Today I'm doing what I'm always preaching by getting out of my comfort zone and heading to Bangkok's Burmese Market in Bang Bon to try some epic Burmese dishes.
First of all I want to shout out @OTRontheroad for their awesome video on Burmese food history, without which, I'd never have known about this wonderful Burmese market in Bangkok.
Watch that here: • Chickpea Tofu and Pick...
So today was my first time eating Ohn no khao swè, a cousin of the famous Northern Thai dish, Khao Soi and it didn't disappoint. The Burmese curries I had were fantastic and the naan bread and sweet tea took me right back to southern Myanmar!

My name’s Gary and I’ve been living in Bangkok for the past five plus years and travelling Thailand for over ten. I’m obsessed with Thai street food and it’s that obsession that led me to start this RUclips channel. I want to share my favourite hidden spots in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand so you can fall in love with authentic, local Thai food as much as I have!
I’ve never understood travelling to a town or city and not eating the local food. How else do you really connect with a place? Let’s get out and explore together and I guarantee you’ll find a whole different side to this wonderful country.
If you love seeing off the beaten path, non-touristy, local life and authentic local life in Bangkok and Thailand then this is the channel for you. If go go bars on the Sukhumvit Road are more your thing (I’m not judging) then maybe not!

Thank for visiting our country😊🎉
Thanks for the shout! I was just watching the video...had to play that part twice because I thought I'd misheard as I was half-working while watching. Thanks, means a lot- and this is a great video as well. Enjoyed seeing the market from your perspective.
My pleasure! Thanks again for the tip!
Great stuff again Gary. I loved OTR’s videos about Burmese food and culture.
Cheers fella! Yeah it was great wasn’t it?
I've a few Burmese dishes here in Samui. I really enjoy the tea leaf salad. Such a unique flavor and texture. Once things settle down, would want to visit Burma.
The national dish of Myanmar(Burma)
1.Mohinga (Main dish)
2.Tea leaf salad (Dessert)
Those 2 types have been consumed for over a thousand years.
Those 2 kinds are also liked by Thai people and Chinese people
Authentic Burmese food
Hey Gary, great video. Good to see you enjoying our food.
Unreal Gary - we visited Mingalar Coffee in Phuket Old Town following your recommendation and loved it. Will have to go here next time we're in Bangkok!
Excellent! What a great find! I've been looking for as many Burmese places in Chiang Mai as I can find. There's a dozen or so, some of them are amazing. Cold, Kao Swe salad is now a new favorite!
We planned a holiday to Myanmar a few years ago but due to cost and COVID we never went but it's on the list👍

Thank for your visiting လာရောက်လည်ပတ်မှုအတွက် ကျေးဇူးတင်ပါတယ်။ Welcome to Myanmar sir 🇲🇲😍😍😍 by the way be careful
Those dishes in the 1st stall looked band on 😋
Thanks mate !😊
Shan food next mate!
next time please try shan noodles (shan khao swe), tofu noodles (tofu nway), fried tofu blocks (tofu kyaw), mohinga, mix noodle salad (u can either eat noodle, vermicelli or mixed), rice salad (hta min thote)
Most of the burmese curries are oily and savoury so that we can eat them with rice on the side, as you know the main staple food in myanmar is rice and in order to reduce the budget of the meat or ingredients to make a dish, burmese traditionally eat rice more with a savoury dish with little serving of the dishes as the rice dosen't have that much flaovr in it. I'd recommend "Monhinga" or "tealeaf salad" or something like noodle dishes if you just want to try it without rice, these are eaten without rice. And thank you so much for trying our cuisine and love your contents!
We are very happy that you like our foods😊❤
Fascinating, I'm in.
Well worth a stop mate
Amazing!
thank you pro🇲🇲🤝

actually for that flat naan bread, its realllllly good if u put some butter ans sugar and eat it while its hot and cripsy, omg i miss my country foods ugh
Good shot
It’s like just the tip of iceberg. There are more delicious Burmese food and those curries do not look the best quality as well but I am glad you enjoy it. U can find better quality food in Burmese restaurants in bkk. Burmese food are mostly on savory, umami side which is why I enjoy it so much.
I’m going to go on a deep dive later this month!
Looking delicious
The chick pea flour is normally toasted mate . Hence the nutty flavour
Ah nice! Thanks mate 😀
Thank you because do you love mynamar🇲🇲
Greetings from Myanmar!!! I really appreciate for your interest in our culture. If you have another chance to visit Burma, I’d highly recommend to go to Kawthaung and Myeik Archipelagos. They are incredibly beautiful! Wildlife abundant, private and luxury resorts, white sand beaches and you can go underwear adventures.
Hi I am from myanmar thanks for rating our foods
Thank you 🙏🏿

Nice difference. How were the chilis and the pastes? They look phet maak....my kind of food. That tandoor for the naan was a treat. Nice shout out to OTR for the heads up.
The fresh chilli is just the same but the pastes were a little different! Top find on the naan for sure
@@theroamingcook On my bucket list when I finally get to Bangkok. I'm not a fan of chain hotels, but I have a family member working for Marriott so I might be able to get some good deals on places to stay.

Hi I'm from Myanmar.Thank you for eating our Myanmar food. If you have the chance to come to our country, I'd like invite you to come.😀😊
Hi Gary, normally you don't eat the curry like that. We mix it with rice like Indians. We also rarely use masala in Pork. In Beef, we mostly use masala cos it kills smell. What you ate there is supposedly the sweet pork curry and the beef masala curry. Most Burmese meat curries are cooked by using onion and ginger only to get the curry. In other way, we use tomato and onion for eggs and vegetables mostly.
🎉

Myanmar 😊😊.. စားေကာင္းလား good.. 👍🏻👍🏻😘😘😘😘
PLS sir I want to see have you finished eating a Karen traditional food.
If it's not oily it's not Burmese food. All the wonderful flavors of fermented, spicy, hot, sweet & sour taste cooked in oil is what makes the Burmese food unique & different from Thai & Chinese. Besides the Burmese people burn off their fat by walking a lot. You will hardly see many overweight Burmese men & women. I am glad you enjoy Burmese food.
The nutty taste in the broth is from the peanut oil.... I think.
Yes Burma
Welcom to Myanmar bro
You always do new things. ❤always🎉apsulity
Thank you 🙏
its always going to be shan food first and then Burmese for me 😊
😎
I'm sure you've done one or two vlogs, but I'd be curious to see if there are any decent South Korean eateries in Bangkok.
so for our burmese cuisine, there is a holy trinity, garlic, ginger and onion or shallots. the burmese curries will always start with them and we even add deep fried thinly sliced shallots to make the dish have more curry sauce? and have a great savory taste and smell.
I m from myanmar ကအမဘ see i from myanmar 🇲🇲🇲🇲
Great because i live un Myanmar

Good myanmar🇲🇲 Food
Ha, that comment about how everyone is so nice when you go traveling. It has made me ask the same question to myself many times. As far as cultures go, I think that UK/some European cultures are not big on hospitality to strangers comparatively. That's about as diplomatic as I can put it.
You've not been to Ireland then (although its changing in places cos of demographics) ...also visit any Balkans country for great hospitality 👌🏻✌🏻😎
Yeah Ireland I’d the king of hospitality!
Me too Myanmar ☺
I'm from Myanmar 🇲🇲🇲🇲🇲🇲
Thats my contry❤❤
Looks like Nasi Kandar.
Seems there's a lot of cuisine fusion happening in the past, long before it became fashionable in the 70's.
Prices would be nice, Thanks.
Yes definitely similarities. Nothing in these markets is over 50/60 baht
@@theroamingcook Thanks for the prices.
Try the tea salad, bro soooo good 😊 Burmese tea salad 🥗 🫰

Nutty flavor is from roasted rich powder.
