute song that is beautiful song that leaves you wanting more. Thanks for your reaction to Neil. This guy wrote a song called "Sugar Mountain", which is a song about moving into adulthood and leaving home, when he was 19 yoa - he wrote "Ohio" just 3 weeks after the Kent State massacre of vietnam war protesters in 1970 (the song was released by CSNY on "So Far" which did not come out until 1974) - there is acoustic Neil ("After the Gold Rush", "Harvest", "Tonight's the Night", etc.) then there is electric Neil (most everything with Crazy Horse) - The album "Live Rust" has one side that is mostly his acoustic stuff (if i remember correctly) and the other side of the double album was electric...the live version of "Cortez the Killer" is incredible, but i thought ya'll might enjoy the studio version to start...this is indeed a VERY DEEP rabbit hole with a variety that speaks to his song-writing genius ... he is also known as the Godfather of "grunge"...so just versatile...thanks as always for great reaction...can't wait to see ya'll watch Neil play "Old Man" and "Needle and the Damage Done"!
Man are you two in for a treat with this artist. And I mean artist in the truest sense of the word! When Shakey (Neil) has Old Black in his hands he created some of the greatest most memorable guitar work to ever grace my ears. Have been fortunate enough to see him 7/8 times and each time was different.....enjoy the ride! Cheers
The guitar solo at the start depicts the journey across the ocean. At times you can hear the boat crashing through the waves. It sounds simple but not many guitarist (if any) can play the way Neil plays here.
So many great Neil Young songs. So I will suggest an obvious and easy one, Cinnamon Girl - a pop masterpiece that is pure rock. "Ten silver saxes, a bass with a bow-"
Young is one of the few musicians today from this time period, where if you gave him a guitar/s and a piano, he could entertain a crowd for 5 hours and still have material left in his resume that would entice you to stay and listen. There aren't a lot of old rockers that still have a voice that is not much different from 50 years ago. Like him or not, need to respect him for his musical achievements as he is a a remarkable man.
Neil's guitar style has been characterized as 'primitive' and 'anti-technique'. No one else sounds like him when it comes to guitar soloing. In his song 'Cinnamon Girl' he plays and pulls off a one note guitar solo that actually works and it is considered a true rock classic. 'Southern Man' is definitely a song you should listen to. Lynyrd Skynyrd famously references it in their song 'Sweet Home Alabama'.
Well guys ,you just struck the jackpot........In your first listen to Neil Young,you just may have hit on his best composition. However as you go down this path you will soon discover that there are MANY sides to this man and his music. Neil is a deep deep dive. Living legend. Saw him live last year. Incredible concert. Since you really seem to love guitar, PLEASE check out Stevie Ray Vaughn's 'Tin Pan Alley' studio recording. Then move on to his live videos. Be prepared to hold on your your head or it might get blown off your shoulders.
Ooh you are in now, Neil Young is so incredible, been listening for years, The Live Rust Album would be a great place to go, double Album 1st album is an acoustic set album 2 is electric, Like a Hurricane is an epic song from the Live Rust album, Powderfinger, Cortez the killer, Cowgirl in the sand ( live at Fillmore) an epic 16 mins long, Like a Hurricane is sin* I could play 10 times a day and never get bored with it.
Nice reaction... Neil is an amazing songwriter. Never get tired of his music. Another very powerful songwriter that we lost in 2023 was Canadian Gordon Lightfoot. He did an amazing job describing a real shipping tragedy that happened on Lake Superior in 1975. "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" is very well composed and pays respect to the sailors families. He had a very nice ay of telling the story through music.
Neil live at the Farm Aid concerts. These are annual concerts featuring many great stars. The aim is to raise funds for poorer farmers. It’s the of thing Neil does. His wife is Darryl Hannah who was a famous actress who is well known for her environmental campaigning.
If y'all want to start from his early work "Mr. Soul" "Expecting To Fly" or "On The Way Home" are really great. He can write a great country/folk song like "Old Man" and then write a rock anthem like "Southern Man". Discovering Neil Young is a pretty long journey, but well worth the trip.

Please check out the Neil Young and Crazy Horse album "Everybody Knows this is Nowhere" It's a vibe from beginning to end and it contains many of the songs people are suggesting. It's his first album with the Crazy Horse band. This musical ensemble is so raw and they sound so unique.
If you want to see/hear how versatile Neil is watch him sing a Beatles song A Day in the Life 2009, where Neil is seen as possessed by this song. And to top it off, Paul McCartney joins him. He is a true master.
I love this original studio recording, but do yourselves a BIG favor and watch Dave Matthews Band's live performance of Cortez The Killer in Central Park with Warren Haynes then watch the performance in Madison Square Garden 2018, again with Warren Haynes. Neil Young is one of the greatest singer songwriters of all time. Whether with Buffalo Sprinfield,CSNY or solo(especially with his backup band,Crazy Horse who he has played with since the late 60s and they are still playing together) he really brings it.
Neil Young has covered so many genres: country,folk,hard rock,blues,new wave,rockabilly and more. like That is something he has in common with Led Zeppelin,his electicism. Young has hit on controversial topics on songs like Cortez The Killer(which was banned in Spain),Ohio( about protest killings at Kent State University during Vietnam) and Southern Man( about the racism in the Southern US).

Carol has one of the most beautifully expressive faces I've ever seen. The way her emotions flow through her shining eyes and pursed lips, it's very captivating. I couldn't imagine how bad it would feel to cause that face to reflect pain, betrayal, or sorrow.
This song was banned in Spain for labelling Cortez a killer. As mentioned below Neil's 1971 BBC concert "Old Man" . Please try and find one of the videos that has him introducing the story behind the song. From that same concert "Love in Mind" an under two-minute song that is beautiful song that leaves you wanting more. Thanks for your reaction to Neil. With over 60 albums you may never have time to get to all of the gems that Neil has given to us.

This guy wrote a song called "Sugar Mountain", which is a song about moving into adulthood and leaving home, when he was 19 yoa - he wrote "Ohio" just 3 weeks after the Kent State massacre of vietnam war protesters in 1970 (the song was released by CSNY on "So Far" which did not come out until 1974) - there is acoustic Neil ("After the Gold Rush", "Harvest", "Tonight's the Night", etc.) then there is electric Neil (most everything with Crazy Horse) - The album "Live Rust" has one side that is mostly his acoustic stuff (if i remember correctly) and the other side of the double album was electric...the live version of "Cortez the Killer" is incredible, but i thought ya'll might enjoy the studio version to start...this is indeed a VERY DEEP rabbit hole with a variety that speaks to his song-writing genius ... he is also known as the Godfather of "grunge"...so just versatile...thanks as always for great reaction...can't wait to see ya'll watch Neil play "Old Man" and "Needle and the Damage Done"!
Man are you two in for a treat with this artist. And I mean artist in the truest sense of the word! When Shakey (Neil) has Old Black in his hands he created some of the greatest most memorable guitar work to ever grace my ears. Have been fortunate enough to see him 7/8 times and each time was different.....enjoy the ride! Cheers
The guitar solo at the start depicts the journey across the ocean. At times you can hear the boat crashing through the waves. It sounds simple but not many guitarist (if any) can play the way Neil plays here.

Young is one of the few musicians today from this time period, where if you gave him a guitar/s and a piano, he could entertain a crowd for 5 hours and still have material left in his resume that would entice you to stay and listen. There aren't a lot of old rockers that still have a voice that is not much different from 50 years ago. Like him or not, need to respect him for his musical achievements as he is a a remarkable man.

Neil's guitar style has been characterized as 'primitive' and 'anti-technique'. No one else sounds like him when it comes to guitar soloing. In his song 'Cinnamon Girl' he plays and pulls off a one note guitar solo that actually works and it is considered a true rock classic. 'Southern Man' is definitely a song you should listen to. Lynyrd Skynyrd famously references it in their song 'Sweet Home Alabama'.

The slow burn of the intro without lyrics is why it rarely gets played on the radio, yet it's one of the reasons it's my favorite Neil Young song.

Ooh you are in now, Neil Young is so incredible, been listening for years, The Live Rust Album would be a great place to go, double Album 1st album is an acoustic set album 2 is electric, Like a Hurricane is an epic song from the Live Rust album, Powderfinger, Cortez the killer, Cowgirl in the sand ( live at Fillmore) an epic 16 mins long, Like a Hurricane is sin* I could play 10 times a day and never get bored with it.
Nice reaction... Neil is an amazing songwriter. Never get tired of his music. Another very powerful songwriter that we lost in 2023 was Canadian Gordon Lightfoot. He did an amazing job describing a real shipping tragedy that happened on Lake Superior in 1975. "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" is very well composed and pays respect to the sailors families. He had a very nice ay of telling the story through music.

Neil live at the Farm Aid concerts. These are annual concerts featuring many great stars. The aim is to raise funds for poorer farmers. It’s the of thing Neil does. His wife is Darryl Hannah who was a famous actress who is well known for her environmental campaigning.
If y'all want to start from his early work "Mr. Soul" "Expecting To Fly" or "On The Way Home" are really great. He can write a great country/folk song like "Old Man" and then write a rock anthem like "Southern Man". Discovering Neil Young is a pretty long journey, but well worth the trip.
Tonight's the Night, song and album. Needle and the Damage Done. Rust Never Sleeps. There's so many great songs. Beware people who like slick music and don't like Neal Young.

Neil is an OG folk artist, the Godfather of Grunge, versatile and extremely varied. From super grunge-punk-rock to ballads, and smooth guitar solos to rock you a** off distorted metallic long guitar rants....
From the Needle and the Damage Done to Rocking In the Free World they better buckle up, he is indeed all over the map but so love Crazy Horse here. They have no clue what greatness lays ahead.

Please check out the Neil Young and Crazy Horse album "Everybody Knows this is Nowhere" It's a vibe from beginning to end and it contains many of the songs people are suggesting. It's his first album with the Crazy Horse band. This musical ensemble is so raw and they sound so unique.

I love this original studio recording, but do yourselves a BIG favor and watch Dave Matthews Band's live performance of Cortez The Killer in Central Park with Warren Haynes then watch the performance in Madison Square Garden 2018, again with Warren Haynes. Absolutely stunning song and fantastic live covers!

Southern Man is a great one by him. but you have to make sure you have the longer version, because again, the guitar talks and cries and spits.
