Calibrating an Alpha Particle Detector

An instructional video for users of the alpha beam line at the Hope Ion Beam Accelerator Facility.
A certified alpha source is used to calibrate an Ortec(R) Ultra alpha detector. This detector is used for helium Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS).
Peak fitting is done using OriginPro.
RBS spectra fitting is done using SIMNRA (M. Mayer, SIMNRA User’s Guide, Report IPP 9/113, Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik, Garching, Germany, 1997).
The calibration and the energy are confirmed when the peak edges in the model align with the measured data.
