    I have a high sedimentation rate for unknown reasons but all my doctors have been weak in cautioning me to take Vitamin D. I've just been told to just take it, not how much, or the action, of even the effects on my inflammation. When I ask questions they simply get annoyed and one doctor called me squirrelly. It's said, the lack of teaching patients get from physicians and nurses. Thank God for research engines who save lives.

    Vit D serum levels vary by latitude, weather, lifestyle, body size, body fat levels, starting serum levels, co-factor levels, etc. Therefore a single fixed dose given to a variety of folks will have a variety of results.
    The most useful D variable versus any outcome is the serum level.
    The next methodological issue is the outcome criteria...... rickets, heart disease, etc. Each disease may respond to different serum levels. Rickets might be prevented at fairly low levels (e.g. 20-30 ng/ml) while infectious diseases might require much higher levels.
    Since natural levels at the equator are 40-60 ng/ml, a safe serum target is 50 ng/ml.
    The final issue is loading dose versus maintenance dose. Someone with a low D level will need a temporary high dose to raise their levels while a maintenance dose can be lower (Dr Heaney suggests 35IU/pound of body weight daily). The loading dose (see also Holick re "filling the tank") could be 10,000 iu/day for 4-5 weeks, re-test, adjust.
    If serum levels do not respond to dosing, then suspect a co-factor deficiency, usually magnesium. See also co-factors.
    Cheers.

    • @geonerd
      @geonerd 7 месяцев назад

      The immune cells all, AFAIK, lack the 'molecular pump' that bone, kidney and other tissue do possess. They rely on passive diffusion to move D in to the cell. 15 ng will fend off rickets, but proper immune response seems to require levels around 60~80ng, and perhaps above. And that assumes the patient doesn't have a VDR mutation or other malfunction in their VD pathway.
      Monitoring PTH is a good way to determine D sufficiency. Ramp D until PTH is driven into the low-normal range (

    I've been taking 10,000iu for a few years now and around flu time every year I catch something but the symptoms are much much less severe. I had flu about 10 x years ago and couldn't barely walk for a week. People in our office a few years ago, pretty much everyone came down with it and my friend got pneumonia. The virus just bounced off me. I went home one night got the shivers and had to go to bed early feeling sick then next day got up and was symptom free. D3 works absolutely. Now given the comments above, onto the main point. I'm convinced myself and the wife have had covid earlier this year. We had a cough solid for 3 x weeks, which felt like itchy cotton wool in the solar plexus and extended to our backs. No phlegm would come up at all but it sounded like there was something there. The taste in my throat was completely unnatural and every night after about an hour or so laid flat, I'd wake up and cough constantly for a good 10mins, to the point one night I had to hover over the sink with the feeling of going to be sick, but panicking at the same time. It did eventually subside after 3 x weeks of hell. The wife was coughing one night for 30mins non stop and was shouting what the hell is this, what is wrong with me. I truly believe that without D3 this covid would have taken us both down badly. A lot of money can be made when a vaccine is found for this covid, so why would we be advised to take D3 which is superbly effective and enhancing the immune system.

    Can we have a source on evidence that vitamin D can reduce cytokine storm? In talking to my brother who is a researcher at St Jude's, he said there is great evidence that vitamin D can reduce chronic inflamation but the evidence for it reducing cytokine storms in particular is lacking. (incidentally he thinks 2000-4000 IU a day is still a very good idea as the risks of supplementation are extremely low and vitamin d deficiency is a wide-scale problem in the US)

    Every vitamin/minerals/trace substances works together, so one should not only rely on only Vitamin D3 - we need a good balance of all that stuff. But it's makes most sense to start taking at least Vitamin C, B-complex and Vitamin D3 at some higher dose first week(s). And at the same time start to eat better food, and exercise. Let's say you do that for a month, then you only need to take the absolute lowest recommended dose. But in countries with less UV-light during the winter, a higher amount of D3 is wise - 30-50 ug/microgram should work fine

    • @dirkmoore4224
      @dirkmoore4224 4 года назад +2

      Covid is not a respiratory infection. The largest concentration of Ace 2 just happens to be in the lungs.By attaching to Ace 2 and taking it out of action a oxidative (inflammatory ) response throughout the endothelial lining of the vascular system occurs. Thus causing clotting...heart attack, stroke, pulmonary embolus etc. You still want to take your Vitamin D.

    • @yintercept4612
      @yintercept4612 4 года назад +1

      @@dirkmoore4224 That was the point of my comment. Most of the videos on SARS-CoV-2 are treating COVID19 like a respiratory disease that cascades throughout the body through an inflammatory response. The reports of blood clotting and replication in the ACE receptors in capillaries indicates that it attacks multiple systems.
      As I understand Vitamin D, Vitamin K and certain minerals play an important role in regulating blood thickness and clotting. For example this 2018 link ( www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6164284/ ) talks about vitamin D as a regulator of inflammation and cytokines . But I think there is a lot more to the story because there are different forms of Vitamin D.
      UV B rays hitting the skin form one type. Kidneys produce a second type, etc.. The balance of the different types seem to matter.
      To make things more complex. Vitamin D interacts with Vitamin K. (K1 = phytonadione, K2 = menaquinone) . These interactions seem to affect both bone health and blood health. Unfortunately, most of the information I've come across about these interactions are from health food stores trying to sell people supplements. I am hoping to find actual medical channels that examine the role of Vitamin D in blood health. I think the role it plays is quite complex.

There isn't some conspiracy to make people sick and die with Covid-19. The lock downs lower the R0 or how transmissible the virus is. If people aren't coming into contact with other people, they can't give them the virus, it's as simple as that. All these BS conspiracy theories just make people not want to listen to the government and will make the lockdowns last longer, the economy shrink further and things will continue to get worse. Obviously I am doing everything I can to stay inside and have very limited contact with friends (family members are either dead or far away). But every time they mention that I am in a high risk group for COVID-19 I wonder if I would survive the disease. I am very active (meaning I walk 45 minutes or bike 17 to 20 miles most days) but 58 years old, overweight and my diet is not the best since I don't cook and there are no healthy restaurants around me for take out. I guess when I get the disease I will know (notice I say when and not if based on how things are going in the US).
