I got a 50-60 year old Hamilton Beach mixer (these things are practically indestructible) at a thrift store for $5. It's still going strong and I love it! I also had a lady see that I was looking at bread makers and she told me not to buy one that she had one in the car that she would give me. 😊
As the mom of a recent college grad - i dont ever think I’ll be saying teen years / early 20s are easy. It’s been a JOURNEY!!! Hang in there Cass there is light on the other side ☀️My biggest struggle was with “allowing” her to fall/fail and “talking her off a ledge” These years hold so much DRAMA - it’s exhausting. But I am happy to report, but hanging in there, and being the support of mom has strengthened our relationship, and I know she will come to me with anything. The struggle is REAL! As a mother of two grown boys, I can honestly say the teen years were by far the most challenging! I will also say it is extremely rewarding. The payoff is when your grown kids come to you and say "Mom, you were right." or "Mom, thank you for being patient with me through those years and thank you for raising me with the knowledge, wisdom and structure that you provided. I am better for it." Seeing them thrive, reflect and pass down those lessons to their new babies.....THAT is when it all really comes to fruition. Hang in there Momma! You've got this!
I carry a little, retractable sewing tape measure with me when I go thrifting. That way I can measure a pair of pants that fit me perfectly from left seam to right at the waist and just measure any potential finds at the store. It really helps when things don't have size tags. I keep a list of basic measurements for my family in my phone and just double check as I shop.

They are only teenagers for a very short time then it evens out to be more of a friendship.. these few turbulent years are the ones where you lay that foundation of friendship. Don't worry so much about details and let them make the mistakes. Brush off bad attitudes and understand that they are producing hormones that overwhelm them. They will remember you for giving them space and safety at the same time. It will be over in a flash I promise 😇 good luck 🎉

My “baby” will be 33 in July and her teen years almost ended me (she is the youngest of 3) but now we are best friends, we talk/text every day and she’s an amazing woman! She thanks me as often as she’s moved to do so, that she wouldn’t be so amazing without having such an amazing mom 😍
I’m a lifelong thrifter! My mom started me on my journey as a little kid going to yard sales. I love it because your home never looks like a cookie cutter home because it’s put together one piece at a time as you find amazing things. I have passed the thrifting bug along to my children, especially my youngest! We love going out to yard sales, goodwills, thrift stores, peddlers malls and see who can find the best deals. I found an entire 12 piece setting of sterling silver silverware in a wooden box for $9.99…..I win! :) (it is worth well over $2,000!!) Its so fun spending the day with my kids and bringing home not only fun goodies, but memories that will last a lifetime.
Another tip is to take your measurements if you can't fit them at the thrift store. Don't forget to bring measuring tape so you can measure the clothes you plan on buying. Also, as someone from the Netherlands I am SO jealous of the size of your thrift stores! So many bags, oh my!

My sister was an avid thrifter and convinced me to accompany her. Well, I found a brand new jean jacket for my 5-year old almost identical to one her 8-year old sister had gotten for her birthday that cost $50. I was hooked! I’ve been thrifting since (except during the pandemic). They really need to reopen the dressing rooms though because you really can’t rely on sizing to know if most clothing will fit. You have to be willing to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your prince! 😂
When my kids were at home 35-40 years ago, I found a sign that said "Your Lack of Planning is NOT my Emergency". It saved my brain. If they didn't do the things I said would be helpful, I could always point to the sign. They of course kept having their own emergencies, but they became fewer and fewer. Also I'm going to go to the thrift store tomorrow!
I remember a sign on an acquaintance's refrigerator when she had 3 teens in the house: Teenagers! Quick! Move out now, while you still know everything!
I started my kids at a young age (around 3ish), I'd tell them to get their backpack, then get xyz items, & finally put everything together (usually the night b4), when we walked out the door I'd say get your shoes & backpack so we can go. If they didn't do it, their problem... they learned really quick momma wasn't gonna gather their crap, carry it, & make sure they had it wherever we went. It was up to themselves, or they didn't have it. By the time they were in kindergarten, they were trained enough to not even need to be told anymore. We just told them what needed to go to school with them on a daily basis, & they we golden. The crazy thing is, if they forgot something, they never even called, they just dealt without it & adjusted on the fly, even though they knew I'd probably bring it if it was an emergency... Anyways, kids will either learn independence & self-reliance as they grow step-by-step, or they'll learn dependence & reliance the same way... it's up to their guardians to guide & mold them the way they want them to be in the end.
I’m so pleased to hear you shop Goodwill! My daughter works for Goodwill. They have amazing programs. Plus .60 of every dollar gets put back into the programs and into the pockets of Goodwill employees.
I look for other options since Goodwill money is so lopsided with the use of their income. Mostly admin and ceo and so little to employees and those who need it!! No coupons in my stores either😢
I will tell you it definitely gets better! Yes it does. My oldest got me a Mothers Day card about 6-7 years ago and it said everything. Very cute simple small card but on the inside it said Dear Mom, “You we’re right! “ And my daughter wrote About Everything! That was it for me! Just try to remember all the moments like that throughout their lives that let you know it is so worth all the tears, frustration and worry. At some point they will let you know they were listening all along. You got this even when you feel like you are losing the battle. ♥️♥️
I'm a total thrift junkie! 😆 I got spoiled by thrift store prices and options. Every time I go into a regular store looking for clothing or decorations, I look at the prices and selection and think "I'm not paying THAT much for THAT thing. I know I can find a better option at a better price at the thrift store?" 😊
So I recently discovered thriftbooks...it is SO addicting! If you are looking for a specific book you can search for it, find the condition you want and for waaaaay cheaper that book that you have been hunting for ends up on your front step 😍 It is such a lovely way to thrift for books!
I discovered it recently too! My daughter loves a Disney junior show that was canceled before she was even born so the books aren't in stores, but I've been able to find a lot of the books on there!

Your children are soooo lucky to have such a lovely Mum. It is hard, as they are finding their independence, in the only way they know how, but as long as you can have conversations with them, that is the most important thing. Tell them you love them too, as that is the most important thing to know - you can do no more, just let them know that you support them, and one day they will look back, as see how lucky they were. xxx
You absolutely can say “it” and still be supportive. We need to be tougher with our kids instead of sparring their feelings. Hopefully, their eyes will become open to the fact that you have wisdom and should be respected.
Great tips. I have been shopping in second hand stores for ages and some of the coolest things I own come from them. Regarding kids - instead of telling, try asking what do they think they need to do. This way you guide them in the right direction without nagging and because they actually had to think for themselves, the information sticks better ❤
I grew up shopping at thrift stores because it was the only place we could afford. Used to be so ashamed wearing someone else’s clothes. Back then it wasn’t “hip” My ex MIL shamed me hard for buying my kid’s clothes there but now I’m back at it and my kids enjoy finding treasures too! Bugger off lady 😂

Not that you need my approval or anyone else’s however-my son is 8 and I’m telling you what-he is all aboard the thrift train we recently found a pair of Converse and Nike shoes- 2 pairs of shoes for $10! He and I had a BLAST pretreating and threw them in the washer-they looked BRAND NEW!!!!! 😊
At this stage of parenting too, only I do have a 21 year old now, and I’m glad I kept saying all the mom things because it does get through, it’s just a delayed (several years) reaction. Also I feel like there is so much “mom” talk - real life talk and advice/wisdom, for the little kid stage, but not so much for teens. Plus as a parent, I am so busy driving the teens and working and dealing with teen drama that I don’t have the play dates where I had the chance to chat with someone in the same stage of life. There is no maternity leave for having a teen. I love my teens, but more supports would be great. Thanks for sharing Cas. It helps!
Having been raised poor - and an "eco bunny" - I don't go regular shopping, I go thrifting 😊 We live in the commuter belt outside London (UK), so I've scored Laura Ashley, Next, M&S and various other good quality brands/stores for 1/10 of the RRP... And I'm always getting complemented on pieces that I only paid £1-5 for!!🤭 Just the other day I found a Batman playset for my boy for £10, and these things are normally £50-100 new too. Like you, I can't recommend it enough 💗😊
I feel your struggle, Cass. I had a very tough time with my two teenage children. I wondered where the cute and sweet kids they had been, had disappeared. In their place were two angry, deaf, and obstinate creatures that made me feel like a failure. It wasn't until their 20s that they started 'coming out of the tunnel' of teen years. They reverted back to those sweet children that I recognized, but in adult form. Allow them to struggle, fall down, and get back up on their own. It shows respect for their abilities. You trust that they can figure things out for themselves. No kidding, it is very difficult not to jump in and rescue them; but they don't learn valuable life skills if you do it for them. I'll get off my soap box now and say how much I love thrifting and donating. I can change my clothes, my decor, my outdoor porch and patio on a budget. I've also learned how to refinish furniture and make clothing alterations. Talk about win, win. Love your channel! Hang in there my dear girl!!
I love this, I wish shopping in 2nd hand stores and thrift shops was more popular and accepted around the world. I'm from Finland and here buying and selling stuff at a 2nd hand store is pretty much part of the culture. Every city has either some thrift stores or self service 2nd hand stores (you book a table for few weeks and bring your stuff for sale for everyone to browse), many cities have both. I love walking in to a shop and have no idea what I might find that day. Most of the time I find nothing or maybe one or two things, but just the other day I stumbled across someone selling a bunch of decor items I could die for. I had to leave most there as I don't have the space for much extra right now and am trying to declutter, but I did get some lovely decorative pillows, wall hooks and new curtains to spice up my decor.
Parenting is incredibly challenging. I, too, wish people would talk about it more & be willing to share the difficult aspects. It's so helpful to hear that it's *normal* to feel frustrated, mad, disappointed, frantic or whatever, when you're caring for kids!
Sue Wolfe- You hit the nail on the head, Cass. Each phase of life you go through with your children has its challenges, but those are to prepare you for the next ones! Keep the faith, though. I think the hardest time for me for some children were the teenage years. Others, came as adults. You can give them the tools for good decisions, but it's their choice what they do with them. Just always love them! ❤❤
Each stage your children go through has challenges. Try to enjoy the little victories as they happen. The saying ‘days are long but years are short’ is so true. They are grown and gone so fast. You’ll look back at these years and wish for them again. 🥰
I go to thrift stores for antiques and oddities. Found a Harvey seatbelt bag for six bucks. I collect mid century and colored glass. Lamps I recommend learning an underwriters knot. I saved a solid brass Stiefel lamp with a cool lotus pattern. My guess from the 1960s. Got it rewired. Delicate design but totally cat proof. There is plenty to be had at thrift stores.
First of all, that romper is ridiculously cute!! Second, I see you’ve changed your picture twice since the last time I saw a video. Both were super cute! The goodwills around here in illinois/indiana don’t allow returns anymore. All sales are final. I’m not sure why, but before the pandemic it wasn’t like that.

Mum of two happy teens - I've found "coaching" is the best way - a lot of listening and asking opinion and engaging with them with respect rather than telling and advising (unless they ask for it). This is the time when they are wanting to become independent and they have to make mistakes and take a few risks. Unless they are actually going to come to harm (or harm others) let it go Cas. Be there to catch them when they need you to but time to loosen the apron strings - and we know you love an apron. Good luck and be kind and generous with yourself too. Thrifting is also recycling. We have a store in a few states in the west of America, that also teach those who are special needs. They become the employees. Most places won’t hire them because they are a little slower., it’s awesome, I love talking to them. They have the best spirits and are so kind. ❤
I thoroughly enjoy thrift shopping! I have several super success stories. 2 in particular involve formal dresses that I didn't want to spend a fortune on bc I needed them for one specific event and didn't know if I would ever wear them again. I have a friend who is an indie author and she invited me to go with her to a collective book signing event. The after party was a masquerade theme. I found a gorgeous antique gold and black dress that was old Hollywood glamor that was about 2 inches too small for me to zip and about 2 feet too long. My seamstress took out the zipper, cut off the length, and created a corset style closure with the extra material. What would have been a $500 dress wound up costing less that $100 and that includes the "remaking!" I also had the amazing opportunity to sing with a country wide community choir at Carnegie Hall, and the dress code was floor length black formal. I looked everywhere and couldn't find anything I liked or could afford or borrow. Went into our local consignment store and found the perfect long sleeve, floor length, simple, elegant black dress with just enough beading to make it "special" without being plain or gaudy. It fit like it had been custom made by a personal taylor. Cost me $10. I will never have to buy another formal dress again! As for your teens... I'm not a bio Mom, so take this for what it's worth. You're not stupid or crazy, and neither are they. However, speaking from my own experience as a kid with undiagnosed ADHD and one set of super strict parents and the other set having no concept of boundaries and me going back and forth between the two... guided options will be your best bet. Help them create a list of what they need to take to summer camp, then let them pack themselves. Discuss the consequences of doing or not doing the thing, and if nobody is going to be mortally wounded or it's not potentially illegal, let them choose and be gracious with the consequences. You're good, I promise, and if it was easy, it wouldn't be called "growing pains!"
Regarding Parenting, natural consequences are one of the very best teaching tools, but SO hard on us mama's!! If your kiddos don't listen to your advice, try not to bail them out. Ask them how they're going to solve their dilemma. So much easier said than done, but it's the best to give them tools for their future & not solve all of their self- created problems. Cass, parenting is a life long journey. All the childhood stages can feel like a challenge. The true challenge is when they are adults, 20's, 30's and yes the 40's. Watching the ups and downs of their journey, life is a journey, it not easy. The heartaches, as they are adults and make their own choices. You are not always heard. Yet you just offer love and support. It's a challenge, one I would never want to miss.

Cass, when we were young that's all my parents old afford. We were a family of 7 that's including my parents, at that time my das was the only one working so I would always got bullied by my "friends" for shopping at thrift stores. I was so traumatized growing up that I didn't want nothing to do with thrift stores, but slowly I started getting the confidence to shop there and now I really enjoy it, especially at Savers on Mondays when they have all color tags 50% discount. I LOVE hitting my local Thrift Stores. I love to get inexpensive vases when I want to give a friend a bouquet of flowers. This way they don't have to fuss to find one of their own when you arrive. I also love to donate. When I retired, I had so many good quality work clothes (blouses, pants, suits etc). It made me feel SO good to know that a person who purchased my loved outfits might wear one to land a new job. Need a large cooking dish for a one off party? .......thrift it and then donate it back if storage is a problem.

I get so excited when I find a new thrift store! The trouble is nearly everything in my home came from thrift stores. That's why I need to declutter so much stuff. When I donate things, I have a major struggle to not shop at that store. 😢😅
As a mom with a wide range of kids(21,17,6, and 2yrd old). Yes, I am a crazy mama 🤣 I would say toddlers and teens are my biggest struggle. I have been struggling with both groups lately. I am currently just taking it one day at a time. Some days I laugh and others I cry. Good luck Cass🙂
I work at Goodwill one day of the weekend. It's not my main job - but as side-hustles go, this one is great. I love the interaction with the customers. It's therapeutic (for the most part). I earn spare cash and I get a discount. Strict rules apply to when workers can shop - and customers get first dibs on everything...contrary to rumors I've heard...but I'm still able to get some amazing things at awesome prices. These tips are great, Cass - great content. But this info will vary by region. My region no longer carries furniture. My region has changing rooms - but we don't take returns. Ask a manager about that store's return policy when you're shopping so you can plan accordingly and you're not disappointed. Biggest tip I would give you... go often. Have a list on your phone or in a notebook and check in regularly to see what they have on hand. The product turnover at GW is high and very well-managed...so it changes a lot. You never know!! Have fun! And be nice to cashier...it could be me! :)
Cass, just have an open door policy with your kids, where they can ask you anything, and I mean EVERYTHING, we avoided so much stress and drama when we would just sit and talk hubby and I also kept the kids in the loop from a job loss, to death, they are smart and will respect you even more with an open door policy, and I wrote a list when they needed to pack item's and have them cross the list off that they packed their stuff. Thrifting is also fun but now I only buy stuff if it has a purpose😊

Hang in there Cass. Ahhh those teenage years… I remember a conversation (well not the exact subject of the conversation) with my daughter, my last sentence was “you’ll thank me when you’re older”. My goodness, what a surprise when maybe a year later she came to me and said that I was right. Proof that they do hear us, it just takes a while to sink in.
My teen girls and I LOVE thrifting. I really like your idea of adding an element of competition. Maybe a non-monetary prize to the winner, to not negate the savings (e.g., breakfast in bed, someone cleaning your room). I think we could get a few of their teen friends on board with this rainy day activity during summer break! :)

Same in California. A lot of items are marked higher than the original new price. Picture frames are a really good deal though, I don’t think I have any picture frames that didn’t come from the thrift store.
The nearest thrift sites to us, Goodwill or otherwise is about an hour and a half away from us so my husband I make it a date day .. we got several thrift stores during the day, go eat and a restaurant not normally available to us. Makes a great day!
Wow I wish we had prices like these in our second hand shops. Usually find things dearer at the second-hand shop than at the original shop they came from. I even learned some new ones (and I’ve been thrifting since I was a kid) 😊 It’s my favorite way to shop & I always find exactly what I need (or don’t) 😅 Now that I have a child, I’ve been scoring amazing finds & deals for her too. My trick…I write all my needs/wants/wishes in a notebook to bring it to life. I find motherhood to be really easy, but my goodness, toddlers are insane 😂 I have a ‘threenager’ 👸🏻
You make me laugh so much with your end sections. When I had my son, many years ago, I looked at him in his little perspex crib the day I had him and I thought - I am responsible for this little person for the rest of my life. And so it is! It never stops. Once your child goes to school, they are out in the world and you worry and worry. My mother used to say, 'when they are little, they break your arms, when they are big, they break your hearts'. A bit dramatic, but it is always hard being a mother. It is however worth it because of the joy and you can't have one without the other. That's the wisdom bit. I love all you do. Thank you.

My mom was a bit apprehensive about thrift shopping. When I offered this idea, she reluctantly agreed (mainly because she loves me so much and is willing to put up with all my batshit crazy ideas). Literally, five minutes in, she finds most adorable teapot/creamer and sugar bowl set ever. She absolutely refused leaving them on she shelf 😂. Let's just say, next day after work we went back again. And now she is the one dragging me to all the thrift stores in the area lol On a serious note, our house was kind of bare. At this point we have full kitchen, some bedroom and livingroom furniture and saved close to $1,000. So yeah, THRIFTING IS AWESOME!!! Try it guys and girls and you will be amazed at what you find!

Don't be discouraged if a nice lamp is missing a piece or two. When people are checking out with lamps that are missing a shade or the little knobby thing at the top of the shade (the finial) I refer them to go next door to the hardware store for both. Also, most stores will have a spare lightbulb in the drawer for the purpose of trying the lamp to make sure it works (or you can bring a bulb with you!)
i’ll tell you the same thing my grandmother and my mother told me and I’m sure you’ve heard it before. Pick your battles and sometimes you just have to let them fall. That second one is hard being a mom you don’t wanna see them hurt you don’t wanna see them upset but sometimes with the small things let them fall and hopefully they learn before it’s a big thing.
Our Goodwill prices are higher than that and coupons? I've never heard of that - and we donate regularly there! On the plus side, our Goodwills DO have open dressing rooms and a huge selection.
Growing up, our Mamaw worked at a Rescue Mission & she would give us bags & bags & bags of clothes. We would all sit in the living room & go through 10 bags of clothes picking our our favorites. It is such a fun memory. 😊
I’m going to share a comment that I heard Megyn Kelly say that her mom used to say to her no her sibling when they were young. “Lack of planning on your part does not justify an emergency on my part.” Her mom wouldn’t bail them out of a situation where they hadn’t listened and it only took a few times before they figured it out. I have bought in thrift stores for 35 years when I went through a tough part of my life,. I worked retail on the side of my full time jobs and learned all the great names. In fashion and home. I haven't had to buy second hand but I still shop second name because it is fun and saving the earth!!! I also keep a tall basket in our upstairs hallway for my family to donate.
Kids get better after 25 their brains turn on and they become people who you may want to hang out with. High school was rough and early twenties too I'll never say that was easy.
Again Cas you are amazing, I love you and your honesty. Growing up with 5 siblings my mom always thrifted. She found awesome one of a kind clothes and we always had cool stuff to wear. My sister would go to school and her classmates would ask where she got her outfits. She always would tell them I’m not sure my mom picked it up in the big town about 100 miles away. And she did. But she didn’t want to tell them it was thrifted. I always said if I didn’t shop second hand stores my kids would be naked. Thank you again!
The best thing I’ve found about decluttering is when I shop I’m very mindful of what I’m bringing home.

I got a 50-60 year old Hamilton Beach mixer (these things are practically indestructible) at a thrift store for $5. It's still going strong and I love it! I also had a lady see that I was looking at bread makers and she told me not to buy one that she had one in the car that she would give me. 😊
As the mom of a recent college grad - i dont ever think I’ll be saying teen years / early 20s are easy. It’s been a JOURNEY!!! Hang in there Cass there is light on the other side ☀️My biggest struggle was with “allowing” her to fall/fail and “talking her off a ledge” These years hold so much DRAMA - it’s exhausting. But I am happy to report, but hanging in there, and being the support of mom has strengthened our relationship, and I know she will come to me with anything. The struggle is REAL!

As a mother of two grown boys, I can honestly say the teen years were by far the most challenging! I will also say it is extremely rewarding. The payoff is when your grown kids come to you and say "Mom, you were right." or "Mom, thank you for being patient with me through those years and thank you for raising me with the knowledge, wisdom and structure that you provided. I am better for it." Seeing them thrive, reflect and pass down those lessons to their new babies.....THAT is when it all really comes to fruition. Hang in there Momma! You've got this!
I carry a little, retractable sewing tape measure with me when I go thrifting. That way I can measure a pair of pants that fit me perfectly from left seam to right at the waist and just measure any potential finds at the store. It really helps when things don't have size tags. I keep a list of basic measurements for my family in my phone and just double check as I shop.

They are only teenagers for a very short time then it evens out to be more of a friendship.. these few turbulent years are the ones where you lay that foundation of friendship. Don't worry so much about details and let them make the mistakes. Brush off bad attitudes and understand that they are producing hormones that overwhelm them. They will remember you for giving them space and safety at the same time. It will be over in a flash I promise 😇 good luck 🎉

My “baby” will be 33 in July and her teen years almost ended me (she is the youngest of 3) but now we are best friends, we talk/text every day and she’s an amazing woman! She thanks me as often as she’s moved to do so, that she wouldn’t be so amazing without having such an amazing mom 😍
I’m a lifelong thrifter! My mom started me on my journey as a little kid going to yard sales. I love it because your home never looks like a cookie cutter home because it’s put together one piece at a time as you find amazing things. I have passed the thrifting bug along to my children, especially my youngest! We love going out to yard sales, goodwills, thrift stores, peddlers malls and see who can find the best deals. I found an entire 12 piece setting of sterling silver silverware in a wooden box for $9.99…..I win! :) (it is worth well over $2,000!!) Its so fun spending the day with my kids and bringing home not only fun goodies, but memories that will last a lifetime.

Another tip is to take your measurements if you can't fit them at the thrift store. Don't forget to bring measuring tape so you can measure the clothes you plan on buying. Also, as someone from the Netherlands I am SO jealous of the size of your thrift stores! So many bags, oh my!

My sister was an avid thrifter and convinced me to accompany her. Well, I found a brand new jean jacket for my 5-year old almost identical to one her 8-year old sister had gotten for her birthday that cost $50. I was hooked! I’ve been thrifting since (except during the pandemic). They really need to reopen the dressing rooms though because you really can’t rely on sizing to know if most clothing will fit. You have to be willing to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your prince! 😂
When my kids were at home 35-40 years ago, I found a sign that said "Your Lack of Planning is NOT my Emergency". It saved my brain. If they didn't do the things I said would be helpful, I could always point to the sign. They of course kept having their own emergencies, but they became fewer and fewer. Also I'm going to go to the thrift store tomorrow!

I remember a sign on an acquaintance's refrigerator when she had 3 teens in the house: Teenagers! Quick! Move out now, while you still know everything!
I started my kids at a young age (around 3ish), I'd tell them to get their backpack, then get xyz items, & finally put everything together (usually the night b4), when we walked out the door I'd say get your shoes & backpack so we can go. If they didn't do it, their problem... they learned really quick momma wasn't gonna gather their crap, carry it, & make sure they had it wherever we went. It was up to themselves, or they didn't have it.
By the time they were in kindergarten, they were trained enough to not even need to be told anymore. We just told them what needed to go to school with them on a daily basis, & they we golden.
The crazy thing is, if they forgot something, they never even called, they just dealt without it & adjusted on the fly, even though they knew I'd probably bring it if it was an emergency...
Anyways, kids will either learn independence & self-reliance as they grow step-by-step, or they'll learn dependence & reliance the same way... it's up to their guardians to guide & mold them the way they want them to be in the end.

I’m so pleased to hear you shop Goodwill! My daughter works for Goodwill. They have amazing programs. Plus .60 of every dollar gets put back into the programs and into the pockets of Goodwill employees.
That means they are 40% admin. That's a very high percentage for a charity!

So I recently discovered thriftbooks...it is SO addicting! If you are looking for a specific book you can search for it, find the condition you want and for waaaaay cheaper that book that you have been hunting for ends up on your front step 😍 It is such a lovely way to thrift for books!
I discovered it recently too! My daughter loves a Disney junior show that was canceled before she was even born so the books aren't in stores, but I've been able to find a lot of the books on there!

It is hard, as they are finding their independence, in the only way they know how, but as long as you can have conversations with them, that is the most important thing. Tell them you love them too, as that is the most important thing to know - you can do no more, just let them know that you support them, and one day they will look back, as see how lucky they were. xxx
You absolutely can say “it” and still be supportive. We need to be tougher with our kids instead of sparring their feelings. Hopefully, their eyes will become open to the fact that you have wisdom and should be respected.
Great tips. I have been shopping in second hand stores for ages and some of the coolest things I own come from them. Regarding kids - instead of telling, try asking what do they think they need to do. This way you guide them in the right direction without nagging and because they actually had to think for themselves, the information sticks better ❤

At this stage of parenting too, only I do have a 21 year old now, and I’m glad I kept saying all the mom things because it does get through, it’s just a delayed (several years) reaction.
Also I feel like there is so much “mom” talk - real life talk and advice/wisdom, for the little kid stage, but not so much for teens. Plus as a parent, I am so busy driving the teens and working and dealing with teen drama that I don’t have the play dates where I had the chance to chat with someone in the same stage of life. There is no maternity leave for having a teen. I love my teens, but more supports would be great. Thanks for sharing Cas. It helps!
Having been raised poor - and an "eco bunny" - I don't go regular shopping, I go thrifting 😊 We live in the commuter belt outside London (UK), so I've scored Laura Ashley, Next, M&S and various other good quality brands/stores for 1/10 of the RRP... And I'm always getting complemented on pieces that I only paid £1-5 for!!🤭
Just the other day I found a Batman playset for my boy for £10, and these things are normally £50-100 new too.

I feel your struggle, Cass. I had a very tough time with my two teenage children. I wondered where the cute and sweet kids they had been, had disappeared. In their place were two angry, deaf, and obstinate creatures that made me feel like a failure. It wasn't until their 20s that they started 'coming out of the tunnel' of teen years. They reverted back to those sweet children that I recognized, but in adult form. Allow them to struggle, fall down, and get back up on their own. It shows respect for their abilities. You trust that they can figure things out for themselves. No kidding, it is very difficult not to jump in and rescue them; but they don't learn valuable life skills if you do it for them. I'll get off my soap box now and say how much I love thrifting and donating. I can change my clothes, my decor, my outdoor porch and patio on a budget. I've also learned how to refinish furniture and make clothing alterations. Talk about win, win. Love your channel! Hang in there my dear girl!!
I love this, I wish shopping in 2nd hand stores and thrift shops was more popular and accepted around the world. I'm from Finland and here buying and selling stuff at a 2nd hand store is pretty much part of the culture. Every city has either some thrift stores or self service 2nd hand stores (you book a table for few weeks and bring your stuff for sale for everyone to browse), many cities have both. I love walking in to a shop and have no idea what I might find that day. Most of the time I find nothing or maybe one or two things, but just the other day I stumbled across someone selling a bunch of decor items I could die for. I had to leave most there as I don't have the space for much extra right now and am trying to declutter, but I did get some lovely decorative pillows, wall hooks and new curtains to spice up my decor.
Parenting is incredibly challenging. I, too, wish people would talk about it more & be willing to share the difficult aspects. It's so helpful to hear that it's *normal* to feel frustrated, mad, disappointed, frantic or whatever, when you're caring for kids!
Sue Wolfe- You hit the nail on the head, Cass. Each phase of life you go through with your children has its challenges, but those are to prepare you for the next ones! Keep the faith, though. I think the hardest time for me for some children were the teenage years. Others, came as adults. You can give them the tools for good decisions, but it's their choice what they do with them. Each stage your children go through has challenges. Try to enjoy the little victories as they happen. The saying ‘days are long but years are short’ is so true. They are grown and gone so fast. You’ll look back at these years and wish for them again. 🥰

I go to thrift stores for antiques and oddities. Found a Harvey seatbelt bag for six bucks. I collect mid century and colored glass. Lamps I recommend learning an underwriters knot. I saved a solid brass Stiefel lamp with a cool lotus pattern. My guess from the 1960s. Got it rewired. Delicate design but totally cat proof. There is plenty to be had at thrift stores.
First of all, that romper is ridiculously cute!! Second, I see you’ve changed your picture twice since the last time I saw a video. Both were super cute! The goodwills around here in illinois/indiana don’t allow returns anymore. All sales are final. I’m not sure why, but before the pandemic it wasn’t like that.

Mum of two happy teens - I've found "coaching" is the best way - a lot of listening and asking opinion and engaging with them with respect rather than telling and advising (unless they ask for it). This is the time when they are wanting to become independent and they have to make mistakes and take a few risks. Unless they are actually going to come to harm (or harm others) let it go Cas. Be there to catch them when they need you to but time to loosen the apron strings - and we know you love an apron. Good luck and be kind and generous with yourself too. Thrifting is also recycling. We have a store in a few states in the west of America, that also teach those who are special needs. They become the employees. Most places won’t hire them because they are a little slower., it’s awesome, I love talking to them. They have the best spirits and are so kind. ❤
I thoroughly enjoy thrift shopping! I have several super success stories. 2 in particular involve formal dresses that I didn't want to spend a fortune on bc I needed them for one specific event and didn't know if I would ever wear them again. I have a friend who is an indie author and she invited me to go with her to a collective book signing event. The after party was a masquerade theme. I found a gorgeous antique gold and black dress that was old Hollywood glamor that was about 2 inches too small for me to zip and about 2 feet too long. My seamstress took out the zipper, cut off the length, and created a corset style closure with the extra material. What would have been a $500 dress wound up costing less that $100 and that includes the "remaking!" I also had the amazing opportunity to sing with a country wide community choir at Carnegie Hall, and the dress code was floor length black formal. I looked everywhere and couldn't find anything I liked or could afford or borrow. Went into our local consignment store and found the perfect long sleeve, floor length, simple, elegant black dress with just enough beading to make it "special" without being plain or gaudy. It fit like it had been custom made by a personal taylor. Cost me $10. I will never have to buy another formal dress again!
As for your teens... I'm not a bio Mom, so take this for what it's worth. You're not stupid or crazy, and neither are they. However, speaking from my own experience as a kid with undiagnosed ADHD and one set of super strict parents and the other set having no concept of boundaries and me going back and forth between the two... guided options will be your best bet. Help them create a list of what they need to take to summer camp, then let them pack themselves. Discuss the consequences of doing or not doing the thing, and if nobody is going to be mortally wounded or it's not potentially illegal, let them choose and be gracious with the consequences. You're good, I promise, and if it was easy, it wouldn't be called "growing pains!"

Regarding Parenting, natural consequences are one of the very best teaching tools, but SO hard on us mama's!! If your kiddos don't listen to your advice, try not to bail them out. Cass, parenting is a life long journey. All the childhood stages can feel like a challenge. The true challenge is when they are adults, 20's, 30's and yes the 40's. Watching the ups and downs of their journey, life is a journey, it not easy. The heartaches, as they are adults and make their own choices. You are not always heard. Yet you just offer love and support.
It's a challenge, one I would never want to miss.

Cass, when we were young that's all my parents old afford. We were a family of 7 that's including my parents, at that time my das was the only one working so I would always got bullied by my "friends" for shopping at thrift stores. I was so traumatized growing up that I didn't want nothing to do with thrift stores, but slowly I started getting the confidence to shop there and now I really enjoy it, especially at Savers on Mondays when they have all color tags 50% discount. I LOVE hitting my local Thrift Stores. I love to get inexpensive vases when I want to give a friend a bouquet of flowers. This way they don't have to fuss to find one of their own when you arrive. I also love to donate. When I retired, I had so many good quality work clothes (blouses, pants, suits etc). It made me feel SO good to know that a person who purchased my loved outfits might wear one to land a new job. Need a large cooking dish for a one off party? .......thrift it and then donate it back if storage is a problem.

I love thrifting! I found a velvet jacket from J. Jill at Goodwill for about $5 once. Crazy!
I work at Goodwill one day of the weekend. It's not my main job - but as side-hustles go, this one is great. I love the interaction with the customers. It's therapeutic (for the most part). I earn spare cash and I get a discount. Strict rules apply to when workers can shop - and customers get first dibs on everything...contrary to rumors I've heard...but I'm still able to get some amazing things at awesome prices.
These tips are great, Cass - great content. But this info will vary by region. My region no longer carries furniture. My region has changing rooms - but we don't take returns. Ask a manager about that store's return policy when you're shopping so you can plan accordingly and you're not disappointed.
Biggest tip I would give you... go often. Have a list on your phone or in a notebook and check in regularly to see what they have on hand. The product turnover at GW is high and very well-managed...so it changes a lot. You never know!! Have fun! And be nice to cashier...it could be me! :)
Cass, just have an open door policy with your kids, where they can ask you anything, and I mean EVERYTHING, we avoided so much stress and drama when we would just sit and talk hubby and I also kept the kids in the loop from a job loss, to death, they are smart and will respect you even more with an open door policy, and I wrote a list when they needed to pack item's and have them cross the list off that they packed their stuff. Thrifting is also fun but now I only buy stuff if it has a purpose😊

Hang in there Cass. Ahhh those teenage years… I remember a conversation (well not the exact subject of the conversation) with my daughter, my last sentence was “you’ll thank me when you’re older”. My goodness, what a surprise when maybe a year later she came to me and said that I was right. Proof that they do hear us, it just takes a while to sink in.
My teen girls and I LOVE thrifting. I really like your idea of adding an element of competition. Maybe a non-monetary prize to the winner, to not negate the savings (e.g., breakfast in bed, someone cleaning your room). I think we could get a few of their teen friends on board with this rainy day activity during summer break! :)
Pick of favorite dinner/treat, cooking lesson for favorite food, dessert or dish, pick of special movie night, boys'/girls' night, or outing, chore free day... ohhhh the possibilities are endless!!

The nearest thrift sites to us, Goodwill or otherwise is about an hour and a half away from us so my husband I make it a date day .. we got several thrift stores during the day, go eat and a restaurant not normally available to us. Makes a great day!

When I had my son, many years ago, I looked at him in his little perspex crib the day I had him and I thought - I am responsible for this little person for the rest of my life. And so it is! It never stops. Once your child goes to school, they are out in the world and you worry and worry. My mother used to say, 'when they are little, they break your arms, when they are big, they break your hearts'. A bit dramatic, but it is always hard being a mother. I can almost assure you they will not do that again, letting them suffer their own consequences is how you teach them. Thrifting is the best!!!! I went today lol! I live in Portland, Oregon, and we are such an eco friendly city, we have the best goodwills! So fun, I’ve been shopping for over 20 years, I’ve found the BEST things, and continue to!
My mom was a bit apprehensive about thrift shopping. When I offered this idea, she reluctantly agreed (mainly because she loves me so much and is willing to put up with all my batshit crazy ideas). Literally, five minutes in, she finds most adorable teapot/creamer and sugar bowl set ever. She absolutely refused leaving them on she shelf 😂. Let's just say, next day after work we went back again. And now she is the one dragging me to all the thrift stores in the area lol
On a serious note, our house was kind of bare. At this point we have full kitchen, some bedroom and livingroom furniture and saved close to $1,000. So yeah, THRIFTING IS AWESOME!!! Try it guys and girls and you will be amazed at what you find!

Don't be discouraged if a nice lamp is missing a piece or two. When people are checking out with lamps that are missing a shade or the little knobby thing at the top of the shade (the finial) I refer them to go next door to the hardware store for both. Also, most stores will have a spare lightbulb in the drawer for the purpose of trying the lamp to make sure it works (or you can bring a bulb with you!)
i’ll tell you the same thing my grandmother and my mother told me and I’m sure you’ve heard it before. Pick your battles and sometimes you just have to let them fall. That second one is hard being a mom you don’t wanna see them hurt you don’t wanna see them upset but sometimes with the small things let them fall and hopefully they learn before it’s a big thing.
Our Goodwill prices are higher than that and coupons? I've never heard of that - and we donate regularly there! On the plus side, our Goodwills DO have open dressing rooms and a huge selection.
Growing up, our Mamaw worked at a Rescue Mission & she would give us bags & bags & bags of clothes. We would all sit in the living room & go through 10 bags of clothes picking our our favorites. It is such a fun memory. 😊

I’m going to share a comment that I heard Megyn Kelly say that her mom used to say to her no her sibling when they were young. “Lack of planning on your part does not justify an emergency on my part.” Her mom wouldn’t bail them out of a situation where they hadn’t listened and it only took a few times before they figured it out. I have bought in thrift stores for 35 years when I went through a tough part of my life,. I worked retail on the side of my full time jobs and learned all the great names. In fashion and home. I haven't had to buy second hand but I still shop second name because it is fun and saving the earth!!! I also keep a tall basket in our upstairs hallway for my family to donate.
Kids get better after 25 their brains turn on and they become people who you may want to hang out with. High school was rough and early twenties too I'll never say that was easy.

Growing up with 5 siblings my mom always thrifted. She found awesome one of a kind clothes and we always had cool stuff to wear. My sister would go to school and her classmates would ask where she got her outfits. She always would tell them I’m not sure my mom picked it up in the big town about 100 miles away. And she did. But she didn’t want to tell them it was thrifted.
I always said if I didn’t shop second hand stores my kids would be naked.
