- What a day this was... a last minute booking for a half day strip... This is what San Diego Mako fishing is all about... Jumping Mako shark! This 500 plus pound Mako shark came into the chum slick and was ready to anything put in front of him. We pitched a dead maceral and wham! hooked up on the 50wide!

Was the fish landed or tagged? Looked to be a chunky one. And yes this normally what makos do when hooked. I've seen them do it just for joy. Or maybe to free parasites, who knows. Back in the 80's there used to be huge mako tournaments here in NJ. I think they are protected now. Incredible animals. Little brother to the GW
NOAA is about a month away from a 2 month closure on makos, fished a tourney last weekend in ny hooked one we estimated to be around 600-800 Aired out next to the boat like this one, so big we thought it was a great white, fought for 3 and half hours before he rubbed us off on his tail cuz my 10 foot leader j wasn’t enough
